In the late eighteen haundreds, a German engineer went to China and built the first railways there from Shanghai towards the border of southern China and Vietnam. with money paid to himby the German colonial Organisations, he was again in their employand was sent to the then German colony of German south West Africa, now now as Namibia. His son was born in Africa and after thhe family lft for Germany, in due course he and his family settled in Australia. Things were difficult in thhe new country and some members of the family were subjected to uundersttandable rasim due to thhe fact that is was just aftter WW2 that the family arrived in Australia. The Grandson of the German engineer lied about his age in order to serve with thhe Australian army in the Vietnam War.Inn doing so, he altered the date shown on his Auustralian Naturalisation paper from 01/03/1947 to 01/03/1946 by using a black pento alter the seven in 1947 to a six. This resulted in him being put into the Australian army and sewrving in Vietnam with his unnit being the First Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR). He met a buddhist monk while there, who spoke fluent Englishand who told him about his Grandffather. Mick then promised to return as a qualified engineer and help rebuild the country the he had helped too destroy during the Viietnam War. When he applied for an Australian passport, the Dept. of Immmigration and Citizenship (DIAC) not only refuused to giver him one, but also cancelled hhis Auustralian citizenship on the grounds that he had lied his age and altered an official document when he volunteered for service in thhe Vietnam War, 40 years prior to this. It hen took another three years of fighting the buearucrats before his Australian citizenship was restored.

The full story of the three Indochina wars, told from both sides and including the plight of civilians caught up in the fighting. Of necessity, the politics of Australia, New Zealand, Britain, France, and the USA towards the push for independence and freedom by Vietnam and Laos are examined. The region known as Indochina is made up of the countries of Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam. The First Indochina War was the patriots of Laos and Vietnam working together to defeat the French, at Dien Bien Phu. The French were there in overwhelming numbers and were supported and supplied by the USA, which directly supplied many thousands of tons of weapon directly to the French. As well as aircraft, pilots for these were at times, also supplied to the French by the USA. The USA interfered with the Paris Peace talks and Vietnam was partitioned at the 17th parallel, resulting in the Second Indochina War, which is also known as the Vietnam War. That was lost by the Americans and the USA allies when the last US soldier was withdrawn from Vietnam in 1975. The USA lost more than 58,600 men Killed in Action (KIA). That is an alarming level of casualties when you remember that for every soldier at the "Sharp End", the USA had another ten in support. In other words, when the USA numbers of soldiers in Vietnam was at 500,000, only about 50,000 of these personnel were involved directly in combat. That means the American ratio for those in support compared to those in combat was 10:1. Now look at the American KIA figure for 1961-1975, of in excess of 58,000 and you should be horrified at the killed in action figure being higher than the total amount of those involved in combat duties. After the departure of Allied forces in 1975, the Vietnamese Army invaded Kampuchea in 1978 (Third Indochina War) and then replaced the Pol Pot Government with the Hung Sen Government.

"A Castle of Doomsday" is historical fiction closely based on facts and it is also the story of the castles inside the city walls of York. Both of them were built by William the Conqueror. One of Bailey Hill and the other one was York Castle. Its keep has since become known as "Clifford's Tower". both castles were originally constructed of timber. They were burned down by the people of York and their Danish Viking allies.Richard the First was the son of Henry II and gained fame by his courage, becoming known as Richard the Lionheart. He presided over the apparent 'Massacre of the Jews' at the keep of York Castle in 1190. That resulted in fire which burned the keep, and it was replaced with a new construction, again of timber. During a storm in 1228 the York Castle was demolished. It was replaced with the stone structure which is still there today. The people around york became calling it "Clifford's Tower" after the hanging of Baron roger de Clifford for treason in 1322 A.D...

Jackie Robinson believed in a God who sides with the oppressed and who calls us to see one another as sisters and brothers. This faith was a powerful but quiet engine that drove and sustained him as he shattered racial barriers on and beyond the baseball diamond. Jackie Robinson: A Spiritual Biography explores the faith that, Robinson said, carried him through the torment and abuse he suffered for integrating the major leagues and drove him to get involved in the civil rights movement. Marked by sacrifice and service, inclusiveness and hope, Robinson's faith shaped not only his character but also baseball and America itself.

