Treated with disdain by her family her entire life for not living up to their expectations-or prophesy-Arabella Leyden forges her own path and attains her greatest wish: to join the Sisterhood of Witches, doing so in a manner no one ever anticipated. As the first-ever technomancer, the way before her is fraught with peril. Can she survive the machinations of her order, or be ground between the gears of reluctant progress? More important yet, can she succeed at her first assignment: find the root cause of the famine sweeping through Ireland? A task that has already claimed two witches of the Sortilege line. Her future hangs in the balance... perhaps even her very life...

What does memory mean for learning in an age of smartphones and search engines?Human minds are made of memories, and today those memories have competition. Biological memory capacities are being supplanted, or at least supplemented, by digital ones, as we rely on recording—phone cameras, digital video, speech-to-text—to capture information we'll need in the future and then rely on those stored recordings to know what happened in the past. Search engines have taken over not only traditional reference materials but also the knowledge base that used to be encoded in our own brains. Google remembers, so we don't have to. And when we don't have to, we no longer can. Or can we?Remembering and Forgetting in the Age of Technology offers concise, nontechnical explanations of major principles of memory and attention—concepts that all teachers should know and that can inform how technology is used in their classes. Teachers will come away with a new appreciation of the importance of memory for learning, useful ideas for handling and discussing technology with their students, and an understanding of how memory is changing in our technology-saturated world.

To prepare for challenges it could face in future decades, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) operates a strategic foresight initiative, Project Evergreen. Researchers designed an analytic game, Paratus Futurum, for the initiative in which players assess demand for USCG missions and the service's capacity to execute them in 2040 and beyond. This report documents the researchers' findings and recommendations for coming iterations of Paratus Futurum.

Winner of the 2023 Memoir Prize for Books from Memoir Magazine and the Christopher Award A "contemplative, emotional, and spiritual" (Shondaland) memoir about how resilience, hope, and defiant faith can lead to powerful transformation even amid our darkest hours. Media executive Michelle D. Hord has suffered loss at almost every major phase in her life--the most devastating being the murder of her beloved daughter at the hands of her ex-husband. Yet through it all, there was a voice inside her insisting that she must let the light shine through the holes in her heart. A timeless and accessible book for anyone who has experienced grief or loss, "The Other Side of Yet will guide you to find the light" (Robin Roberts, Good Morning America). With evocative prose and spiritual insight, Hord offers "inspiration and a road map to help us get to the other side" (Barbara Corcoran, founder of The Corcoran Group and star of Shark Tank) of unimaginable pain. Finding strength in God and her faith, she shares how, while we can't control the pain or trauma that alters life as we knew it before, we can always pivot to a yet and rebuild a new after. In this deeply vulnerable tribute to her daughter, Hord provides a guide for "the radical healing after loss that must occur as we seek to recover from unimaginable trials and tribulations" (Essence). The Other Side of Yet is about creating a life of purpose, passion, and possibility regardless of what is thrown at us and highlights how we can face our hardships, yet also choose to keep fighting.
Johnathon Morgan wanted to make partner at his law firm. That's it. That's all he wanted. Everything else he could figure out later, including life with his girlfriend, Rebecca. The last thing he needed was a distraction. But sometimes life has plans for you that are outside of your control. He starts to read a book and expresses all of his thoughts out loud as he reads. To his surprise, the characters in the book can not only hear his spoken thoughts, but can also respond to him. Soon he finds himself completely lost in their world, learning more about himself and what really matters than he ever thought he would.

Using a wide range of archival material and a microhistorical approach, Plagues of the heart explores the formation, practice and performance of protestant identity amid the interlocking crises of the seventeenth century. Taking the southwestern port city of Ayr as a remarkable but revealing case study, this book argues that under the stewardship of a generation of radical clergy, Scotland developed a distinct and durable ‘culture of covenanting’. This culture was created not simply by swearing the National Covenant of 1638 and the Solemn League and Covenant of 1643, but through reimagining the post-Reformation program of discipline and worship around hard-line interpretations of those covenants. This compelling story of one Scottish town and its long-serving minister offers a fresh understanding of how protestant communities across the early modern world grappled with religion and identity during a remarkably tumultuous age.

We All Need the Same PlaybookDiversity Playbook offers readers a unique opportunity to gain a sneak peek into the world of the other. Authors Michelle R Loyd-Paige and Michelle D. Their work will help your organization become better at changing hearts and broadening minds.
As a culture, we are increasingly failing to respect young boyhood, pathologising normal boy behaviour and foisting burdensome and stigmatising diagnoses of ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, bipolar disorder, and more on boys as young as three years old. The result, as Dr. Anthony Rao passionately argues in "The Way of Boys", is nothing less than a crisis in boyhood, with ever-increasing numbers of boys being treated and medicated for problems they simply don't have. In this practical and accessible guide to the distinct challenges of raising young boys into good men, Dr. Rao urges parents, educators, pediatricians, psychologists, and other developmental experts to reevaluate and radically alter how we deal with our youngest boys. He teaches parents how to rear their sons with respect for their natural development right from the start, which gives them the best shot at growing into confident and healthy men ready to make their unique contributions to the world.

An eye-opening handbook from a leading Ayurvedic physician that blends cutting-edge science on "clock genes" with ancient eastern wisdom to help us understand how to harness the power of chronobiology to effortlessly lose weight, sleep better, exercise stronger, reduce stress, and boost our wellbeing."It’s not you, it’s your schedule." Does it sound like magic? It’s not. We’ve all heard of circadian rhythms—those biological processes that give us jet lag and make us night owls or early birds. But few of us know just how profoundly these diurnal patterns affect our overall health.Bad habits like skipping meals, squeezing in workouts when it’s convenient, working late into the night to maximize productivity and then trying to "catch up" on sleep during the weekend disrupt our natural cycles. A growing body of research on chronobiology reveals just how sensitive the human body is to these rhythms all the way down to the genetic level. Our "clock genes" control more than we realize, and small changes can make the difference between battling our bodies, and effortlessly managing weight, sleep, stress, inflammation, and more.Marrying ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with the latest scientific research, Dr. Suhas Kshirsagar’s holistic step-by-step 30-day plan gives you the tools—and the schedule—you need to transform your life. With diagnostic quizzes to determine your specific mind-body type, you will learn to adapt you schedule for effortless wellness for life.

CO-PUBLISHED BY ROUTLEDGE AND THE NATIONAL COUNCIL OF TEACHERS OF ENGLISHGrammar to Get Things Done offers a fresh lens on grammar and grammar instruction, designed for middle and secondary pre-service and in-service English teachers. It shows how form, function, and use can help teachers move away from decontextualized grammar instruction (such as worksheets and exercises emphasizing rule-following and memorizing conventional definitions) and begin considering grammar in applied contexts of everyday use. Modules (organized by units) succinctly explain common grammatical concepts. These modules help English teachers gain confidence in their own understanding while positioning grammar instruction as an opportunity to discuss, analyze, and produce language for real purposes in the world. An important feature of the text is attention to both the history of and current attitudes about grammar through a sociocultural lens, with ideas for teachers to bring discussions of language-as-power into their own classrooms.
