The Feast of Enemies

The Feast of Enemies contains twelve reflections or meditations intended for the time prior to the celebration of Holy Communion within the worship service. Such presentations cannot properly be called sermons because of their length and because of their specific aim: that of helping to prepare members of the congregation for participation in the sacred encounter at the Lord's table. Each of these meditations is based on a scripture text. Among the themes found here are the following: Hunger of the Heart; By Invitation Only; Here's to the Kingdom; Bread for the World; Of Flags and Nations... and a Table; We in Christ, Christ in Us; A Table Set for the World; and others. Each is a sensitive and inspirational means of focusing the congregation's thoughts on the bread and cup they are about to share. Kenneth L. Gibble, an ordained clergyman in the Church of the Brethren, received his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Bethany Theological Seminary, Oak Brook, Illinois. For fourteen years he served as pastor of Ridgeway Community Church of the Brethren in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The author of four books in addition to the present volume, he has contributed articles to over fifty religious periodicals across a wide denominational spectrum. He and his wife Ann and daughter Katie continue to live in Harrisburg, where he is presently a freelance writer and a consultant for parish ministries.

Psychology and Philosophy are distinct disciplines, yet close neighbors. Each discipline studies the human being as a single consciousness, and for all of their differences, there is a remarkably intimate relation between their contributions to a truthful understanding of the human person. Philosophy provides a foundation and horizon for the life of consciousness that engages in the very activities so precisely analyzed by psychology. Both the dimensions of philosophical reflection and psychic activity are essential aspects of the integrity and psychic health of the human person - a remarkable being who is unique in its self presence and the most interior of beings, yet also relational with others and the most open to all of being. These properties of relational uniqueness and open interiority shape our actions, which at their best are open to truth and the perfective power of being in general. At the same time the human person at his or her best is conscious of admiration of the panoply of being, and even further, open to adoration of being in its ultimate form - God. In chapter one of ""Person and Psyche"", Kenneth Schmitz reflects upon the general foundation of each and every kind of being, with especial reference to human beings. In chapter two, he addresses the dynamics with which we are endowed in the very origins of our human nature. In chapter three, these two principles are considered in light of the sphere of human freedom, with the value and promise that freedom holds for the human person. It is particularly in the concluding chapter four that Schmitz deliberates upon some of the issues that arise in psychology and psycho-therapy in order to identify their significance for understanding the transcendental characteristics of being, with marked attention to truth, goodness, and beauty. He also searches out the significance of psychological and therapeutic issues for the primitive inclinations with which our human nature is endowed, and takes them up in consideration of that freedom that is the human person's crown and exaltation, even as that freedom penetrates and transforms the human psyche.

In the end, Birch confronts his family's killers, but finds his lust for retribution is hollow. Reunited with his younger brothers, Birch comes to terms with life and reaches his own personal redemption.

Five Fold Cycle - Method of Healing Personal Hurt
In this book I outline a 'Method of Healing Personal Hurt' entitled the "Five Fold Cycle." It is a systems approach to problem solving and is meant to be used to aid in the healing of memories, healing of emotions, healing of self-image, healing of relationships, and other inner healing prayers. It is a method of fine-tuning healing prayer to better utilize the Lord's 'pruning/cleansing'.Scripture describes the Lord's pruning and cleansing in this manner: "I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit." ( John 15:1-2)It is a simple message from the Lord. He says we are to be 'in Him' and then he will 'prune' (cleanse) us.Let us look at the simplicity of the process: We come to God in prayer. We focus on an issue or problem, asking for the Lord's help through His Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit guides us as we take it to the Lord in prayer, asking for cleansing/pruning. After the cleansing we ask the Lord to fill us with His blessings. And finally, we move the focus off of ourselves and refocus on the Lord in thanksgiving and praise. Why do we need inner healing? We are all broken people It doesn't matter who you are, what family you grew up in, nor your financial circumstances - you have been hurt. Yes, we are all broken people needing the Lord's healing. As you learn to use the Five Fold Cycle to heal you're life's hurts, you will find it is easy to teach others - a healing outreach. It is a simple method of healing personal hurt.
