It was the spring of 1935. It seemed a wonderful time to grow up in the cozy, country town of Flanary. Little could one realize that soon everything they took for granted would change and could never be the same. The depression rages, death occurs in the home place and the women are left to adapt as they had no choice. Aura Leigh viewed her first look at life through a child's eyes and later as a beautiful young woman with so many hopes and dreams. Later she descends through the journeys of mental hell; she struggled to find her way out. This is an empowering story of one woman's journey through life, her courage to face the repercussions of the choices she made and the strength to not only survive, but to actually live again.

The Films of Mike Leigh is the first critical study of one of the most important and eccentric directors of British independent filmmaking. Although active since 1971, Leigh has only come to the attention of an international audience in the 1990s through films such as Secrets and Lies, and Career Girls. Like Robert Altman and John Cassevetes, Leigh works improvisationally, beginning with a small group of actors around whom he builds his films during months of private rehearsal. The script is written during this process. Ray Carney examines Leigh’s working method and films in the intellectual and social contexts in which they were created. He argues that Leigh cannot be simply considered within the British realist tradition of Osborne and Loach. All of Leigh’s major box office successes, including Naked, Life is Sweet and High Hopes, are analyzed, interpreted, and shown to be among the finest examples of cinema.
Wellington's Rifles: The British Light Infantry and Rifle Regiments, 1758?1815
Until now there has not been a serious study of the rifle-armed regiments of the British Army that earned such renown in the Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns. Compiled by a former rifleman, Ray Cusick, who has written extensively on the subject, Wellington's Rifles examines the new rifle regiments, how they came about, their development, and their actions. The author also investigates the introduction of rifled muskets into the British Army in the French and Indian wars of the eighteenth century, where they were shunned by the military establishment, to their transition into a key element in Wellington's extraordinarily successful Peninsular army. The training and tactics of the riflemen are explained and each significant engagement in which they were involved is explored in thrilling detail. It was the riflemen of the 95th Regiment that inspired Bernard Cornewell's famous series of Richard Sharpe books. That was the fiction--here is the reality. Featuring a foreword by renowned Napoleonic historian Ian Fletcher, Wellington's Rifles is an authoritative account of the early history of rifle regiments in the British Army. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.
A Journey Towards Endless Light Out Of Pitiless Darkness
This anthology fuses an array of poems and short stories, meticulously crafted over many years. It spans a diverse spectrum of themes-from the lighthearted whimsy of comedy to the profound depths of everyday human experiences. The author presents a distinctive perspective on biblical scriptures, enriching them with personal insights and reflections. Moreover, this collection acts as a reflective mirror, capturing the essence of pivotal events and characters that have left an indelible mark on the author's life journey. In homage to the Bard, the author has skillfully crafted a series of sonnets that honor both the traditional Shakespearean style and the lyrical Italian form. Adding a touch of whimsy, the book includes a selection of limericks, initially penned in jest but now presented for the readers' delight. The short stories explore themes of unrequited love, sacrifice, forgiveness, fractured vows, the resilience of the human spirit, the devastating impact of war on innocent children, heartbreak, resurgence, the fallibility of human judgment, enduring love, jealousy, and the pain of abandonment. Each story conveys a message that resonates deeply with the reader. The book's title reflects the author's transformative journey from the shadows of adversity to the radiant light of divine grace. This profound metamorphosis is delicately woven into the fabric of the poetry and prose, offering readers an intimate glimpse into the soul of a writer reborn. This work is the second installment in a series, following the author's initial offering, "Of Sadness and Of Pleasure."
