While there are plenty of land law textbooks on the market, there is, in general, an absence of critical texts designed for law students to deepen their understanding of the subject. Great Debates in Land Law provides students with the contextual and critical aspects of this exciting topic. Each chapter introduces topics for debate such as “Is tenancy a property or a personal right?” and goes on to include features such as boxed discursive notes from the authors, important cases and suggestions for further reading. The Great Debates series provides engaging and accessible analysis of the more advanced legal concepts. For books in the major taught subjects, such as land law, the series is designed for use by ambitious students alongside a main course textbook. For books addressing subjects that are less often taught (such as family law), the series provides a clear and critical exposition of the key areas of debate. By focussing on particular questions and tensions underlying a subject, Great Debates titles encourage students to think critically, analyse a topic and gain additional insights. These skills and the discursive nature of the series, with an emphasis on contentious topics, are also useful for students when preparing their dissertations.

With the continued advance of computing power and accessibility, the view that "real mathematicians don't compute" no longer has any traction for a newer generation of mathematicians. The goal in this book is to present a coherent variety of accessible examples of modern mathematics where intelligent computing plays a significant role and in so doing to highlight some of the key algorithms and to teach some of the key experimental approaches.

You can't kill the dead! Like any good monster, the zombie has proven to be ever-evolving, monumentally mutable, and open to seemingly endless imaginative interpretations: the thralls of voodoo sorcerers, George Romero's living dead, societal symbols, dancing thrillers, viral victims, reanimated ramblers, video gaming targets, post-apocalyptic permutations, shuffling sidekicks, literary mash-ups, the comedic, and, yes, even the romantic. Evidently, we have an enduring hunger for this infinite onslaught of the ever-hungry dead. Hoards of readers are now devouring zombie fiction faster than armies of the undead could chow down their brains. It's a sick job, but somebody had to do it: explore the innumerable necrotic nightmares of the latest, greatest, most fervent devotion in the history of humankind and ferret out the best of new millenial zombie stories: Zombies: The Recent Dead.

Whisky is the world’s favourite spirit and is enjoying booming sales, yet too often it’s shrouded in mystery, myth and complex-sounding terminology. This authoritative book, written by three world experts, gives simple advice on how to seek out and enjoy the immense diversity of flavours and styles on offer, and how to become more adventurous. As with any subject, the more you know, the more you can appreciate and enjoy it. This book aims to equip you with enough knowledge to be able to find your way around the whisky sections of a specialist drinks retailer and to help you feel confident choosing whisky in a bar or restaurant. We aim to demystify whisky without taking away the magic. The history of whisky and production methods are clearly explained, and there is advice on how to nose, taste and savour, as well as a selection of classic whisky cocktails and advice on matching food and whisky. The book covers not just famous Highland malts, Irish pot still whiskeys and American bourbons, but also whiskies from Japan, Canada, Australia and India.

Florida's Miami-Dade and Broward counties are vulnerable to flooding and intrusion of saltwater into drinking water wells as a consequence of sea level rise, changes in precipitation, and the distribution of future asset growth across the region. The authors developed an integrated groundwater and economic model and decision support tool to help regional planners and decisionmakers focus mitigation actions on the most vulnerable areas.

Among the significant trends in human services during the 1980s has been the emergence of emphasis on social networks and social supports in research, prevention, and treatment efforts. Today's human service professionals and planners routinely incorporate information about social networks and social supports into assessments and interventions for a wide range of individual and community problems. Social Support Networks is the most comprehensive, up-to-date bibliography yet published on the theory, research, and practical application of social support networks. Containing approximately 2,700 references, it offers detailed listings for journal articles, books, book chapters, and published reports which appeared from 1983 to 1987.In recent years, social support networks have become a focus for research and scholarship in anthropology, epidemiology, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, public health, social work, and sociology. The literature represented in this bibliography includes a focus on theory, research, practice, and policy drawn from these as well as other disciplines. As such, the volume lends itself to the transfer of ideas and practice across various branches of the social support intervention field, particularly addressing the requirements of practitioners who may feel they have become limited in their response to social problems by relying on their agencies' traditional ways of meeting client needs. The bibliography is divided into five major headings: Overview and Theory, Research-Physical Health, Research-Mental Health, Intervention, and Professional Roles and Policy, and all entries are consecutively numbered to aid cross-referencing by the Author and Subject Indexes. To further facilitate cross-referencing, many Subject Index terms also have sub-indices. This important reference tool will be welcomed by service providers and planners in gerontology, nursing, psychiatry, psychology, public health, social work, sociology, anthropology, and urban affairs.

