Senecan viisaat neuvot kaikuivat kuuroille korville.Octavia-tragedia on kulkenut meille Senecan itsensä nimissä. Stoalainen filosofi Seneca (n. 4 eaa.
Octavia, Daughter of God: The Story of a Female Messiah and Her Followers
The little-known story of the charismatic, utopian leader Octavia and her devoted followers in the interwar years In 1919, in the wake of the upheaval of World War I, a remarkable group of English women came up with their own solution to the world's grief: a new religion. At the heart of the Panacea Society was a charismatic and autocratic leader, a vicar's widow named Mabel Bartlrop. Her followers called her Octavia, and they believed that she was the daughter of God, sent to build the New Jerusalem in Bedford. When the last living members of the Panacea Society revealed to historian Jane Shaw their immense and painstakingly preserved archives, she began to reconstruct the story of a close-knit utopian community that grew to include seventy residents, thousands of followers, and an international healing ministry reaching 130,000 people. Shaw offers a detailed portrait of Octavia and describes the faith of her devoted followers who believed they would never die. Vividly told, by turns funny and tragic, Octavia, Daughter of God is about a moment at the advent of modernity, when a generation of newly empowered women tried to re-make Christianity in their own image, offering a fascinating window into the anxieties and hopes of the interwar years.

Octavia Hill (1838–1912) is today best remembered as one of the founders of the National Trust. However, her involvement in education and social reform, and particularly housing, was a large part of her work. Shocked at the poverty and overcrowding she found in London slums, she began to acquire and improve properties which would restore the tenants' dignity and self-respect. She organized a team of volunteer 'district visitors' to help the residents, and especially children, to achieve a better quality of life, including the provision of open spaces, training and recreational amenities. She was considerably influenced by Rev. F.D. Maurice, theologian and social worker, whose son, the editor of this work, married Octavia's sister Emily. The letters from which the 'life' is compiled show her extraordinary ability as an organiser, her humanity, and how much effort she put into her various activities, often overworking until she became ill.

Octavia Hill was a key figure in the open spaces and housing movement and one of the founders of the National Trust. Her legacy continues today in the form of many active bodies such as the modern National Trust, the Open Spaces Society and the Family Welfare Association. First published in 1928, this work is a collection of Octavia Hill’s early letters, edited by her sister Emily Southwood Maurice. The letters throw considerable light on the difficulties she encountered in the tenements and how she first realised the principles on which she would later act. This book will be of interest to those studying the history of social welfare and poverty.
