The Burrowes book is well written and provides a balanced if familiar assessment of events. He finds fault in the East-West perspective of U.S. foreign policy in the Third World, but his call for greater assertiveness by regional groupings to control their own affairs is wishful thinking, given the divisions exhibited in this case. Choice Why were so many of America's staunch allies as well as many Congressmen and opinion leaders opposed to the joint invasion of Grenada by the United States and the Caribbean neighbors of that tiny island-nation? What led to the Grenadian government crisis of 1983, and--above all--was the threat perceived by the Reagan administration real? These and related issues are explored in Reynold Burrowes' comprehensive account of the Grenada affair, a chapter in modern diplomacy and warfare that remains an enigma to many observers.

Political Philosophy, Educational Administration and Educative Leadership

In this book Reynold Macpherson initiates a politically-critical theory of educative leadership as a fresh line of inquiry in the practice, research and theory of educational administration and educational leadership. Divided into four parts, the book introduces the sub-discipline of political philosophy to the field of educational administration, management and leadership. It does this by clarifying the knowledge domain of each and identifying how four political ideologies, specifically pragmatism, communitarianism, communicative rationalism and egalitarian liberalism, have primarily informed and surreptitiously provided contestable justifications for power in the development of practice, research and theory in the field of study. The book goes on to offer three case studies illustrating how political philosophy can be used to interpret how people become leaders and administrators of educational institutions and systems. Additional case studies then demonstrate how crises in governance in educational institutions and systems can be analyzed and improvements made using the tools of political philosophy. The final part uses the sub-discipline to critique the author’s decades of research into educative leadership, and concludes the book by both establishing the relativity of politically-critical critique and the ideology it favours; neo-pragmatism. Political Philosophy, Educational Administration and Educative Leadership will provide practitioners, researchers and theorists in educational administration, management and leadership with a deeper appreciation of power by formally introducing them to the assumptions, limits and tools of political philosophy.
First published in 1998. The following essays conclude a series of five, which fall into two groups and are therefore published in separate volumes. While mysticism, save for a few casual references, found no place in the studies on the Lubdbu 'l-Albdb of 'Awff and the Luzumiyydt of Abu '1-'Ala al-Ma'arri, in these now brought together it has taken entire possession of the field. Ibnu 'l-Farid, indeed, is an exquisite poet; and the picture of Abu Sa'id ibn Abi '1-Khayr, drawn by pious faith and coloured with legendary romance, may be looked upon as a work of art in its way. But on the whole the literary interest of the present volume is subordinate to the religious and philosophical. The author has tried to make the reader acquainted with three Sufis famous in the East and worthy of being known in Europe.

A study of Henry Ford and rural America in the 1920s
The Arabs during a thousand years or more produced one of the richest and most extensive literatures of the world, embracing fine poetry (of the fierce desert life equally with the sophistication of royal courts), belles lettres (learned essays, satires, de arte amoris), religious, mystical and philosophical writings, and huge compendia of history, biography and geography. For sixty years, the best account in English of this vast output has been, by universal consent, R. A. Nicholson's Literary History of the Arabs; its supremacy will long remain unchallenged. That it is a book full of erudition and high critical judgement goes without saying; its author is also a poet-translator of rare excellence.
Two essays on Persian and Arabic poetic literature, which form the first part of a collection of essays by Nicholson. This volume was written during the First World War and originally published in 1921. The second volume Studies in Islamic Mysticism was reissued in the Cambridge University Press Library Collections series in 1967. The essays contain full quotation in translation and the original texts appear in an appendix.