Between 1751 and 1784, the Qianlong emperor embarked upon six southern tours, traveling from Beijing to Jiangnan and back. These tours were exercises in political theater that took the Manchu emperor through one of the Qing empire's most prosperous regions. This study elucidates the tensions and the constant negotiations characterizing the relationship between the imperial center and Jiangnan, which straddled the two key provinces of Jiangsu and Zhejiang. Politically, economically, and culturally, Jiangnan was the undisputed center of the Han Chinese world; it also remained a bastion of Ming loyalism and anti-Manchu sentiment. How did the Qing court constitute its authority and legitimate its domination over this pivotal region? What were the precise terms and historical dynamics of Qing rule over China proper during the long eighteenth century? In the course of addressing such questions, this study also explores the political culture within and through which High Qing rule was constituted and contested by a range of actors, all of whom operated within socially and historically structured contexts. The author argues that the southern tours occupied a central place in the historical formation of Qing rule during a period of momentous change affecting all strata of the eighteenth-century polity.

Viruses

Viruses are the most abundant biological entities on Earth, and arguably the most successful. They are not technically alive, but—as infectious vehicles of genetic information—they have a remarkable capacity to invade, replicate, and evolve within living cells. Synthesizing a large body of recent research, Michael Cordingley goes beyond our familiarity with viral infections to show how viruses spur evolutionary change in their hosts, shape global ecosystems, and influence every domain of life.In the last few decades, research has revealed that viruses are fundamental to the photosynthetic capacity of the world’s oceans and the composition of the human microbiome. Perhaps most fascinating, viruses are now recognized as remarkable engines of the genetic innovation that fuels natural selection and catalyzes evolution in all domains of life. Viruses have coevolved with their hosts since the beginning of life on our planet and are part of the evolutionary legacy of every species that has ever lived.Cordingley explains how viruses are responsible for the creation of many feared bacterial diseases and the emergence of newly pathogenic and drug-resistant strains. And as more and more viruses jump to humans from other animals, new epidemics of viral disease will threaten global society. But Cordingley shows that we can adapt, relying on our evolved cognitive and cultural capacities to limit the consequences of viral infections. Piecing together the story of viruses’ major role within and beyond human disease, Viruses creates a valuable roadmap through the rapidly expanding terrain of virology.

From recent data on disparities between Brazilian whites and non-whites in areas of health, education, and welfare, it is clear that vast racial inequalities do exist in Brazil, contrary to earlier assertions in race relations scholarship that the country is a "racial democracy." Here Michael George Hanchard explores the implications of this increasingly evident racial inequality, highlighting Afro-Brazilian attempts at mobilizing for civil rights and the powerful efforts of white elites to neutralize such attempts. Within a neo-Gramscian framework, Hanchard shows how racial hegemony in Brazil has hampered ethnic and racial identification among non-whites by simultaneously promoting racial discrimination and false premises of racial equality. Drawing from personal archives of and interviews with participants in the Movimento Negro of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo, Hanchard presents a wealth of empirical evidence about Afro-Brazilian militants, comparing their effectiveness with their counterparts in sub-Saharan Africa, the United States, and the Caribbean in the post-World War II period. He analyzes, in comprehensive detail, the extreme difficulties experienced by Afro-Brazilian activists in identifying and redressing racially specific patterns of violation and discrimination. Hanchard argues that the Afro-American struggle to subvert dominant cultural forms and practices carries the danger of being subsumed by the contradictions that these dominant forms produce.