Lizards and snakes (squamate reptiles) are the most diverse vertebrate group in Australia, with approximately 1000 described species, representing about 10% of the global squamate diversity. Squamates are a vital part of the Australian ecosystem, but their conservation has been hindered by a lack of knowledge of their diversity, distribution, biology and key threats. The Action Plan for Australian Lizards and Snakes 2017 provides the first comprehensive assessment of the conservation status of Australian squamates in 25 years. Conservation assessments are provided for 986 species of Australian lizards and snakes (including sea snakes). Over the past 25 years there has been a substantial increase in the number of species and families recognised within Australia. There has also been an increase in the range and magnitude of threatening processes with the potential to impact squamates. This has resulted in an increase in the proportion of the Australian squamate fauna that is considered Threatened. Notably over this period, the first known extinction (post-European settlement) of an Australian reptile species occurred – an indication of the increasingly urgent need for better knowledge and management of this fauna. Six key recommendations are presented to improve the conservation management and plight of Australian squamates. This Action Plan represents an essential resource for research scientists, conservation biologists, conservation managers, environmental consultants, policy makers from Commonwealth and State/Territory governments, and the herpetological community. FEATURES First assessment of the conservation status of the Australian squamate fauna in 25 years. Complete assessment of the 986 Australian squamate reptile species recognised as at 2017. Analysis of the changes in conservation status of the squamate fauna over the past 25 years. Draft conservation assessments for the species described between the 2017 workshops and the 31st August 2018. Development of six key recommendations to improve the conservation management of Australian squamates.

Crime and Criminology in South Africa provides a comprehensive analysis of criminological theory, the criminal justice system and prevalent forms of criminality (namely gender-based violence, racially motivated and xenophobic crime, property crime, organised crime and corporate crime) in South Africa. In addition the book aims to contribute to the revival of theoretical criminology, which currently receives little systematic attention in South Africa. The book is split into three parts: Part One contains an analysis of criminological theory; Part Two examines specific forms of criminality that are prevalent in South Africa; and Part Three evaluates criminal justice agencies and processes, as well as the position of victims in the criminal justice system. It also includes chapters on restorative justice processes and crime prevention.Crime and Criminology in South Africa will be key reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as researchers in the field of criminology and criminal justice.

Genius. Anti-artist. Charlatan. Impostor! Since 1914 Marcel Duchamp has been called all of these. No artist of the 20th century has aroused more passion and controversy, nor exerted a greater influence on art, the very nature of which Duchamp challenged and redefined as concept rather than product by questioning its traditionally privileged optical nature. At the same time, he never ceased to be engaged, openly or secretly, in provocative activities and works that transformed traditional artmaking procedures. Written with the enthusiastic support of Duchamp’s widow, this is one of the most original and important books ever written on this enigmatic artist, and challenges received ideas, misunderstanding and misinformation. With 172 illustrations in colour

The first four months of a puppy's life are critical. The knowledge and patience that it is shown at the beginning determines how it will relate to and deal with the rest of the world as a mature dog. For instance, one big issue that must be addressed is the time at home when everybody is out at work. Puppies can suffer from separation anxiety complex. This can become very serious and affect the adult personality. This book proofs the puppy against this problem. And it explains what symptoms to watch out for in case of slippage. It is a comprehensive and insightful book that produces well-behaved dogs everybody can live with and love.

Writing and America surveys the writing genres that have contributed to the American notions of America . Essays from scholars from both side of the Atlantic chart the range of responses to American nationhood from colonial times to the present and include dissenting responses from communities such as native American, black and feminist writers. Case studies from writers such as James Fenimore Cooper and William Carlos Williams provide a framework for discussions on topics such as colonial notions of America as the promised land, the discourses of nationhood in the republic, the sense of nationhood in American historiography, and the formation of the American Canon. Draws upon extracts from the American Bills of Rights and the Constitution as examples of different types of writing.
Integral bridges

In recent years, integral bridges have become increasingly popular in the UK. The Highways Agency standard now requires, where possible, that all new bridges with a length of less than sixty metres should be of integral form. In addition, it has been found that, due especially to the problems and costs associated with failed expansion joints, integral bridges are not only cost effective but also have a longer lifespan. Integral Bridges was commissioned by the Highways Agency to produce guidance for bridge designers by addressing the thermally induced soil/structure interaction problem created by environmental changes of temperature and the associated cyclical displacements imposed on the granular backfill to the bridge abutments. It develops a better theoretical understanding of the cyclic performance, in particular the strain racheting in the backfill soil when in contact with a stiff structure. It also identifies the governing soil parameters and examines their influence in the interaction problem, develops numerical modelling procedures to predict interactive soil behaviour, and identifies and quantifies the controlling features of bridge structures relevant to the interaction problem.
