It's not what I lost. It's what I've found. I was only seventeen, just a girl, when God asked me for everything I had . . . my health, my hopes, my independence, my dreams, my freedom, and my mobility. He took it all.I was so angry with Him that I tried to push Him away. God relentlessly held me more closely. Looking back, forty years later, I understand that God has changed and healed me--my heart and my mind--in the most unexpected ways, giving me rubies of His wisdom about an unbending faith and an experience of His mercy I can now tell you about. Was it a fair exchange, my freedom and no wheelchair for the rubies of wisdom I've been given? Absolutely. In this I have learned at the feet of the Lord Jesus, embracing the way that God heals us, even when we rage at Him in anger, fear, and despair. This book is not about what I lost in that diving accident so long ago. It's about the wisdom He's given me to live life victoriously in the face of disappointments and challenges that we all face.

More and more people who are terminally ill are choosing assisted suicide. When is it Right to Die? offers a different path with alternatives of hope, compassion, and death with real dignity.Joni Eareckson Tada knows what it means to wrestle with this issue and to wish for a painless solution. For the last 50 years she has been confined to a wheelchair and struggled against her own paralysis. And she sat by the bedside of her dying father, thinking, So much suffering, why not end it all quickly, painlessly? The terminally ill, the elderly, the disabled, the depressed and suicidal, can all be swept up into this movement of self-deliverance. Skip the suffering. Put a quick end to merciless pain and mental anguish. These are tempting enticements to the hurting. Joni doesn't give pat answers. Instead, she gives warm comfort from God and practical help to meet the realities for those facing death. When Is It Right to Die? tells the stories of families who have wrestled with end-of-life questions and found that death with dignity does not necessarily mean three grams of Phenobarbital in the veins. Behind every right-to-die situation is a family. A family like yours. In her warm, personal way, Joni takes the reader into the lives of families and lets them speak about assisted suicide. What they say is surprising.Whether you have a dying family member, facing moral and medical choices, or struggling with a chronic condition that feels overwhelming, this book will help you find practical encouragement and biblical advice to help you make difficult decisions. This book is revised and updated to examine the current events, trending issues, and the rising acceptance of assisted suicide in this country.

Statistics show that only 5 percent of churches have an outreach to disabled persons and that 95 percent of the people who have disabilities are not active in any church. Why not? In many cases, churches are newly coming to awareness of the need for disability ministry but have no idea how to start or what's involved. All God's Children is a handbook for pastors, elders, ministry leaders, and laypeople who want to minister to people with disabilities. It is a book to equip churches for ministry to those who are mentally retarded, learning disabled, hearing impaired, visually impaired, or otherwise physically disabled. This edition is extensively revised, especially the chapters on hearing-impaired persons and on getting a disability ministry started. The resource lists have been expanded and brought up to date.

This insightful biography of George Clooney looks at his work on-screen, his off-screen activities as a political activist, and the many things that make him stand out from the Hollywood crowd. George Clooney: A Biography will help students understand that having achieved the clout accorded a Hollywood star, one can use it to fight injustice and create a better world. The biography covers Clooney's life from childhood through adulthood. It looks at the influence of his famous aunt, Rosemary Clooney, and his television-broadcaster father. It reveals his dream of becoming a professional baseball player and his failed tryout with the Cincinnati Reds in 1977. To create her portrait, author Joni Hirsch Blackman called on sources as diverse as childhood friends, coworkers, and a UN official who traveled with Clooney on his missions as a UN Messenger of Peace. What comes across is a picture of a warm, caring, witty, and intelligent man whose priorities are his craft, his friends and family, and the world around him.

The air is crisp and holds that early evening glow that only lasts for a moment before it all rapidly grows dark. Each blade of grass motions towards me as the wind runs across its surface. It's unusually green for this time of fall, but winter is lying in wait. I step off the porch and my bare toes hug the grass until I'm shivering. Across the lawn is my father's tractor. Hay is piled in the back. It's waiting to be revved up and taken down the road to the old barn, but I doubt it would still run. We used it at our wedding; we strung cans off the back of the flatbed and sat on the hay waving as my dad drove us off to our new home. The tractor hasn't moved since then.I climb up in its perch and look down the gravel drive. If I went far enough I would hit the highway. Maybe the local news would pick up my story: Crazy lady runs away riding ancient tractor: a story of dissatisfaction and the longest mile that tractor will ever see.

First published in 1993. The question of ‘agency’ is essential to our understanding of environmental problems - who is responsible, and why? Threats such as ozone depletion, global warming and overconsumption are all precipitated by the powerful institutions which shape modern life – institutions which are overwhelmingly controlled by men and dominated by masculine presumptions. Joni Seager argues that the gender bias inherent in western culture is inextricably linked to our environmental crisis. She analyses the traditional institutes of power – governments, the military and transnational corporations - and also takes a critical look at the equally patriarchal environmental establishment, comparing the work of the official environmental movement, grounded in masculine thought, with the smaller-scale, direct actions taken by women driven to protect their homes and communities. Earth Follies represents an incisive and utterly convincing feminist critique of our environmental crises, and offers radical and productive priorities for the environmental agenda.

Parrots own cafés and lemurs run the espresso machines. Badgers tend bar, raccoons write for The Post, and a racehorse is mayor. There are dogs on Wall Street and cats on Broadway. Sea creatures are viewed with fear and disgust. Maybe a big wall should be built to keep them out. It's New York City, now-ish. No big deal. Alfonzo is an alpaca. His hip friend Mitchell is a llama. They both work at City Hall and are trying to navigate the great furry city collapsing around them. Partly to meet girls, and partly out of a sense that the world might be ending, these lowly city employees embark on an unlikely mission to take down the corrupt system selling the city out from beneath its real inhabitants. Their journey soon leads them to the Sea Front, a clandestine group that could as easily be a hive of dangerous radicals as an inspirational liberation movement. This world without humans teems with creatures stuck in frustrating jobs and surrounded by crumbling infrastructure and worsening environmental catastrophes. Joni Murphy's Talking Animals is Animal Farm by way of Annie Hall by way of The Sixth Extinction. At once delicate and urgent, it is a contemporary allegory about community and capitalism, art and protest, the physical and emotional devastation of global warming, and the elemental struggle to change one's life.
