The Domestic Politics of International Relations
This title was first published in 2000. An important comparative study, which considers the domestic/international interface. The book covers climate change in Australia; New Zealand and the abolition of nuclear weapons; the Bougainville conflict and settlement in Papua New Guinea; Decolonization (New Caledonia, East Timor, West Papua); Indigenous Rights (Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji); Governance Reform and Environmental Management challenges in the Pacific Island states. The conclusion evaluates propositions advanced in the introductory chapter regarding the distinctive domestic/international issues raised and argues that, in order to comprehend foreign relations in an increasingly complex world, there is no substitute for a thorough knowledge of distinctive local, social and political dynamics shaping international orientations. The theme of the book is the way that these interactions have operated in the cases examined.

Changing Rural Systems In Oman

Changing Rural Systems In Oman

First Published in 1999. Oman in the decades prior to the 1960s was largely isolated from the rest of the world and its changing economies and societies. With a limited education, little international links, small health systems and government under the then Sultan Said bin Taimur. Rural communities in northern Oman had very little contact with the Sultan's government, which was based in the southern province of Dhofar. In a world in which people in most countries, including the Gulf States, gained at least some benefit from modem education and health services, Omani villagers and pastoralists had recourse only to Koranic schools and traditional healers. On the other hand, however, they retained full responsibility for the management of their rural resources on which they depended for their livelihoods and for life itself and had evolved effective communal systems for their development and conservation. These were exemplified by regulations governing the protection of trees and by the work of the committees which controlled the traditional falaj water supply network. People worked interdependently, responding to the contributions made by other members of the rural communities in a system of mutual self-reliance. They also lived ~n harmony with their environment in a manner which time had proven to be truly sustainable. This volume looks at the changes that occurred after Sultan Qaboos came to power in 1970.

The United Nations in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific
This study of the United Nations in Southeast Asia and the South Pacific evaluates the organization's role and performance in Cambodia and over refugees; regarding human rights, development, environment and the needs of women; within regional cooperation; and as an instrument of state policy. These cases illustrate how multilateral conduct through the United nations provides a barometer indicating the intensity with which policy initiatives and values are sustained by relevant governmental interests alike. In the regional settings considered, conduct towards and within the UN has amplified unresolved value differences regarding relations with major powers, sustainability, and national identity.

Set during the background of the recent civil war in Sri Lanka, this somewhat sad and ultimately realistic story traces the lives of two individuals from vastly different backgrounds.Nadesan is a trained mechanic working in the north-east of the country in his father's garage. Traumatized by the loss of his young family at the hands of the military and obsessed by the need to avenge their death, he has to find a way to hurt the people who took away everything he loved. Driven to the depths of despair he doesn't care if he has to die in the process. Amanthi works as a burns unit doctor in the capital Colombo, treating women driven by the cycle of domestic violence and cultural tradition to despair and self-immolation. She has to call on all her skills and experience treating burn victims when a car bomb explodes outside the crowded central bus terminal in the market suburb of Pettah killing and injuring hundreds of people.Even amid the most unimaginable horrors of war, each will find a clear purpose; one to maim and destroy and the other to save lives and rebuild.

88% of consumers think gift returns go right back on the shelf to be resold to the next consumer. This belief is false. Most end up in landfills. 5.8 Billion tons of returns end up in landfills each year. The shipping process for these gifts emits 16 million metric tons of CO2 each year. Returning a gift can cost the seller 66% of the gift's sale price, making it cheaper to dispose of the return and simply send a replacement. Donum provides 7 easy and thoughtful steps to becoming a sustainable gift giver - to help stop gift returns in their tracks and create a sustainable gifting experience by purchasing the right gift, and getting it right the first time. The simple ideas outlined in Donum will help alleviate the massive waste of resources, save shoppers time, and help solve the problems that reverse logistics simply cannot. This is a gift to you, to us, and the planet. Proceeds from the sale of this book go to develop the Donum application to further this environmental decision. Proceeds from the Donum group of products goes back into our local communities to educate and equip children with learning and behavioral needs.
