Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry

The prevalence of psychiatry in popular culture has coincided with the rise of amateur “armchair” psychiatrists—and this often serves to muddy the waters about what, exactly, the field entails. For all the misconceptions, though, psychiatry is an endlessly fascinating field, charged with defining and recognizing mental illnesses, identifying methods for treating them, and discovering their causes and developing measures to prevent them. The Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry dispels common misunderstandings and delves into what makes this such an exciting discipline. Now in its seventh edition, this bestselling guide is organized along the lines of DSM-5® and has been updated to reflect changes to the manual, including new medications and therapies.Rigorous in scope, Introductory Textbook of Psychiatry is nevertheless accessible and conversational in tone. It employs fascinating case vignettes, clinical pearls, self-assessment questions, and tables and figures as it offers a summary of:The DSM-5® diagnostic systemThe neurobiological basis of psychiatryInterviewing and assessment—including specific questions that patients can be askedThe various psychiatric disordersLegal issuesPsychiatric emergenciesTreatmentInitially developed for medical students and beginning residents, this guide is also a valuable reference for nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, and psychologists. And because it has been edited to align with the Pocket Guide to Psychiatric Practice, it makes an excellent companion piece to that volume, as well.

Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131

Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 131

Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp minor Op. 131 (1826) is not only firmly a part of the scholarly canon, the performing canon, and the pedagogical canon, but also makes its presence felt in popular culture. Yet in recent times, the terms in which the C-sharp minor quartet is discussed and presented tend to undermine the multivalent nature of the work. Although it is held up as a masterpiece, Op. 131 has often been understood in monochrome terms as a work portraying tragedy, struggle, and loss. In Beethoven's String Quartet in C-sharp Minor, Op. 13, author Nancy November takes the modern-day listener well beyond these categories of adversity or deficit. The book goes back to early reception documents, including Beethoven's own writings about the work, to help the listener reinterpret and re-hear it. This book reveals the diverse musical ideas present in Op. 131 and places the work in the context of an emerging ideology of silent or 'serious' listening in Beethoven's Europe. It considers how this particular 'late' quartet could speak with special eloquence to a highly select but passionately enthusiastic audience and examines how and why the reception of Op. 131 has changed so profoundly from Beethoven's time to our own.

M.A.G.I.C.(TM) at Work: 5 Forces for Powerful Organizations Exercise the M.A.G.I.C. that Builds Great Companies Alchemy is often defined as "the art of transformation," so Dr. Noble brings us her own model for helping leaders make positive change in their organizations with what she calls "Organizational Alchemy". Beginning with a discussion of some of the key elements and principles of the ancient alchemical craft, she offers a new twist on the theories and practices of what many know as Organization Development, Organizational Effectiveness, or Organization Design and Change. Written with business leaders and HR professionals in mind, and with a personal, informal style, the author uses the acronym M.A.G.I.C. to outline the 5 forces she believes most critical in truly powerful organizations. M - Master Conversations for Top Performance. A - Align Goals, Roles and Teams G - Grow Talent and Leaders I - Ignite Active Engagement C - Change Readily, well T.I.M.E.D. Along with a little history and theory behind these forces, you will find practical methods, tools and tips for practicing them. Additionally, Dr. Noble shares her own developmental journey and offers advice regarding the characteristics and mindset required to be a true "Organizational Alchemist" who can effectively facilitate this magic. There is also an assessment to help you see the strengths and weaknesses driving the M.A.G.I.C. in your own business or organization. Nancy Noble, PhD is the Owner/Principal of two related consultancies: Power Partners, LLC, focused on business and sales training topics; and Noble Alignments, focused on organizational consulting projects customized to the specific needs of her clients. Jean-Luc Nancy and the Future of Philosophy

Jean-Luc Nancy and the Future of Philosophy

B.C. Hutchens

The work of the contemporary French philosopher Jean-Luc Nancy has impacted across a range of disciplines. His writings on psychoanalysis, theology, art, culture and, of course, philosophy are now widely translated and much discussed. His L'Experience de la Liberte (1988) is considered to be one of the landmarks of contemporary continental philosophy. Jean-Luc Nancy and the Future of Philosophy is the first genuine introduction to Nancy's ideas and a clear and succinct appraisal of a burgeoning reputation. The book summarises topically the primary conceptual areas of Nancy's thought and explores its relevance for contemporary issues like nationalism, racism and media rights. Nancy's indebtedness to Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Bataille is examined as well as how his ideas compare to those of his contemporary continental thinkers. Three major areas of Nancy's work are emphasised: freedom and morality; community and politics; and arts and the media. The reader is guided through a chosen theme without being lost in a welter of allusive language, jargon is avoided where possible and when unavoidable it is clearly explained. The book concludes with a new interview with Nancy, which discusses the future of philosophy. The book will be an important addition to the readings lists for courses on contemporary continental thought and political philosophy.