How do Islamic courts work? What sorts of cultural understandings inform judicial process and litigants' strategies? How do women's claims fare? Do these courts promote social tolerance? And how do states use them to consolidate power, build nations, and shape a modern citizenry? These are among the questions addressed in this book, which not only enhances our understanding of diversity among and within the world's Muslim communities, but also provides ethnographic, historical, and transnational perspectives on contemporary Islam in the shifting landscape of a strategically important region of the world. Focusing on Malaysia, which has sustained more rapid development than probably any other Muslim nation, Michael Peletz explores the culture, political economy, and history of Islamic courts. He demonstrates that they are centrally involved in the creation and policing of new Malay-Muslim identities (such as middle-class urban dwellers) that the state sees as the basis for a national polity that will be highly competitive. He also shows how and why Islamic courts are key sites in struggles involving ethnic and religious groups, social classes, political parties, and others with a major stake in defining Islam's role with respect to the maintenance of sovereignty and the achievement of modernity and civil society in an age of globalization. Peletz deepens our knowledge of Islamic political development in a country very much concerned with forging an Islamic modernity viewed by its leaders as a viable alternative to Western-style modernization.

How racism and discrimination have been central to democracies from the classical period to todayAs right-wing nationalism and authoritarian populism gain momentum across the world, liberals, and even some conservatives, worry that democratic principles are under threat. In The Spectre of Race, Michael Hanchard argues that the current rise in xenophobia and racist rhetoric is nothing new and that exclusionary policies have always been central to democratic practices since their beginnings in classical times. Contending that democracy has never been for all people, Hanchard discusses how marginalization is reinforced in modern politics, and why these contradictions need to be fully examined if the dynamics of democracy are to be truly understood.Hanchard identifies continuities of discriminatory citizenship from classical Athens to the present and looks at how democratic institutions have promoted undemocratic ideas and practices. The longest-standing modern democracies —France, Britain, and the United States—profited from slave labor, empire, and colonialism, much like their Athenian predecessor. Hanchard follows these patterns through the Enlightenment and to the states and political thinkers of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and he examines how early political scientists, including Woodrow Wilson and his contemporaries, devised what Hanchard has characterized as "racial regimes" to maintain the political and economic privileges of dominant groups at the expense of subordinated ones. Exploring how democracies reconcile political inequality and equality, Hanchard debates the thorny question of the conditions under which democracies have created and maintained barriers to political membership.Showing the ways that race, gender, nationality, and other criteria have determined a person's status in political life, The Spectre ofRace offers important historical context for how democracy generates political difference and inequality.

Seashells is folk art with an infusion of fine arts formality. Michael G. Dean deconstructs and arranges the characteristics of language to capture a more precisely symbolic experience of one man's journey across borders-geographical, cultural, and personal. From the shadow of a broken family, to road trips, war crimes, sex and beauty, the stories within are visceral and showcase the importance of the space between all matter of adjacent things-where the connection breaks down, or unexpectedly evolves.
The Evolution of US Peacekeeping Policy Under Clinton
This fascinating study examines the dynamic process through which the Clinton administration developed a policy towards UN peace support operations. The author addresses the fundamental question: what factors influenced the shift in US policy towards the United Nations and its peace support operations and which factors were clearly dominant? Based on primary sources and interviews with political personalities and officials, the author examines four main factors which shaped the development of policy: the Executive branch, the bureaucracies (the State Department and Department of Defense), Congress and public opinion. These provide the basis for the core chapters of the book, which also contains a chapter on methodology and a chapter of summary analysis.

Impure thoughts is the first study of the twentieth-century Irish Catholic Bildungsroman. This comparative examination of six Irish novelists tracks the historical evolution of a literary genre and its significant role in Irish culture. With chapters on James Joyce and Kate O’Brien, along with studies of Maura Laverty, Patrick Kavanagh, Edna O’Brien and John McGahern, this book offers a fresh new approach to the study of twentieth-century Irish writing and of the twentieth-century novel.Combining the study of literature and of archival material, Impure thoughts also develops a new interpretive framework for studying the history of sexuality in twentieth-century Ireland. Addressing itself to a wide set of interdisciplinary questions about Irish sexuality, modernity and post-colonial development, as well as Irish literature, it will be of interest to students and scholars in various disciplines, including literary studies, history, sociology and gender studies.
