Reagan Versus The Sandinistas

Reagan Versus The Sandinistas

Thomas W Walker; Harvey Williams; Peter Kornbluh; Eva Gold

Routledge
2020
sidottu
The product of research and investigation by a team of sixteen authors, Reagan versus the Sandinistas is the most comprehensive and current study to date of the Reagan administration's mounting campaign to reverse the Sandinista revolution. The authors thoroughly examine all major aspects of Reagan's "low-intensity war," from the U.S. government's attempts at economic destabilization to direct CIA sabotage and the sponsorship of the contras or freedom fighters. They also explore less-public tactics such as electronic penetration, behind-the-scenes manipulation of religious and ethnic tensions, and harassment of U.S. Nicaraguan specialists and "fellow travelers." The book concludes with a consideration of the impact of these activities and their implications for international law, U.S. interests, U.S. polity, and Nicaragua itself. Reagan versus the Sandinistas is designed not only for courses on Latin America, U.S. foreign policy, and international relations, but also for students, scholars, and others interested in understanding one of the most massive, complex efforts—short of direct intervention—organized by the United States to overthrow the government of another country.

The Molecular Basis of Cancer

The Molecular Basis of Cancer

Peter B. Farmer; John M. Walker

Springer-Verlag New York Inc.
2012
nidottu
This book aims to describe the current state of knowledge and possible future developments in a number of major areas of research into the nature, causes and treatment of cancer. The contributing authors have been encouraged to discuss their subjects at the molecular level. It will become apparent to the reader that considerable developments in the understanding of the fundamental nature of cancer, in molecular terms, are constantly being made. This is particularly the case in the area of oncogene research where differences between tumour and normal cells can now be defined in terms of altered expression of DNA sequences. An understanding of the methods available for detecting cancer, of the process of carcinogenesis and of the means available for treating cancer can only be achieved with a precise knowledge of the basic biochemical and molecular processes involved. Since it is all to easy for the research scientist to become totally absorbed within the specialised area of research in which he is involved, the first chapter is an attempt to encourage a broader field of vision by introducing the clinician's view of the cancer problem, which illustrates the broad spectrum of basic problems that need to be solved by the cancer researcher.

Island Environments in a Changing World

Island Environments in a Changing World

Lawrence R. Walker; Peter Bellingham

Cambridge University Press

sidottu
Islands represent unique opportunities to examine human interaction with the natural environment. They capture the human imagination as remote, vulnerable and exotic, yet there is comparatively little understanding of their basic geology, geography, or the impact of island colonization by plants, animals and humans. This detailed study of island environments focuses on nine island groups, including Hawaii, New Zealand and the British Isles, exploring their differing geology, geography, climate and soils, as well as the varying effects of human actions. It illustrates the natural and anthropogenic disturbances common to island groups, all of which face an uncertain future clouded by extinctions of endemic flora and fauna, growing populations of invasive species, and burgeoning resident and tourist populations. Examining the natural and human history of each island group from early settlement onwards, the book provides a critique of the concept of sustainable growth and offers realistic guidelines for future island management.

Commercial Regulation and Judicial Review

Commercial Regulation and Judicial Review

Hart Publishing

The development of judicial review has been one of law's great growth industries for more than a quarter of a century. It is the public bodies whose activities are routinely subjected to judicial scrutiny which have felt the effects of judicial review most keenly. There has also been a trend in recent years towards judicial review of private bodies whose activities include a public aspect. This has meant a growing awareness,in industry and commerce, of the potential for review of regulatory decisions. In light of the growing importance of this branch of public law, the LSE and Brick Court Chambers decided jointly to host a series of seminars out of which this book has developed. In this important new book expert academics and practitioners (some of them lawyers working in regulated industries) analyse the origins and modern growth of judicial review in the commercial context and attempt to analyse the way in which the law may develop in the future.
Practical Patient Safety

Practical Patient Safety

Despite sustained efforts to improve patient safety, preventable harm remains a persistent challenge in healthcare. Panagioti's 2019 meta-analytic indicate a 6% prevalence of avoidable patient harm, with 12% of these events resulting in severe outcomes or mortality. Progress in general has been limited, and a paradigm shift is needed. This second edition of Practical Patient Safety shows frontline doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals how techniques developed and used by staff in High Reliability Organisations, such as the railway and aviation industries. It builds on the foundational aim of its predecessor, which is to equip individual healthcare professionals with practical, evidence-based techniques for error prevention in routine clinical settings. Drawing on insights from high-reliability industries such as aviation and rail, the book explores how small, intentional changes in communication, crisis management, and workplace civility can disrupt error chains and enhance safety. With a focus on actionable strategies as structured readback, precise language use, and simulation-based preparation, this title provides a basic advice for the individual health care worker on error prevention in their day-to-day practice.

This integrated collection describes the importance of forage legumes for pasture development and improvement in the tropics and subtropics. Leading agronomists review the magnitude of the need for pasture improvement; tropical and subtropical soil and climate environments; reports of the successful use of legumes in pasture development in a wet and a dry tropical environment; and the scope of the problem in terms of area to be developed and development logistics required. Three legume genera,Centrosema, Desmodium, andStylosanthes, are discussed in detail--information is presented on taxonomy, adaptation, distribution, productivity, and usefulness--and considerable emphasis is placed onRhizobiumgermplasm resources for these genera. A concluding section of technical essays addresses special considerations in using tropical legumes in pasture development and presents a coordinated multidisciplinary approach to legume exploration and evaluation.

Policing the European Union

International co-operation in criminal law enforcement has become a centrally important policy issue for Europe in the 1990s. In criminal matters, when a decision is taken to go beyond the discretionary exchange of information towards institutionalized police co-operation, a whole Pandora's box of issues and problems is opened. This book, based on interviews in a wide variety of documentary sources, examines the progress of this co-operation. The authors cover all the major and theoretical issues associated with the emerging pattern of co-operation, including the harmonization of criminal law and criminal procedure, law enforcement strategies, police organization and discipline, and the politics of immigration and civil liberties. In a European Union without internal border controls there is widespread agreement on the objective of closer police co-operation. But prospects in some areas are not good and there are potential pitfalls, even dangers, along the road to more integrated arrangements. The authors conclude by making recommendations that proper accountability arrangements are a prerequisite of a balanced and efficient system of European police co-operation.
The Application of Science in Environmental Impact Assessment

The Application of Science in Environmental Impact Assessment

This book charts the history of the application of science in environmental impact assessment (EIA) and provides a conceptual and technical overview of scientific developments associated with EIA since its inception in the early 1970s. The Application of Science in Environmental Impact Assessment begins by defining an appropriate role for science in EIA. From here it goes on to reflect more closely on empirical and deductive biophysical sciences as they relate to well-known stages of the generic EIA process and explores whether scientific theory and practice are at their vanguard in EIA and related applications. Throughout the book the authors reflect on biophysical science as it applies to stages of the EIA process and also consider debates surrounding the role of science as it relates to political and administrative dimensions of EIA. Based on this review, the book concludes that improvements to the quality of science in EIA will rely on the adoption of stronger participatory and collaborative working arrangements.Covering key topics including foundational scientific guidance materials; frameworks for implementing science amid conflict and uncertainty; and emerging ecological concepts, this book will be of great interest to students, scholars and practitioners of EIA.
