Botnets

Malware poses one of the major threats to all currently operated computer systems. The scale of the problem becomes obvious by looking at the global economic loss caused by different kinds of malware, which is estimated to be more than US$ 10 billion every year. Botnets, a special kind of malware, are used to reap economic gains by criminals as well as for politically motivated activities. In contrast to other kinds of malware, botnets utilize a hidden communication channel to receive commands from their operator and communicate their current status. The ability to execute almost arbitrary commands on the infected machines makes botnets a general-purpose tool to perform malicious cyber-activities.Botnets provides a comprehensive analysis of the topic, and comprises both technical and non-technical sections written by leading cybersecurity experts. The non-technical section addresses how botnet infrastructure could be exploited for national security and cybercrime purposes. It approaches the subject as a public policy issue and analyzes the phenomenon of botnets from national security, law enforcement and regulatory policy perspectives, and makes recommendations for policy-makers on different public policies, highlighting the need for international response mechanisms. The technical section provides insight into current botnet techniques and discusses state-of-the-art countermeasures to combat the botnet threat in detail. It includes new detection methods as well as different approaches to actively compromise running botnets.

This PhD sought to determine the mechanisms for the reactor explosions by mapping, collecting and analysing samples from across the area of Japan that received radioactive fallout from the explosions. In doing this, the author conducted significant fieldwork in the restricted-access fallout zone using ground and novel UAV-based mapping of radiation to identify hot-spot areas for sample collecting but also using these tools to verify the efficacy of the clean-up operations ongoing in the prefecture. Such fieldwork was both technically pioneering for its use of UAVs (drones) but also selfless in terms of bravely entering a nuclear danger area to collect samples for the greater benefit of the scientific community.

Historical Vocabulary of Addiction includes in one volume all the entries posted on the website of the International Network for History of Neuropsychopharmacology between 2016 and 2022 that have each been re-edited and comprises an updated list of references. The goal of the book is to facilitate a rapprochement of the study of alcohol/drug use disorders, non-drug or behavioral addictive disorders and other psychiatric disorders within the context of psychiatry and neuropsychopharmacology. This book is intended for all psychiatrists and others who are interested in mental disorders, especially those who have not viewed patients who suffer from addictive disorders as typically in their bailiwick. By reading this book, all can better understand the addiction vocabulary and how it is relevant to them in clinical work. Each entry provides an appreciation not only of the meaning of the words related to addictive disorders but also their historical origins and the evolution of their use up to the present. Some examples of the words that are examined in detail in Historical Vocabulary of Addiction include Addiction, Alcoholism, Blackout, Competence, Conditioning, Craving, Delirium Tremens, Empathy, Gambling, Intoxication, Kindling, Mindfulness, Motivation, Pain, Prevention, Recovery, Resilience, Salience, Sexual Addiction, Tolerance, Trauma, Wernicke-Korsakoff Syndrome, among many more. The organization of the material under each heading in a conventional alphabetical order renders these vignettes more readily accessible for educational and other purposes. Additionally, each contribution can now be properly referenced as part of the historical record of the fields of psychiatry and neuropsychopharmacology.

A Life in Norfolk's Archaeology: 1950-2016

Peter Wade-Martins

This is a history of archaeological endeavour in Norfolk set within a national context. It covers the writer's early experiences as a volunteer, the rise of field archaeology as a profession and efforts to conserve the archaeological heritage against the tide of destruction prevalent in the countryside up to the 1980s when there was not even a right of access to record sites before they were lost. Now developers often have to pay for an excavation before they can obtain planning consent. The book features progress with archaeology conservation as well as the growth of rescue archaeology as a profession both in towns and in the countryside. Many of the most important discoveries made by aerial photography, rescue excavations and metal detecting from the 1970s onwards are illustrated. The last section covers the recent growth of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust as an owner of some of the most iconic rural sites in Norfolk. The book concludes with a discussion of some issues facing British field archaeology today.

Kicking a Ball Down Havelock Street

Kicking a Ball Down Havelock Street

What to do when you're no good at football in a city that's obsessed with it? Keep playing, keep trying and see where things will lead. An old Scouse expression proclaimed "He couldn't kick a ball down Havelock Street" and, given the steepness of that long-gone thoroughfare, this was some achievement.Terrible schoolboy footballers everywhere can identify with being picked last on the team and facing the cruel humour of 1970s P.E. teachers, as we froze on muddy pitches. Almost by chance, Mackarel is thrown back into playing the sport he loves but can't play, eventually leading to high school "soccer" coaching jobs in the United States. Things go inexplicably well until he returns to his home city and his comic ineptitude once more surfaces.

In 2017 Martin Peter Kielty decided to abandon his life in Glasgow, Scotland, and move onto a narrowboat on the canals of England and Wales. It took two years to escape the shackles of a media career and city life. Those years were followed by a long period of building a new relationship with the world around him. This anthology of poems and short stories were written during that period, and reflect the flashpast ideas, recurring suspicions and offset observations that led to the creation of The Boozer Cruiser, his current art project. The title Signal Violet is inspired by his narrowboat home.
