Radiation Risks in Perspective

Radiation Risks in Perspective

Kenneth L. Mossman

Public misperception of radiological risk consistently directs limited resources toward managing minimal or even phantom risks at great cost to government and industry with no measurable benefit to overall public health. The public’s inability to comprehend small theoretical risks arrived at through inherently uncertain formulae, coupled with an irrational push to eliminate all risk with no contextual understanding of overall benefit, results in a forfeiture of valuable advances in technology in favor of an illusion of safety.Radiation Risks in Perspective uses general concepts underlying radiological risk as a model to illuminate the fundamental problems in public perception, reaction, and policy when faced with possible health risks. Presenting three distinct themes, the author summarizes the causes for the failure of the current system and proposes methods for correction. Beginning with a discussion of the methods used to measure threat, the author weighs the nebulous assessment of risk with the use of a quantifiable assessment of hazardous dose, which uses actual numbers that the public can readily understand and that decision makers can confidently use to enact policy and measure success. Secondly, the author addresses the contextual balancing of cost versus benefit when prioritizing expenditure, specifically emphasizing that it is inappropriate to analyze and discuss individual risks without regard to the presence of other risks. Finally, the author analyzes the public’s tendency to push toward zero risk tolerance, an extremist approach that leads to unreasonable restrictions on technologies, excessive regulatory compliance costs, and the ultimate loss of goods and services. With detailed explanations and illustrative case studies, Radiation Risks in Perspective offers scientists, lawyers, engineers, policy makers, and public health professionals, the skills they need for a rational evaluation of risk.

"Understanding Misunderstanding as Cross-Cultural Emic Clash" examines the crucial role that language plays in the numerous problems encountered in contacts between people from divergent cultural backgrounds. "The Importance of Purposive Behavior in Text Analysis" explores the centrality of establishing the relationship of reality to what is actually expressed in a text.

Living Our Beliefs: The United Methodist Way

You can believe anything and be a Methodist, just so long as you're sincere. Such a misperception has deep historical and cultural roots.Explore a basic explanation of the beliefs and practices of the United Methodist Church as defined in Part II of The Book of Discipline. Uncover a deeper understanding and experience of Christian faith as you embrace the United Methodist way. "Beliefs are to be lived; doctrine is to be practiced," writes Carder in this updated edition of his 1996 bestseller. "The authenticity of beliefs lie in their ability to shape people and communities into the image of Christ and to promote holiness and happiness. ...The important test of the validity of doctrines and beliefs for United Methodists is the kind of character they produce in individuals and communities and the actions they inspire in the world." Living Our Beliefs is essential reading for new members, confirmation classes and small group studies. As one reviewer says, "Bishop Carder invites us to both understand and live our beliefs. With deep understanding of Wesley's teaching, he inspires us to practice what we preach. That is the United Methodist way."The Leader's Guide for this course, Living Our United Methodist Beliefs, by George Hovaness Donigan may be purchased here.
The Feast of Enemies

The Feast of Enemies

The Feast of Enemies contains twelve reflections or meditations intended for the time prior to the celebration of Holy Communion within the worship service. Such presentations cannot properly be called sermons because of their length and because of their specific aim: that of helping to prepare members of the congregation for participation in the sacred encounter at the Lord's table. Each of these meditations is based on a scripture text. Among the themes found here are the following: Hunger of the Heart; By Invitation Only; Here's to the Kingdom; Bread for the World; Of Flags and Nations... and a Table; We in Christ, Christ in Us; A Table Set for the World; and others. Each is a sensitive and inspirational means of focusing the congregation's thoughts on the bread and cup they are about to share. Kenneth L. Gibble, an ordained clergyman in the Church of the Brethren, received his Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degrees from Bethany Theological Seminary, Oak Brook, Illinois. For fourteen years he served as pastor of Ridgeway Community Church of the Brethren in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. The author of four books in addition to the present volume, he has contributed articles to over fifty religious periodicals across a wide denominational spectrum. He and his wife Ann and daughter Katie continue to live in Harrisburg, where he is presently a freelance writer and a consultant for parish ministries.
Person and Psyche

Person and Psyche

Kenneth L. Schmitz

Psychology and Philosophy are distinct disciplines, yet close neighbors. Each discipline studies the human being as a single consciousness, and for all of their differences, there is a remarkably intimate relation between their contributions to a truthful understanding of the human person. Philosophy provides a foundation and horizon for the life of consciousness that engages in the very activities so precisely analyzed by psychology. Both the dimensions of philosophical reflection and psychic activity are essential aspects of the integrity and psychic health of the human person - a remarkable being who is unique in its self presence and the most interior of beings, yet also relational with others and the most open to all of being. These properties of relational uniqueness and open interiority shape our actions, which at their best are open to truth and the perfective power of being in general. At the same time the human person at his or her best is conscious of admiration of the panoply of being, and even further, open to adoration of being in its ultimate form - God. In chapter one of ""Person and Psyche"", Kenneth Schmitz reflects upon the general foundation of each and every kind of being, with especial reference to human beings. In chapter two, he addresses the dynamics with which we are endowed in the very origins of our human nature. In chapter three, these two principles are considered in light of the sphere of human freedom, with the value and promise that freedom holds for the human person. It is particularly in the concluding chapter four that Schmitz deliberates upon some of the issues that arise in psychology and psycho-therapy in order to identify their significance for understanding the transcendental characteristics of being, with marked attention to truth, goodness, and beauty. He also searches out the significance of psychological and therapeutic issues for the primitive inclinations with which our human nature is endowed, and takes them up in consideration of that freedom that is the human person's crown and exaltation, even as that freedom penetrates and transforms the human psyche.
