Drawing on a four-year study of the last 40 years of education reform in Los Angeles, Learning from L.A. captures the sweeping change in American education. It puts forth a provocative argument: while school reformers and education historians have tended to focus on the success or failure of individual initiatives, they have overlooked the fact that, over the past several decades, the institution of public education itself has been transformed. Colorful characters, dramatic encounters, and political skirmishes enliven this rich account of the wrenching transformations that took place in the Los Angeles Unified School District from the 1960s onward. The book focuses particularly on four key ideas that emerged through a succession of reforms beginning in the 1990s—decentralization, standards, school choice, and grassroots participation. Though the particular plans that gave rise to these ideas may have faded, the ideas themselves have taken root and developed in ways that those who inaugurated or participated in these reforms never anticipated.

This book explains how and why to get an international library job, what to expect when you arrive in your host country, and how to overcome challenges in your new home. For those who possess an ALA-accredited degree, there are opportunities to work in library settings around the world—and many of these attractive career options do not require non-English language skills or an EEC/Commonwealth citizenship. This guide to library work in countries outside the United States and Canada explains the benefits of taking on a library position in an international setting, how to find such a job, what to expect in working in a library outside of North America, and what strategies to employ to be successful and happy living and working in your host country. This guide answers all the questions that a librarian considering a position abroad would have, and it also covers subjects and concerns that might not be as obvious. Based on the direct experiences of the authors as well as anecdotal accounts from other librarians who have worked around the world, the book informs readers about common cultural differences with the application and interview process; explains how workplaces and working assumptions can be different from American expectations; profiles the different procedures, collection scope, curricular support, and intellectual freedom policies of libraries outside the United States and Canada; and describes the unique experience of moving to another country and living as an expat.

In Reform or Die, seven women theologians avoid the double pitfall of destructive pessimism and blissful optimism and propose an approach which is based on biblical, theological, but also sociological and pastoral expertise. They address the most urgent subjects: the lessons of the abuse crisis, the place given to women, synodality, welcoming the poorest, and the challenges of inclusion in the contemporary world. "These essays are seven invitations to dare to live out the Gospel in freedom, determination, and boldness." So states the foreword to this collection of essays by seven women theologians who address issues of concern in today's Catholic Church--issues such as the fallout from the sexual abuse scandals, the structure of religious life, the role of women in the Church, the importance of listening to the poor, and the need for inclusion and inculturation. "This inspiring and challenging volume is a timely examination of conscience for a faith community continuing to grapple with the many pressing topics that affect Catholic Christians across the globe. This book invites deep reflection and should be read by anyone interested in listening to the guiding impulse of the Holy Spirit today " --Daniel P. Horan, professor of philosophy, religious studies, and theology, Saint Mary's College, Notre Dame, Indiana. "The concerns expressed by these European Catholic feminists will resonate with women and men around the world. Faced with the abuse crisis and the failure of the Church to address women's concerns, they challenge the Church to dare to change." --Susan A. Ross, Loyola University Chicago (emerita) ditions Salvator solicited the participation of seven female theologians who have biblical, theological, sociological, and pastoral expertise. They consist of scholars, journalists, and historians. They all contributed or published works in the theological field throughout their careers which received wide media coverage. +

In a captivating departure, Larry Watson, "a writer whose work is worthy of prizes" ("Los Angeles Times Book Review"), unveils a portrait of faith, obsession, and enduring love -- and a work of greater tenderness than anything he has yet written. "Laura" Love captures Paul Finley, in, of all places, his own bedroom -- literally waking him from his dreams. The night he discovers Laura Pettit standing at his windowsill, Paul is eleven years old, a boy naturally inclined toward seriousness, precociously adept at the art of watching the world without being watched. Laura is twenty-two, a fiercely passionate and independent poet already experiencing the first flickers of fame, a beautiful woman on the brink of seducing Paul's father. No matter; Paul is smitten. When she leaves him to rejoin the grown-ups' party downstairs, Laura issues Paul a wholly impossible command, one that will haunt and consume both of them for the rest of their lives: "Forget me." Laying bare the inner life of one man during the course of nearly four decades, Larry Watson delivers a riveting treatise on the excruciating power of love -- and two of the most remarkable characters in recent American literature. Infused with breathtaking pathos and delicate grace, "Laura" is an extraordinary triumph of the novelist's art.

How do men imagine women? In the poetry of Petrarch and his English successors-Wyatt, Donne, and Marvell-the male poet persistently imagines pursuing a woman, Laura, whom he pursues even as she continues to deny his affections. Critics have long held that, in objectifying Laura, these male-authored texts deny the imaginative, intellectual, and physical life of the woman they idealize. In Laura, Barbara L. Estrin counters this traditional view by focusing not on the generative powers of the male poet, but on the subjectivity of the imagined woman and the imaginative space of the poems she occupies. Through close readings of the Rime sparse and the works of Wyatt, Donne, and Marvell, Estrin uncovers three Lauras: Laura-Daphne, who denies sexuality; Laura-Eve, who returns the poet’s love; and Laura-Mercury, who reinvents her own life. Estrin claims that in these three guises Laura subverts both genre and gender, thereby introducing multiple desires into the many layers of the poems. Drawing upon genre and gender theories advanced by Jean-FranÇois Lyotard and Judith Butler to situate female desire in the poem’s framework, Estrin shows how genre and gender in the Petrarchan tradition work together to undermine the stability of these very concepts.Estrin’s Laura constitutes a fundamental reconceptualization of the Petrarchan tradition and contributes greatly to the postmodern reassessment of the Renaissance period. In its descriptions of how early modern poets formulate questions about sexuality, society and poetry, Laura will appeal to scholars of the English and Italian Renaissance, of gender studies, and of literary criticism and theory generally.
