The Bible Marksman: A Course in Bible - Marking, covering, in a simple and comprehensive system, the most important Bible topics, and comp
The digital copies of this book are available for free at First Fruits website. place.asburyseminary.edu/firstfruits PREFACE THE following course in Bible-marking was pursued, during its first appearance in The Christian Endeavor World, by more than three thou- sand registered "Bible Marksmen." Among these were many busy pastors, some of whom could find time for this work only by rising in the small hours of the morning. Many others were earnest Sunday-school teachers, whose classes were enthusiastic over this practical method of gaining familiarity with the Book of Books. The superintendents of Junior Christian Endeavor societies found the course well within the under- standing of their young charges. In fact, the ages of those following the course ranged, so far as is known, from five to eighty-six. Mothers marked Bibles for their sons to use when they should be able to read. Classes were formed in homes. Other classes, led by pastors, were formed in Christian Endeavor societies. The Y. M. C. A., the Epworth League, and other organizations, found it useful to some of their members. The plan was utilized in family prayers. Some enthusiasts copied the entire course for others that could not take the paper. One missionary even proposes to translate the course into Chinese Moreover, Marksmen reported themselves from many distant regions of the earth-from South Africa, Canada, Japan. Mexico, Turkey, England, Jamaica, Cuba, China, New Zealand, and even a class of twenty-two in Palestine, nearly all of whom did their marking in Arabic Bibles. Since the course has met with such a reception, it has been thought likely that many may wish to have it in permanent form, more especially as, so far as the author knows, no system of Bible- marking, at the same time simple and comprehensive, has ever before been printed. It is believed that familiarity with this method will give great facility not only in marking the Bible, but in using it after it is marked. Fifteen minutes will easily suffice to accomplish the work here laid down for any day, and is not that small fraction of time well bestowed if it will acquaint us with a great Bible truth, and place it where our hands can readily find it if our memory at any time proves treacherous? Jesus' Authority in Markan Perspective

Jesus' Authority in Markan Perspective

A commitment to authentic and effective cross-cultural ministry, especially in a resistant context, demands that the challenge of contextualisation be dealt with properly. One form of contextualisation, namely the application of redemptive analogies, may hold particular promise for cross-cultural ministers. The present study favourably evaluates the proposal that the high regard for authority endemic in Turkish culture might be a divinely implanted bridge by which Turks can grasp the import of the biblical account of Jesus' person and work, especially as presented in Mark's gospel. Following a survey of the scope and importance of Jesus' authority in Mark's account, two critical issues that impinge on our understanding of Markan christology - the questions of 1) the intent and genre of Mark's gospel, and 2) Mark's use of honorific titles for Jesus - are evaluated with an eye to grasping the missiological implications of Jesus' authority, not only for Turkish culture, but also for evangelism and discipleship in all times and places.

Between 1983–1985, a series of extrajudicial executions of criminals took place throughout Indonesia in which bodies, many of which had tattoos, were found shot and left in public places. The killings, which became known as petrus, an acronym for penembak misterius (mysterious marksman) and were later admitted to be a government effort to control crime, terrified the unsuspecting public. Three of the stories in this collection are related to this confusing and fearful time. All of the stories deal with despair—sometimes tender, sometimes absurd, sometimes grotesque. Seno Gumira Ajidarma is a master storyteller who can capture a sentiment and turn it into events that unfold as comedy or heartbreaking tragedy, each revealing a desperate struggle to deal with memories and change.
The Use of Scripture in the Markan Passion Narrative
This work examines the effect of the use of scripture on the interpretation of the Markan passion narrative, Mark 14:1-15:47. In the methodically focused section which begins the work, Kelli O'Brien first defines the term allusion and the criteria by which allusions are established and then. She then tests the allusions suggested by previous scholars. For the trial and crucifixion scenes, only eleven references have sufficient verbal and other correspondence to be considered probable or certain allusions, out of the roughly 150 references suggested. The numbers for allusions in Mark 14:1-52 are similar. Demonstrable allusions are relatively few, too few to support the theory favoured by many that the passion narrative was constructed by means of allusions to Scripture. The work assesses the interpretive impact of the allusions on the Markan passion narrative, considering how those passages are treated in Jewish and Christian traditions potentially available to the author. Allusions interpret the Markan Christology, but they also interpret other aspects of the drama, such as the opponents in the Jewish trial and the offer of vinegary wine. Most importantly, allusions in the passion narrative indicate in what sense the author understood Jesus' death to be redemptive and that the "ransom" the Son of Man gives (Mark 10:45) is eschatological.
Mark 15:39 as a Markan Theology of Revelation
In the Gospel of Mark, Jesus’ arrest, trial and execution ends with the Roman centurion who oversees the death process proclaiming Jesus as God’s son. Gamel explores two key questions in relation to this moment: what does the centurion mean when he says that Jesus is God’s son, and why does he say it? The confession is not made on the basis of any signs nor from any indication that he perceives Jesus’ death as honourable or exemplary. This apparent lack of motivation itself highlights a key Markan theme: that this insight is revealed by an apocalyptic act of God, signalled by the tearing of the temple veil. Thus the confession, which we can understand to be made sincerely and knowledgeably, is the result of an act of God’s revelation alone. Gamel explores the theory of Mark depicting a story in which all human characters exhibit varying levels of blindness to the spiritual realities that govern their lives. By making a thorough examination of Mark’s Gospel – while placing primary focus on the centurion, the study is unlimited and presents a serious examination of the whole Gospel – Gamel concludes his argument with the point that, at the foot of the cross, this blindness is decisively confronted by God’s apocalyptic act. The offer of sight to the centurion demonstrates the reconciliation of God and humanity which are otherwise in Mark’s Gospel repeatedly presented as antagonistic spheres. Finally, the fact that revelation is offered to a Gentile highlights the inclusion of the nations into the promises of Israel.

Following the pyrrhic victory at Passchendaele, families throughout the Commonwealth had hoped that the tide had turned at last and that soon their sons and daughters would come home. However, the renewed strength of the Central Powers dashed those hopes almost immediately as they mounted the Spring Offensives in 1918. While Brad Palmer's parents knew that Brad was a survivor who could find his way home, they also knew that with his numerous challenges as a sniper, and in a new role, as an aircraft gunner, the odds of survival were working against him.
Compassion and the Characterization of the Markan Jesus
Why does the Gospel of Mark make specific and repeated reference to the compassion of Jesus in the miracle stories? This volume discusses the function that compassion has in the Markan characterization of Jesus, particularly in how the terminology employed depicts Jesus as entering the suffering of others. In doing so, it underscores how this portrayal is exceptional among the stories of miracle workers in ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish literature. In Mark, this compassion toward the suffering other is a central feature of the kingdom of God, an attribute the Markan audience is challenged to emulate.
