Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous

Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous

George Berkeley's philosophy of immaterialism is still influential three hundred years after the publication of his most widely read book, "Three Dialogues Between Hylas and Philonous". Berkeley published the "Dialogues" because of the unenthusiastic reception of his "Principles of Human Knowledge" in 1710. He hoped the use of the dialogue format would win a more favorable hearing, but unfortunately for Berkeley, the response was every bit as scathing as the reception of his previous work. In recent decades, however, Berkeley's work has been recognized as an excellent introduction to the English philosophy of the eighteenth century, and to philosophy in general. This edition of the dialogues is accessibly organized by David Hilbert and John Perry.

A collaboration between three distinguished professors of linguistics and philosophy. The result of the collaboration between three distinguished philosophers, this book comprises the best sample of one of the most original theories in contemporary philosophy of language and communication—Critical Pragmatics. They present the development of the theory from its initial sprout, with “Three Demonstrations and a Funeral” (2006) as its first visible result, to a critical clarification of its tenets in “Critical Pragmatics: Nine Misconceptions” (2023). After Korta and Perry’s Critical Pragmatics (2011), this is the most important book on Critical Pragmatics, as it was conceived, developed and applied by its creators. Having de Ponte, Korta and Perry’s most important papers together on one place will be of great value to both philosophers and linguists.

Maryam Rostampour ja Marziyeh Amirizadeh syntyivät muslimiperheisiin Iranissa. He kääntyivät kristinuskoon ja kohtasivat vuonna 2005 opiskellessaan teologiaa Turkissa. Tietoisena valintansa hinnasta he palasivat Iraniin evankelioidakseen kansaansa. He jakoivat Uusia testamentteja, muodostivat verkostoja ja perustivat kaksi maanalaista kotiseurakuntaa, yhden opiskelijoille, toisen miestensä hylkäämille, prostituoiduiksi pakotetuille naisille. 259 vuorokautta he elivät maailman hirvittävimmässä vankilassa. Kristinuskon kieltäminen aihoana Herrana ja Jumalana ja paluu islaminuskoon olisi tuonut välittömän vapautumisen. Naiset kieltäytyivät. He todistivat ja voittivat sieluja. Jumala lähetti herätyksen. Vankilasta tuli heidän kirkkonsa. Kansainvälisen painostuksen mutta ennen kaikkea Jumalan suoranaisen ihmeen johdosta heidät vapautettiin, syytteistä luovuttiin ja he saivat poistua maasta. Uskon tähden vainottuina he saivat turvapaikan Yhdysvalloista, josta käsin he koordinoivat avustusohjelmia Iranissa ja muualla kärsivien kristittyjen tueksi. Billy Grahamin järjestö on yksi Maryamin ja Marziyehin työn suosittelijoista.

When Lee Kuan Yew died recently, the world media turned its attention to the nation he led for decades: Singapore. Lee Kuan Yew's revolutionary transformation of Singapore from a poor and corrupt colonial backwater into an economic powerhouse renowned for its wealth, order, and rectitude is one of the great--and most surprising--stories of modern era. In Singapore: Unlikely Power, John Perry provides an evenhanded and authoritative history of the island nation that ranges from its Malay origins to the present day. Blessed with a natural deepwater port that is shielded by mountain ranges from oceanic storms and which sits along one of the most strategic straits in the world, Singapore has served as a major shipping entrepot throughout modern history. The first great naval power to exploit the island's strategic location was China, and during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries thousands of Chinese emigrated to Singapore. The most famous colonizer, though, was Britain, which ruled Singapore until the 1960s except for when the Japanese occupied it during World War Two. From the early nineteenth century onward, Singapore was a vital node in the global economy, which relied on oceanic shipping and the protection of the British Navy. Perry covers all of this before turning to the era of independence, which began in the 1960s. Plagued with the usual assortment of ills that former colonies in the tropics suffered from--corruption, inequality, lack of an educated population--Singapore improbably vaulted from essentially third-world status into a first world dynamo over the course of three decades. In the process, longtime leader Lee Kuan Yew did many things that other post-colonial leaders shunned. He embraced the colonial past, established close ties with its World War Two tormentor (Japan), and adopted a resolutely pragmatist approach to economic development rather than following any one fashionable ideological program. Today, it is one of the wealthiest and best educated countries in the world, and it is a model regime for states looking to develop rapidly but which are relatively unconcerned with freedom or democracy (although Singapore itself is a democracy). In sum, this is an accessible, comprehensive, and indeed colorful overview of a city-state that has perfected one of the most influential political-economic models in the world.

