A Vacation for Victory

A Vacation for Victory

Kelsey M. Lonie

MCGILL-QUEEN'S UNIVERSITY PRESS

Serving not in uniforms or factories but in orchards, fields, and farms, the women and girls of Canada’s Women’s Land Army – the youngest of whom were known as “farmerettes” – planted, picked, and packed food that sustained the nation while men fought overseas. A Vacation for Victory brings this fascinating Second World War history to life. Blending creative nonfiction with archival letters, newspaper clippings, interviews, and her own grandmother’s recollections, Kelsey Lonie portrays the working lives of women who formed Canada’s farm front. Their stories and photographs reveal how they understood both their labour and their changing place in society. Unlike other Allied countries, Canada did not create a national land army; instead, provinces took the lead. Ontario recruited thousands of women, while British Columbia’s program faltered until prairie women, eager for new experiences elsewhere, signed up. Patriotic duty, however, is only part of Lonie’s narrative: wealthy landowners expanded orchards, leaving the hardest, dirtiest jobs to marginalized workers, thus exposing how racism and capitalism shaped wartime farming industries. Richly illustrated with photographs, postcards, and cultural ephemera, A Vacation for Victory offers powerful accounts of grit, inequity, and resilience, restoring women to the centre of Canada’s wartime effort.

Markets filled with mixed odours and the buzz of merchants desperate to make a sale. Labourers working strenuously long hours for little pay. Children of all ages roaming unsupervised, forced to raise themselves. Streets like mazes, where no one would want to find themselves wandering alone after dark. This is certain within the City, the only known civilization: poverty and corruption are inescapable. The only uncertainty lies behind the vast, red-brick wall outside the City limits, its existence ignored out of fear and distrust. Eden, a young girl who yearns for more, is given an extraordinary opportunity to see what, or who, resides behind the ancient wall. She will have to decide for herself whether to be afraid or comforted by what she finds.

After the fairies use a significant magical spell, the town suffers the consequences that come along with it. Lexi and her family are separated, as the town encounters turmoil. Lexi and Alexander must come together to fight one last battle of good and evil to save their town. "The dead had been unburied and the evil had been born once again. Evil-this was evil. It never was; there was absolutely no escape from my hell-chained life."
Education and Ethno-Politics

Education and Ethno-Politics

The Iraqi Disputed Territories consist of 15 districts stretching across four northern governorates. While an administrative solution for the disputed territories remains evasive, minority groups across the region have been pulled into a clash over demographic composition as each disputed district faces ethnically defined claims. Meanwhile, inter-ethnic communal tensions are rising and questions of identity increasingly overshadow day-to-day life. There has been little research on the impact of heightened identity politics on the everyday lives of citizens. Regardless of the final administrative outcome, the multi-ethnic population of the region requires services and systems of co-existence, and in the fragile ethno-political environment of the disputed territories, the way in which the education system manages ethnic diversity is crucial. It is within this context that Education and Ethno-Politics examines the development of education systems across the region post 2003. Drawing on over 50 interviews with regional education officials and community representatives, the book presents the impact of amplified ethno-politics on the reconstruction of education in Iraq. It provides the first academic exploration into education in the region, exploring the significance of cultural reproduction and the link between demands for ethnically specific education, societal security and the wider political contestation over the territory. A comprehensive analysis of the powerful role of education in identity-based conflicts, this book offers a highly insightful examination of Iraq’s past and present, as well as formulating policy recommendations for its future. It is an essential resource for students, scholars and policy makers with focus on the Middle East, specifically Iraqi and Kurdish studies, as well as those interested in Education policy and Conflict studies.
