Make problem solving fun with this award winning, research-based curriculum unit!Designed to meet the needs of gifted students in grades 6 and up, this book will enable you to expertly guide your students through using the engineering design process, SCAMPER, and a new tool called “My Maker’s Map” to innovate solutions to both hypothetical and personal situations in their own lives. By the end of the unit, students will have created a working prototype of their design, presented it to a group of judges in a Shark Tank-esque Junior competition, filed a mock patent application, and conceptualized a marketing campaign. In addition, students will participate in various problem-based learning tasks and organize a Maker Fair for their school.Standards aligned and full of tips, handouts, and resources, this ready to use curriculum model requires no additional research or prep work and is a must-have for teachers interested in providing an engaging, differentiated, and hands-on engineering design experience for their students.

Most environmental statutes passed since 1970 have endorsed a pragmatic or 'precautionary' principle under which the existence of a significant risk is enough to trigger regulation. At the same time, targets of such regulation have often argued on grounds of inefficiency that the associated costs outweigh any potential benefits. In this work, Jason Johnston unpacks and critiques the legal, economic, and scientific basis for precautionary climate policies pursued in the United States and in doing so sheds light on why the global warming policy debate has become increasingly bitter and disconnected from both climate science and economics. Johnston analyzes the most influential international climate science assessment organizations, the US electric power industry, and land management and renewable energy policies. Bridging sound economics and climate science, this pathbreaking book shows how the United States can efficiently adapt to a changing climate while radically reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Determining Pilot Manning for Bomber Longevity

Determining Pilot Manning for Bomber Longevity

In support of US Air Force efforts to conserve resources without sacrificing capability, this research examines the question of whether the 509th Bomb Wing could continue to provide maximum combat capability with fewer assigned pilots. During peacetime, pilot proficiency training comprises the majority of annual flying hours for the small B-2 bomber fleet. Optimal pilot manning will decrease the accumulation of excess wear on the airframes; helping to extend the viable life of the B-2 fleet and preserve the deterrent and combat capabilities that it provides to the United States. The operations and maintenance activity flows for B-2 aircraft and pilots in a notional sustained combat scenario are constructed in an Arena discrete-event simulation model. The model provides the capability to determine optimum manning levels for combat-qualified B-2 pilots across a range of fleet mission capable rates. Determination of actual optimum manning levels is sensitive to duration and probability parameters which are unavailable for use in this work. Notional parameter estimates are used to assess combat mission capability and pilot manning. This collection of contemporary romantic poetry explores the many joys and agonies of the miracle of love. It was written for lovers of all persuasions and for those who know enough to treasure love, no matter with whom it is shared-man with woman, man with man, or woman with woman. Author Jason S. Nino explores love as a human emotion, with all of its turmoil, longing, false hope, disappointment, and exuberance, from the perspective of a young man's expressive heart. When it comes to love, there is no holding back. All feelings are communicated with wondrous expression. The power of this book is in its ability to move the reader's emotions through its imagery, words, and art. Since he was old enough to put pen to paper, Jason knew he wanted to write poetry. As early as the first grade, Jason won a county competition for creative story writing. He began writing poetry as a child and grew accustomed to putting his thoughts and emotions into his poems. He is a sensitive, imaginative, and emotional poet. He reaches into the depths of his heart, explores deeply, and utters every possible feeling that one can experience under the spell of love.

The novels of Jane Smiley, Jonathan Franzen, and Don DeLillo propose new readings of justice in contemporary American literature. Jason S. Polley argues that such distinctive writers as Smiley, Franzen, and DeLillo reconfigure what he calls «acts of justice» in various modalities and spaces. These authors re-conceptualize justice in their portrayals of peripheral groups, such as women, minorities, and outcasts. In lieu of fictionalizing justice in conventional courtrooms, these writers’ narratives make a virtue of representing the undetermined and everyday presence of justice. As a result, Smiley, Franzen, and DeLillo succeed in demonstrating the ordinariness of personal concerns with justice. Loosely tracing a legacy of justice in American literature, this book also compares contemporary American narratives to canonized earlier American novels, such as Melville’s Moby Dick, James’s The Bostonians, and Norris’s McTeague. The book likewise examines contemporary writers like Joyce Carol Oates and Toni Morrison. Polley concludes by observing that justice in contemporary American life is not about closure, but is an open-ended practice of human action, a theory that corresponds to postmodern theories of narrative.

One of the brightest Canadian scientists of his generation, Omond McKillop Solandt was a physiologist by training, an engineer by disposition, and a manager by necessity. A protégé of insulin’s co-discoverer, Charles Best, Solandt worked as a scientist for the British government during the Second World War, including as a pioneer of operational research and a manager of scientific establishments. Ending the war as a colonel, he served on the British Mission to Japan, where he studied the effects of the atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, before returning to Canada to become chairman of the newly created Defence Research Board. There he spearheaded Canada’s attempt to create a new and innovative government science infrastructure that served the needs of the Canadian military at the dawn of the nuclear age and worked alongside allies in Britain and the United States. In Maestro of Science, Jason S. Ridler draws on interviews with Solandt and his colleagues and declassified records from Canada and the United Kingdom to paint a vivid picture of the influence and achievements of a Canadian leader in Cold War military research.

After the prince's parents call on the Good Fairy of the Light for help, she turns him into a magical toy in order to save him. No one sees any reason to tell the prince he is actually a toy and not a real boy-until the Dark Spirit realizes what has happened. In this charming story, the children of a kingdom learn a valuable lesson in how to treat their toys-and each other-after a fairy works her magic on a prince.
