Online platforms now constitute so significant a mode of wealth production that many argue a new kind of economic order - ‘platform capitalism’ has emerged. But the platform vehicle has also provided a new organisational dynamic for criminal entrepreneurs, one that significantly adds to other advantages of digital technology exploited by earlier (cyber) criminals such as hyperconnection and capacity augmentation. The book traces the emergence of a shadow digital crime economy which both feeds off and contributes to the way digital societies now produce wealth and explores the role of the platform in underpinning this. It sets out three modalities of platform criminality; the emergence of criminal platforms; the targeting of commercial platforms and the misuse of platform by key institutional agents such as tech companies and the state. By exploring the reciprocal relations between legitimate and illegitimate platforms it suggests how platforms have not only changed the practice and organisation of cybercrime but have been instrumental in unravelling key elements of civil society, not least the legal consensus upon which democracy depends. It argues that ‘post-truth’ and the crisis of objectivity in which platforms are implicated lead directly into a ‘post-crime’ world, one where the boundaries between the legal and the criminal are becoming increasingly blurred. Shortly after the end of World War II high-speed digital computing machines were being developed. It was clear that the mathematical aspects of com­ putation needed to be reexamined in order to make efficient use of high-speed digital computers for mathematical computations. Accordingly, under the leadership of Min a Rees, John Curtiss, and others, an Institute for Numerical Analysis was set up at the University of California at Los Angeles under the sponsorship of the National Bureau of Standards. A similar institute was formed at the National Bureau of Standards in Washington, D. C. In 1949 J. Barkeley Rosser became Director of the group at UCLA for a period of two years. During this period we organized a seminar on the study of solu­ tions of simultaneous linear equations and on the determination of eigen­ values. G. Forsythe, W. Karush, C. Lanczos, T. Motzkin, L. J. Paige, and others attended this seminar. We discovered, for example, that even Gaus­ sian elimination was not well understood from a machine point of view and that no effective machine oriented elimination algorithm had been developed. During this period Lanczos developed his three-term relationship and I had the good fortune of suggesting the method of conjugate gradients. We dis­ covered afterward that the basic ideas underlying the two procedures are essentially the same. The concept of conjugacy was not new to me. In a joint paper with G. D.

The origin, dispersal, deposition and burial of natural sediment grains is the central concern of sedimentology. The subject is truly inter­ disciplinary, commands the attention of Earth scientists, is of consider­ able interest to fluid dynamicists and civil engineers, and it finds widespread practical applications in industry. Sedimentology may be approached from two viewpoints: a descrip­ tive approach, as exemplified by traditional petrography and facies analysis, and a quantitative approach through the physical and chemical sciences. Both approaches are complementary and must be used in tandem if the recent remarkable progress in the field is to be sustained. This text aims to introduce such a combined approach to senior undergraduate students, graduate students and to interested professional Earth scientists. Thus the many descriptive diagrams in the text are counterbalanced by the use of basic physical and chemical reasoning through equations. I have tried to construct a text that follows logically on from the origin of sediment grains through fluid flow, transport, deposition and diagenesis (the change from sediment to rock). The text has been written assuming that some basic previous instruction has been given in the Earth sciences and in general physics and chemistry. Certain important derivations are given in appendices. I have avoided advanced mathematical treatment since it is my opinion that recogni­ tion of the basic physical or chemical basis to a problem is more important to the student than the formal mathematical reduction of poorly gathered data.
