Morgan defied conventions, survived economic hardships, resisted take-over bids and carried on in its inimitable way, hand-crafting ‘proper’ cars out of the historic row of workshops in the spa town of Malvern. Morgan – An English Enigma takes an in-depth look at the Morgan Motor Company during the Vintage and Classic periods, benefitting from access to previously unseen documents and drawings, and featuring 500 images, over half of which have never before been published. NATIONAL BESTSELLER - A NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW EDITORS' CHOICE - The definitive portrait of the Gilded Age icon J. Pierpont Morgan, presenting his tumultuous life both in and out of the public eye, from the award-winning author of Alice James and Family Romance "Magnificent . . . the fullest and most revealing look at this remarkable, complex man that we are likely to get."--The Wall Street Journal "It is hard to imagine a biographer coming any closer to perfection."--St. Louis Post-Dispatch History has remembered him as a complex and contradictory figure, part robber baron and part patron saint. J. Pierpont Morgan earned his reputation as "the Napoleon of Wall Street" by reorganizing the nation's railroads and creating industrial giants such as General Electric and U.S. Steel. At a time when the country had no Federal Reserve system, he appointed himself a one-man central bank. He had two wives, three yachts, four children, six houses, mistresses, and one of the finest art collections in America. In this extraordinary book, award-winning biographer Jean Strouse vividly portrays the financial colossus, the avid patron of the arts, and the entirely human character behind all the myths.

From 1915 to 1971 the large U.S. Steel plant was a major part of Duluth’s landscape and life. Just as important was Morgan Park—an innovatively planned and close-knit community constructed for the plant’s employees and their families. In this new book Arnold R. Alanen brings to life Morgan Park, the formerly company-controlled town that now stands as a city neighborhood, and the U.S. Steel plant for which it was built. Planned by renowned landscape architects, architects, and engineers, and provided with schools, churches, and recreational and medical services by U.S. Steel, Morgan Park is an iconic example—like Lowell, Massachusetts, and Pullman, Illinois—of a twentieth-century company town, as well as a window into northeastern Minnesota’s industrial roots. Starting with the intense political debates that preceded U.S. Steel’s decision to build a plant in Duluth, Morgan Park follows the town and its residents through the boom years to the closing of the outmoded facility—an event that foreshadowed industrial shutdowns elsewhere in the United States—and up to today, as current residents work to preserve the community’s historic character. Through compelling archival and contemporary photographs and vibrant stories of a community built of concrete and strong as steel, Alanen shows the impact both the plant and Morgan Park have had on life in Duluth. Arnold R. Alanen is professor of landscape architecture at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His previous books include Main Street Ready-Made: The New Deal Community of Greendale, Wisconsin and Preserving Cultural Landscapes in America.

Morgan Library Ghost Stories

Morgan Library Ghost Stories

The patron saint - if that's the right word; perhaps guiding spirit? - behind these witty and literate ghost stories is M.R. James (1862-1936). He is primarily known as The Pierpont Morgan Library and at similar august homes of learning as a redoubtable scholar and bibliographer. To many more devotees around the world, though, he is generally acclaimed as the author of some of the most economical, clearly focused, concise, and elegant ghost stories every written. Only the English language serves this genre so well, and James's English craft is at the top of anyone's short list of favorites. "Monty" James enjoyed a long and happy professional relationship with the Morgan Library. He did so, in a sense, only in spirit: he never crossed the Atlantic, and he feared that he would not survive crossing New York's streets. His name was much in evidence when the 150th anniversary of Pierpont Morgan's birth was celebrated several years ago. His work on medieval manuscripts was the focal point of an exhibition held in 1987, and that exhibition gave birth to a strange offspring - a contest for ghost stories connected in some way with the Morgan Library and written in a Jamesian style. This book contains the seven winning stories. Will they make you pleasantly uneasy late at night? Will they make your scalp prickle disturbingly? You'll just have to read them to find out, won't you?
