An exclusive look at one of the world's most successful and controversial companies, and the mysterious family behind it. BMW is arguably the most admired carmaker in the world. It's financial performance is the envy of its competitors, and BMW products inspire near-fanatical loyalty. While many carmakers struggle with falling sales, profits and market share, demand for BMWs continues to grow, frequently outpacing production. Now, David Kiley-Detroit Bureau Chief at USA Today and author of Getting the Bugs Out, which covered Volkswagen's demise and rebirth, goes inside the fabled German automaker to see how it does what it does so well. With unprecedented access to BMW executives, Kiley goes behind the walls of BMW's famed "Four Cylinders" headquarters in Munich at a time when the company is in its most aggressive, and some say riskiest, expansion in its history and when some of the company's new products, like the 7 Series sedan and Z4 roadster, are for the first time drawing as many barbs from critics as bouquets. Kiley covers intimate details of the boardroom drama surrounding the company's nearly disastrous acquisition and subsequent sale of the British Rover Group and its expansion into selling MINI and Rolls Royce cars. Besides being a world-class carmaker, BMW is also considered one of the smartest consumer marketing companies and Kiley explores the extraordinary value and management of the BMW brand mystique. He also takes a revealing look at the mysterious and ultra-private Quandt family of Bad Homburg Germany, which owns a controlling stake in BMW: Johanna and Susanne Quandt, two of the wealthiest women in Europe and Stefan Quandt, one of the wealthiest bachelors on the continent. David Kiley (Ann Arbor, MI) is the Detroit Bureau Chief at USA Today who has covered the auto industry for 17 years. He has been featured on Nightline, CNBC, CNN, MSNBC, NPR and the Today show. He is also the author of Getting the Bugs Out: The Rise, Fall, and Comeback of Volkswagen in America (0-471-26304-4), also available from Wiley.

Uniforms of the Ancient Greek World, An Illustrated Encyclopedia of
The military history of the ancient peoples of the Middle East encompasses the rise, the rule and the decline and fall of a succession of great empire-builders - from the Sumerians and Akkadians in the 23rd century BCE to the Macedonians led by Alexander the Great in c.330BCE. In the course of these millennia, great military minds developed the war chariot, the cavalry charge of mounted soldiers, the fierce and disciplined infantry formations of the Greek or Macedonian phalanx; they invented the siege tower, battering ram, onager catapult and other tools used to gain entry to a heavily fortified city. Fighting men wielded dagger, sword, bow and arrows, hammer, pike, spear and the 20ft (6m) sarissa used by the Macedonians; they and their leaders developed body armour, greaves, helmets and a variety of shields to protect themselves. In tactics, clothing, weaponry and other equipment of war, military men learned from both their allies and their enemies as they searched for the improvements that would give them the edge when they most needed it - in battle. This book details the costume of the ancient Greek armies and its enemies, from the first decades of tribal battles through the Peloponnesian wars, up to the end of Alexander's eastern Empire. A detailed and accessible visual study of the fighting dress and arms of the period, it is also a glimpse of the complexity in a vast period and area. The volume explores the arms, armour and military clothing of some of the great ancient peoples: the Sumerians, the Hittites, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Persians and the Macedonians. A very large number of peoples - many of them nomads - came into decisive contact with these eight kingdoms, including Scythians, Phrygians, Hebrews, the Sea Peoples, the Mitanni and the Medes. Two vast empires, those of the Persians under the Achaemenid dynasty and the Macedonians led by Alexander the Great, arose on opposite sides of the ancient world. They came into deadly contact after the Persians had twice attempted and twice failed to invade Greece; and after the Macedonians had conquered Greece in the aftermath of that great clash of civilizations. Alexander took over the Persian empire that Cyrus the Great had built, but then his empire in turn lost its own landholding to internal squabbles and settlements, to be finally overcome by that great behemoth of the ancient world, Rome. With evocative fine art paintings and sculptures and the 600 specially commissioned illustrations, this lavish, intensively researched volume offers an unprecedented study of the uniforms of the period.

The Astounding Misadventures of Rory Collins

The Astounding Misadventures of Rory Collins

Rory Collins accidentally misses his mother's funeral and then learns she committed suicide and he's to blame. This is shortly after he impregnated two virgins he felt sorry for. It was a rough sophomore year of college by any standards. "For more than twenty years, Brian Kiley has delighted me with his inventive and prolific wit, so it is no surprise that he has written such a terrific novel. "The Astounding Misadventures of Rory Collins" is boldly comedic, poignant, dark, unpredictable, and just plain fun. Congratulations, Brian, I am bitterly jealous." -Conan O'Brien "Brian Kiley's unique genius as a standup comedian rests on his ability to project innocence and sweet-natured guilelessness even as his imagination leads you to some dark and strange places. The same and then some can be said for the title character of Kiley's terrific first novel, The Astounding Misadventures of Rory Collins. Haunted by the specter of the world's worst mom, Rory enters manhood as the sort of timid, passive shlump whom predators can spot a mile off. Yet as you follow him from one picaresque episode to another-ill-advised sex, barroom brawls, and abusive bosses-you can't help but pull for the guy. At heart he's just a kind, decent person trying to make sense of a bizarro world. Not surprisingly, the book has its share of great lines and laugh-out-loud moments. But there's more going on. From the deceptively powerful opening scene to the devastating final line, Astounding Misadventures marks the emergence of a new literary voice. The gentle intelligence of Kiley's prose reminds me of the great comedian-turned-author, Steve Martin, with the possible difference that while Martin's characters seek peace and quiet above the fray, Kiley's plunge headfirst into the tragicomic messiness of life." -Charles Slack, author of "Hetty", "The Noble Obsession" and "Blue Fairways" "If you like dark, dry humor--and I do--you will love this story of a young man from such a dysfunctional family that his only dream is to be normal. Instead, what he learns is that no one is really "normal," and that the most important goal is to love and be loved. Raised by a psychotic mother and a passive father, Rory is also painfully passive, until a moment of rebellion in a supermarket changes the course of his life and sets him on the path to fulfillment and happiness. Laughs abound, and the ending is surprisingly touching." -Judith Arnold "Read this. I loved it. The author's writing is so precise. I fell in love with Rory from the beginning and my heart broke a little in each of his misadventures. But don't worry, the book is hilarious. Each chapter is like a little joke -- and it all leads to a satisfying and heartwarming conclusion." -Karen Bergreen, author of "Pretty Polly"

California's response to COVID-19 has been the worst in America, with incomparable economic destruction, loss of life, and violations of democratic norms. In this devastating critique, California Legislator Kevin Kiley traces these tragic outcomes to the self-interested and lawless actions of Governor Gavin Newsom, who expressly set out to use the virus as an "opportunity" for a "new progressive era." Kiley successfully prosecuted the legal case against Newsom, winning a judgment from a California Superior Court that the Governor abused his emergency powers and violated the Constitution. Now, using the same engaging and evidence-rich style that has attracted millions to his Capitol Quagmire blog, Kiley offers an alarming inside-the-Capitol account of how Newsom seized absolute power more to hype his presidential ambitions than to protect the California public. This urgently needed book makes the case for not only the removal of the most corrupt Governor in America, but the revival of liberty and self-government in the Golden State: a new politics of sanity and decency to save the California Dream before it's too late. About The Author: Kevin Kiley was reelected to the State Assembly with the highest vote total for a Republican in California history. A graduate of Harvard and Yale Law School and former high school teacher in South Central Los Angeles, he is the only 100 percent citizen-backed California Legislator, refusing all funding from the Special Interests that spent millions electing Gavin Newsom.
