"Phoenix Rising provides readers with two great services. First, it offers a truly unique perspective on Operation EAGLE CLAW. Additionally, it presents an excellent history of the evolution of USSOCOM. The combination of this subject matter and the outstanding readability of the volume make this one of those rare one-sit reads." — On Point: The Journal of Army History_x000D_ _x000D_ “As a junior officer and the lowest ranking 'gopher' at the creation of these forces, I saw how the several Services had great reservations regarding SOF to the point of studied dislike of it and a distinct distaste for its inclusion as a member of their force structure. The single lone exception was Army Chief of Staff Shy Myer, who saw terrorism and asymmetrical warfare as the emerging National threat and worked to build a missing capability. He did this as a lone wolf in that much of the Army leadership as well as the other Services, looked upon SOF as a high-risk loose cannon on their stable conventional deck.” Phoenix Rising recounts the paradoxical birth of SOF through the prism of Operation Eagle Claw, the failed attempt to rescue fifty-two Americans held hostage in the U.S. Embassy in Tehran. When terrorists captured the Embassy on November 4, 1979, the Joint Chiefs of Staff quickly realized that the United States lacked the military capability to launch a rescue. There was no precedent for the mission, a mission that came with extraordinary restrictions and required a unique force to take it on. With no existent command structure or budget, this force would have to be built from scratch in utmost secrecy, and draw on every branch of the U.S. military. Keith Nightingale, then a major, was Deputy Operations Officer and the junior member of Joint Task Force Eagle Claw, commanded by Major General James Vaught. Based on Nightingale’s detailed diary, Phoenix Rising vividly describes the personalities involved, the issues they faced, and the actions they took, from the conception of the operation to its hair-raising launch and execution. His historically significant post-analysis of Eagle Claw gives unparalleled insight into how a very dedicated group of people from the Chief of Staff of the Army to lower-ranking personnel subjugated personal ambition to grow the forces necessary to address the emerging terrorist threat—a threat which the majority of uniformed leadership and their political masters denied in 1979. The Special Operations capability of the United States today is the ultimate proof of their success.

With a coat as soft as clouds and a hop that could rival a kangaroo's, Roo bounded through life with infectious joy. But not everyone appreciated his unique style. The other dogs often teased him, calling him "not so nice names" leaving Roo feeling like an outsider in his own world. One sunny afternoon, Roo stumbled upon a rescue mission in a park. Binary Configuration for the Pick 3 Lottery Part I

Binary Configuration for the Pick 3 Lottery Part I

I am writing this book for a great many reasons, of which, one of the main reasons, was to try and find a way to understand the Flow of the numbers for the Lottery System, through the randomness of specific numbers drawn on any given day. In my quest for seeking such, I have found a way to do just that. I've placed the randomness of the selection process into a Binary Format of 0's and 1's that allow me to select, from a group of Binary Subsets, consistently selected winning numbers. Binary Code is incapable of falsehood, therefore, Binary is "Truth." Varied Sequences of 0's and 1's representing "On" and "Off" signals can only be relatable to truth. The Binary System that I have related to the Pick 3 Lottery Number System is a worldwide "numbers system" that works on all continents with a Pick 3 Lottery gaming system. Not only should it be recognized as a Global Numbers System, but with the consolidation from Binary Configuration, my system literally makes it a Universal Numbers System that is based on truth. Take the "guess-work" out of the selection process. Instead, use a strategic and logical system of Binary deduction that works. The methods offered in my book, does exactly that. Playing the number patterns that I provide, will increase your overall win percentages, dramatically. The Numbers System for the Pick 3 Lottery is incredibly fascinating. Trying to create an accomplished system to use for consistently selecting one set of a three digit combination out of sets of numbers from 000 to 999 is very, very difficult. The numbers system is far more complex and dauntingly more difficult to master. In the research that I have undertaken, I have broken down the complexity using a Binary Format to code every possibly three digit number outcome that can hit the drawn numbers on any given daily selection. My system is accurate worldwide because it is used to determine detection's within the numbers system ranging from 000 to 999. The 590 pages of this book is pretty much laid out as follows: Reciprocal Number Mapping > P3 SUBSETS DEFINED > Low and High Determination of the Reciprocal Mapping and Binary Consolidation > Binary Consolidation > New Interpretation for Break Even Points (Critically Paramount for understanding play and win percentages) > The Collective_Boxed 6 Ways_Low and High Determinant's > Back Testing the System > Attributes applied to the Back Testing process > LRC and LR_Numbers to select and play in the Pick 3 Lottery Selection Methodology. Reciprocal Number Mapping to the Binary Consolidation Phase for the entire 00 to 09 Numbers System also determine the "Low and High" aspect of the number system. I have come to a logical conclusion that cannot be disputed. That fact is, "there are, and always will be, only 4 ending conclusions that determine the drawn numbers for the Pick 3 Lottery." Those 4 outcomes are (where L=Low and H=High) LLL, LHH, LLH and HHH. That will be explained, along with all of the possible outcome of those number selections possible, as determined with LLL, LHH, LLH and HHH, in this book. Still yet, to be made mention of here, is also how I use a simple ABCDE Lettering format to categorize and group all individual three digit number sets from 000 to 009. Through Binary Configuration, I have arranged all number Subsets into 25 Initial Pre-Selection Binary Consolidated Sets. An example of one of the twenty-five Binary coded Sets is 0100001000. The post Consolidation phase consists of finalized Subsets that are grouped into each of the 25 Initial Pre-Binary Sets." The "Attributes" section of the book details the association of the letter format of A-B-C-D and T, with the Low and High conclusion over the course of the back tested 2017 and 2018 years of evaluation. The number system is fascinating and should be admired. A strategic and logical pattern selection methodology must be utilized when determining what numbers to use when playing the Pick 3 Lot