From the early years of the republic, many Americans anticipated a Pacific Age in world affairs that the United States would inevitably dominate, not in a territorial sense so much as in a cultural and commercial one. Despite the reality that Asia was of little real economic importance in American life until recently, a powerful image persisted in the American mind of the promises of riches to be found across the Pacific. This book provides the history of that dream, from the time of Spanish galleons to the hypersonic airplane of the future. With bewildering speed, the North Pacific region has come to rival the North Atlantic as a global center of manufacturing, trade and information, and the generation of wealth. The economic statistics show that the Age of the Pacific has truly arrived. Perry vividly shows that from the early years of the republic many Americans anticipated a Pacific Age in world affairs that the United States would inevitably dominate, not in a territorial sense so much as in a cultural and commercial one. Despite the reality that Asia was of little real economic importance in American life until recently, a powerful image persisted in the American mind of the promise of riches to be found across the Pacific. This book provides the history of that dream, from the time of Spanish galleons to the hypersonic airplane of the future. Countless books have been written about American-East Asian relations, but fewer books have addressed the importance of the Pacific Ocean to the United States. No one before has shown so comprehensively how Americans dominated the creation of trans-Pacific trade routes. This book will be of great interest to professional historians and the general public interested in the history of American-Pacific relations, the history of transportation, and the history of the entrepreneurial doers and dreamers who spearheaded American commerce with Asia.

Trials of the Visionary Mind

Trials of the Visionary Mind

John Weir Perry

A comprehensive summary of the author's revolutionary approach to psychosis.Stress may cause highly activated mythic images to erupt from the psyche's deepest levels in the form of turbulent visionary experience. Depending on whether the interactions between the individual and the immediate surroundings lean toward affirmation or invalidation, comprehension of these visions can turn the visionary experience into a step in growth or into a disorder, as an acute psychosis. Based on his clinical and scholarly investigations, John Weir Perry has found and formulated a mental syndrome which, though customarily regarded as acute psychosis, is in actuality a more natural effort of the psyche to mend its imbalances. If the upset is received in the spirit of empathy and understanding, and allowed to run its course, an acute episode can be found to reveal a self-organizing process that has self-healing potential. This book examines what the acute "psychotic" experience stirs up in the psyche and how to empathetically respond. Understanding the function of mythic themes is reached through the author's investigation into myth and ritual of antiquity and also the visionary experience undergone by prophets and social reformers in various ages and parts of the world.

Our Experiences With ANGELS

Our Experiences With ANGELS

There are 93 scriptures in the King James Version of the Bible about angels. That's quite a few and I am going to read and study each one until I understand more about them because I know God uses the angels because of my own experiences and the experiences of others which were told before me. I know there are angels because often I can feel the flutter of their wings in a large room or their presence close by. Now I would never try to confuse the presence of God with the presence of angels. There is a big difference. And I would never want to attribute one or the other but be still and know. I suppose now that God has suggested I write this book, I will experience much more angelic activity. That is as it is supposed to be. For me angels are supernatural beings used by the purpose of God in so many instances. If they were natural beings you could see them more readily. Some can see them all the time, I can not. I am a seer but God does not always allow me to see everything. I asked the Lord one time if He would allow me to see angels early on and He gave me a big, definitive, "NO " Just focus on me was all He said and I accepted that knowing God knows what is best. But at the time, many years ago I could have been upset and mislead, my experience was young. My focus stays on Jesus even as I write this book with the topic of angels; I must stay in this realm of surrender to Him who knows all and sees all even before it happens. I love the supernatural realm and always have been seeking even as a young girl before I knew my Savior and I got off into some pretty weird stuff but since I met Jesus in 1998 my life has turned around and I know much better now. When God says no He means no and when God says go He means go and I go. So this book is a real big surprise for me and the assignment of angels to write about. It's been real for my husband and myself as we will relay to you as we go. My husband John has seen much more of the angelic realm than I have so I will be quoting him as we go along here just to verify what he has seen. So I pray we will do God honor and justice here in this book as we take a look at angels and how they interact and are involved in our day to day lives. I know God is in control and I cannot do this without Him and all glory to His holy name. What is it the angels cry in Heaven? They cry, "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty "
