René Girard and Political Philosophy

René Girard and Political Philosophy

More people live under democratic governments than ever before, in a state of relative `freedom’. But the majority of us pursue goals, goods and desires defined by others. And so our era of greatest political freedom, in conjunction with free markets and consumerism, has unleashed the greatest frenzy of imitation. From Plato to Rawls, political thinkers assumed that we have sufficient rational power and freedom to resolve the conflicts posed by our highly social yet volatile human nature. René Girard thinks otherwise. René Girard and Political Philosophy brings Girard's evolutionarily informed and apocalyptic thought into confrontation with the key thinkers of the Western tradition of political philosophy and in doing so rewrites the history of political philosophy in light of mimetic theory and its more recent connection to evolutionary thought. This book expands Girard scholarship, emphasizing the relevance of evolutionary theory to political philosophy, and articulating a new understanding of Girard, politics and political philosophy. Kent Enns' line of interpretation produces not only a mimetic reading of key political thinkers such as Hobbes, Rousseau, Nozick, Aristotle, Hume and Hayek, but also the case for reassessing the entire tradition, presenting the idea of a mimetic political philosophy.
René Girard and Creative Mimesis
For half a century René Girard’s theories of mimetic desire and scapegoating have captivated the imagination of thinkers and doers in many fields as an incisive look into the human condition, particularly the roots of violence. In a 1993 interview with Rebecca Adams, he highlighted the positive dimensions of mimetic phenomena without expanding on what they might be. Now, two decades later, this groundbreaking book systematically explores the positive side of mimetic theory in the context of the multi-faceted world of creativity. Several authors build on Adams’ insight that loving mimesis can be understood as desiring the subjectivity of the other, particularly when the other may be young or wounded. With highly nuanced arguments authors show how mimetic theory can be used to address child and adult development, including the growth of consciousness and a capacity to handle complexity. Mimetic theory is brought to bear on big questions about creativity in nature, evolutionary development, originality, and religious intrusion into politics.

The brilliant and ground-breaking mimetic theory of the French-American theorist René Girard (1923-2015)has gained wide-ranging recognition, yet its development has received less attention. This volume presents the important correspondence—conducted in French and as yet unpublished, let alone translated into English—between Girard and his major theological interlocutor Raymund Schwager SJ (1935-2004). It presents the personal relationship between two great thinkers that led to the development of a significant break-through in the humanities. In particular it reveals the theological development of Girard’s thought in dialogue with Schwager, who was concerned to assist Girard in areas where he had little expertise and had encountered major criticism, such as the theological application of sacrifice. These issues in particular had placed major barriers to Girard’s acceptance in theological circles. These letters reveal how Girard, with Schwager’s help, entered the mainstream of theological debate.