This book pays overdue attention to the British writer Ramsey Campbell, a key figure in the post-1970s boom in Anglo-American horror fiction. Despite a huge output and receiving every accolade within his field over a long career, Campbell has not yet been accorded anything like the wider critical recognition given to his contemporary Stephen King. This study concentrates also on Campbell’s neglected novels and novellas, rather than the short stories for which he has been better known. The book Ramsey Campbell establishes the author’s unique prose style, denoted by a haunted self-consciousness about the act of writing and role of readership, and his distinctive mediation of the Gothic tradition: religiously agnostic, politically liberal and ethically humane. For the first time, Campbell’s works are interpreted in the contexts of trends in postmodernist and posthumanist thought and compared explicitly to King’s, and his contribution to both Gothic studies and wider contemporary literature is appraised.

Science Fiction Film develops a historical and cultural approach to the genre that moves beyond close readings of iconography and formal conventions. It explores how this increasingly influential genre has been constructed from disparate elements into a hybrid genre.Science Fiction Film goes beyond a textual exploration of these films to place them within a larger network of influences that includes studio politics and promotional discourses. The book also challenges the perceived limits of the genre - it includes a wide range of films, from canonical SF, such as Le voyage dans la lune, Star Wars and Blade Runner, to films that stretch and reshape the definition of the genre. This expansion of generic focus offers an innovative approach for students and fans of science fiction alike.

RATIONAL CHOICE AND POLITICAL POWER

RATIONAL CHOICE AND POLITICAL POWER

Keith M. Dowding

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd

This illuminating title applies rational choice theory to the power debate, demonstrating the fallacious arguments of all sides. Power is analysed as a bargaining game where the power of actors is assessed in terms of the resources to which they have access. By distinguishing luck from power it shows that many groups widely regarded as powerful are merely lucky, albeit as a result of systematic features of society. This is one of the first conceptual books on power directly to engage both classical and modern empirical debates on the power structure at both the local and national level.

Although much has been written about the conduct of the war in South Africa, very little has been written about how it was regarded on the world stage by powers both great and small. This collection of specially commissioned essays seeks for the first time to put the Boer War (1899-1902) in its international context. Each of the core chapters focuses on the perspective of one country (France, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Russia, and the United States) and assesses the extent to which each national government tried to capitalize on Britain's embarrassment and distraction while often entangled in imperialist ventures of their own. The anglophobia of many of the nations' press, the activities of pro-Boer organizations, and the shaping of public and parliamentary opinion are examined alongside the real politics and diplomatic considerations that took precedence. In addition, there are summation chapters that examine both the origins of the war and its legacy for Britain's expansionist ambitions. Together these essays present the latest findings on a watershed in international relations that heralded substantive changes of attitude and policy on the part of national governments towards their dependencies and had far-reaching consequences for alliance systems and the international balance of power at the start of the twentieth century.

Bloodfeud in Scotland 1573-1625

Feuding had an effect on the history of most of Europe. Scotland provides a fascinating focus for the study of the bloodfeud because feuding survived until remarkably late there, and thus is much better documented than in other European societies. This examination of the Scottish evidence shows its relevance to the wider European community to which the Scots belonged, reveals much about the nature of the bloodfeud in general, and explores the changes in society which at last brought about its suppression. The bloodfeud has been the subject of anthropological rather than historical investigation, partly because it largely disappeared at an early stage in the development of literacy in Europe and has never been a fashionable research topic for historians. In this study of fifteenth- and sixteenth-century feud in Scotland, Keith Brown focuses on its context in society, politics and the ideology that served to uproot the tradition. The book will be of value to historians of many different cultures and periods.
The Policy of the Entente

The Policy of the Entente

Wilson Keith M.

Cambridge University Press

This collection of essays makes a major contribution to the growing debate on British foreign policy before the First World War, and mounts a sustained critique of the received interpretation that invites comparison with the work of Fritz Fischer on the foreign policy of Imperial Germany. The Policy of the Entente presents a realistic assessment of British priorities in the years before 1914, and considers the fundamental and conflicting pressures that determined the formulation of foreign policy. The author concludes that British policy, far from being increasingly Eurocentric, was emphatically imperial: indeed many of the difficulties faced by Britain's rulers stemmed from their inability to live up to this Imperial self-image.
