Harriet Tubman, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Clara Barton, Julia Ward Howe, and Sarah Josepha Hale came from backgrounds that ranged from abject enslavement to New York City’s elite. Surmounting social and political obstacles, they emerged before and during the worst crisis in American history, the Civil War. Their actions became strands in a tapestry of courage, truth, and patriotism that influenced the lives of millions-and illuminated a new way forward for the nation. In this collective biography, The Better Angels, Robert C. Plumb traces these five remarkable women’s awakenings to analyze how their experiences shaped their responses to the challenges, disappointments, and joys they encountered on their missions. Here is Tubman, fearless conductor on the Underground Railroad, alongside Stowe, the author who awakened the nation to the evils of slavery. Barton led an effort to provide medical supplies for field hospitals, and Union soldiers sang Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on the march. And, amid national catastrophe, Hale’s campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday moved North and South toward reconciliation.

This book gives a treatment of exterior differential systems. It will in clude both the general theory and various applications. An exterior differential system is a system of equations on a manifold defined by equating to zero a number of exterior differential forms. When all the forms are linear, it is called a pfaffian system. Our object is to study its integral manifolds, i. e. , submanifolds satisfying all the equations of the system. A fundamental fact is that every equation implies the one obtained by exterior differentiation, so that the complete set of equations associated to an exterior differential system constitutes a differential ideal in the algebra of all smooth forms. Thus the theory is coordinate-free and computations typically have an algebraic character; however, even when coordinates are used in intermediate steps, the use of exterior algebra helps to efficiently guide the computations, and as a consequence the treatment adapts well to geometrical and physical problems. A system of partial differential equations, with any number of inde pendent and dependent variables and involving partial derivatives of any order, can be written as an exterior differential system. In this case we are interested in integral manifolds on which certain coordinates remain independent. The corresponding notion in exterior differential systems is the independence condition: certain pfaffian forms remain linearly indepen dent. Partial differential equations and exterior differential systems with an independence condition are essentially the same object.

Fifteen years after sending her college sweetheart off to Vietnam, Barbara Mayfield travels to a reunion of her Colorado alma mater, hoping that time has not run out for her. All she has are memories of Rick Jenkins, the California surfer boy who vagrantly stole her heart and left her tearfully standing at the station. Their adventures take them from the white slopes of the Rockies to the wild surf of the Pacific. But the war is not the only obstacle separating the couple. Their differing spiritual views often cause a rift in their relationship. Barbara must decide if she can forget the past and trust God enough for her future--with or without Rick.

Tea in the Heather is Kate Roberts's classic tale of family and community in the hill-farms and slate quarries of Gwynedd. Beautifully realized, never idealized, it follows the life of Begw Gruffydd, the little girl who grows from the age of four to nine in the book. With her eye for detail

Social work law is at the foundation of all social work practice, from shaping professional boundaries to determining the level of intervention. Every case is complex and unique and therefore requires different legal treatment; this means it is absolutely vital that social workers not only understand the law, but are able to critically analyse the legal framework and apply it to their practice. This book provides students and practitioners with an essential guide to adult social care law. It lays out the key case law, core legislation and the HSPCC standards as they apply to different areas of adult social care. This includes issues of capacity, making an assessment, supporting carers and working with vulnerable adults. Designed to support learning needs, the book is packed with engaging case studies and reflective exercises, as well as a legal toolbox to help simplify the legal jargon. Whether you are a student or practitioner, this is a practical, accessible guide to competent and lawful practice in adult social care.
In the novel's Preface, the Author states: "In a few short words, the content of the book is this: A boy dedicates himself to the clerical profession with the fire of childlike enthusiasm, the youth goes astray in his profession, and the man, 'because not all flowering dreams ripened, ' has the notion of giving it up and 'fleeing to the desert.' Yet Heaven has decided otherwise. With resignation he comes back to himself and begins again to believe in his calling. Besides this, everything which is presented in the book belongs partly to the characteristics of the hero appearing in it, partly to the characteristics of our time chiefly with regard to religious, ecclesiastical, and especially clerical matters."
