A molecular biologist travels to the Amazon rainforest to investigate a genomic link to human spirituality....Sparked by a mysterious hallucinogenic experience, Brett Roberts catches his first glimpse of a portal to spiritual awareness. Desperate to find a biological explanation, he enters the field of biotechnology and dabbles in one experiment after another as the field matures. Brett's quest eventually leads him to the indigenous tribes of the Amazon rainforest, where under the guidance of a Yanomami shaman, his next encounter with the drug yopo proves much more enlightening. An answer to the ultimate question is within Brett's grasp, but not if Alfredo Ruiz can prevent it, a nefarious scientist from S o Paulo who has been following Brett's experiments for years.
Author of The Canterbury Tales and foundation of the English literary tradition, Geoffrey Chaucer has been popular with readers, writers and scholars for over 600 years. More than 4600 books, essays, poems, stories, recordings and websites pertaining to Chaucer were published between 1997 and 2010, and this bibliography identifies each of them separately, providing publication information and a descriptive summary of contents. The bibliography also offers several useful discovery aids to enable users to locate individual items of interest, whether it be a study of the Wife of Bath’s love life, a video about Chaucer’s language, advice on how to teach a particular poem by Chaucer, or a murder mystery that features Chaucer as detective. Useful for scholars, teachers and students alike, this volume is a must for academic libraries.
An exchange of letters on prayer between British diplomat Mark Allen and Carmelite nun Ruth Burrows. 'I had to read some books, looking for help. Some set out to teach how to pray. I was very interested in these because they appeared to offer to take the problem head on. But somehow they didn't. They offered techniques about how to sit quietly and about some people finding it helpful to create a "praying corner" in the home. All this seemed like other people's Christmases - nice, of course, but happening at arm's length. At a deeper level, I had a horse sense that concentrating on creating a state which I might enjoy and be able to say I had mastered, I could not accept that there wasn't something more than this to prayer.' Thus Mark Allen, on his own view of the problem of prayer at the time when he first met Ruth Burrows. The friendship that followed led to a correspondence and, in due course, led to this book - to these Letters on Prayer, in which cant and technique and simple nostrums are eschewed, but prayer and faith are discussed both in depth and in a language we can all understand.

Rendering the Word in Theological Hermeneutics
Mark Alan Bowald
Ashgate Publishing Limited
2007
sidottu
This book proposes an original typology for grasping the differences between diverse types of biblical interpretation, fashioned in a triangle around a major theological and philosophical lacuna: the relation between divine and human action. Despite their purported concern for reading God's word, most modern and postmodern approaches to biblical interpretation do not seriously consider the role of divine agency as having a real influence in and on the process of reading Scripture. Mark Bowald seeks to correct and clarify this deficiency by demonstrating the inevitable role that divine agency plays in contemporary proposals in relation to human agency enacted in the composition of the biblical text and the reader. This book presents an important contribution to the emerging field of theological hermeneutics. Bowald discusses in depth the hermeneutics of George Lindbeck, Hans Frei, Kevin Vanhoozer, Francis Watson, Stephen Fowl, David Kelsey, Werner Jeanrond, Karl Barth, James K.A. Smith, and Nicholas Wolterstorff.

Medical Education in Oklahoma, Volume III chronicles the development of the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center from 1964-1996-a tempestuous period at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine. During these three decades college and hospital administrators and physicians witnessed conflicts, challenges, and restructuring. Based on newspaper accounts, interviews, Regents' meetings minutes, and the authors' personal recollections, the book traces the metamorphosis of the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine and Health Sciences Center from an enterprise dedicated solely to scholarship and education into a multi-million-dollar medical and research complex.
From 1911 to 1917 Craftman Farms was the home of Gustav Stickley, one of the central figures in the American Arts and Crafts Movement. This book unravels the, sometimes contradictory, ideas that informed many of the artists and literary figures in the progressive era in America.

The level of noise about the Arab world is increasing. Security and energy are major concerns. Wars and globalisation are pushing the Arabs and Westerners into closer contact. Understanding the Arabs has never been more important, never so critical to our dealings with the Arab world where the personal often matters most. Yet, few books have tried to bring out this personal factor, to describe the people behind the events and strategic trends, to say what they are like and why. This book recognises the Arabs' diversity and then reaches beyond to identify the core themes which give the Arab world its distinctive personality and sense of community. These themes - family, religion, Arabism and power - track an experience very different to our own. They illuminate the Arabs values and aspirations, the dilemmas they face in a time of change. Mark Allen's brilliant analysis comes of 35 years' study of the Arab world, 'being both friend and enemy'. His insight into faith, culture and attitudes to power explains much about the contradictions, the restlessness and the tension we now see in the region.

Mark Allen found no suitable published book to prepare his son for First Holy Communion.First Holy Communion in the Roman Catholic Church is something of the greatest significance equivalent to confirmation in the Church of England or Bar Mitzvah for Jewish children. A lot of the material published is trite and worst of all tends to patronise the children for whom it is intended. To help parents and teachers answer questions about the ceremony Mark Allen offers readings and background from scripture and catechism.Children can be hard-headed tend to like stories and facts. The narrative of the Bible provides facts, events which happened, and along with them the objective truths of revelation. The Mass is our sacramental encounter with the person of Jesus. Preparation therefore should be based on him and on the Gospel story of His life. The preparation should reflect the unity of the mass, its liturgy of the Word and the Eucharistic Rite, the mystery of Christ in our community as Church.Routine is the key aid to progress. The course provided in this book is based on a series of half hour sessions for parent and teacher with the child. It is thus both practical and down to earth.

This book was written to aid quality technicians and engineers. It is a result of 30 years of quality-related work experience. To that end, the intent of this book is to provide the quality professional working in virtually any industry a quick, convenient, and comprehensive guide to properly conducting design of experiments (DOE) for the purpose of process optimization. This is a practical introduction to the basics of DOE, intended for people who have never been exposed to design of experiments, been intimidated in their attempts to learn about DOE, or have not appreciated the potential of this family of tools in their process improvement and optimization efforts. In addition, this book is a useful reference when preparing for and taking many of the ASQ quality certification examinations, including the Certified Quality Technician (CQT), Certified Six Sigma Green Belt (CSSGB), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), Certified Six Sigma Black Belt (CSSBB), and Certified Reliability Engineer (CRE).
For the past decade, process validation issues ranked within the top six of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) form 483 observation findings issued each year. This poses a substantial problem for the medical device industry and is the reason why the authors wanted to write this book. The authors will share their collective knowledge: to help organizations improve patient safety and increase profitability while maintaining a state of compliance with regulations and standards. The intent of this book is to provide manufacturing quality professionals working in virtually any industry a quick, convenient, and comprehensive guide to properly conduct process validations that meet regulatory and certification requirements. It will aid quality technicians, engineers, managers, and others that need to plan, conduct, and monitor validation activities.
