The Secrets of Florence: Fascinating Facts, Amusing Anecdotes, Titbits, and Hidden Truths about Florence's Greatest Artists and Monuments, Illustratin
Tourists who visit Florence to admire its masterpieces of art and architecture would observe them with even greater interest if they knew the many curious facts and the frequently comical episodes that are hidden beneath the solemnity and magnificence of these masterpieces. Real events, legends, traditions and typical expressions reveal the other side of Florence, bringing the city, and the wily and ingenious Florentines with their famous repartee, vibrantly to life. The Secrets of Florence is a peek behind the scenes into the history of the city: from its Etruscan origins to when the Florin, and Florentine merchants and bankers, ruled the commercial world, through to the golden age of the Renaissance. The truce in the constant rivalry between Florence and Pisa; the tax on swearing introduced to fund the construction of the cathedral; the love story that gave rise to the Guelphs and the Ghibellines; the miracles of the preachers; the bell that once saved Savonarola's life; the quirks and witticisms of Benvenuto Cellini and Michelangelo; the pranks of Buffalmacco; and the Florentines who discovered America. These are just some of the numerous secrets revealed in this entertaining book, penned with the light touch and self-deprecating irony that is the hallmark of the Florentine spirit.1st edition: June 2008Reprints: January 2009, December 2009, December 2010, December 2012, December 2014, September 2016, February 2019, March 2022, December 20231st English edition: The Secrets of Florence, Sarnus, Florence, January 2025 (translation: Aelmuire Helen Cleary)

Homer's Secret Odyssey

Homer's Secret Odyssey

Homer is renowned as the finest of the storytellers who for countless generations passed down by word of mouth the myths and legends of Ancient Greece. Yet, for some 2500 years there have been persistent folk memories that his genius extended far beyond literature and that scientific knowledge was hidden in his stories of heroes and villains, gods and ghosts, monsters and witches. Research now reveals that at a time when the Greeks did not have a written script, Homer concealed an astonishing range of learning about calendar making and cycles of the sun, moon and planet Venus in the Odyssey, his epic of the Fall of Troy and the adventures of the warrior-king Odysseus.

We follow the story of a young orphan named Perinne, who - despite poverty and misfortune - maintains her nature as a motivated, moral and resourceful young girl. Only through her wit and intelligence is Perinne able to escape the grim, oppressive working conditions of her friends inside the industrialised city. However, rather than simply leave her friends behind Perinne uses her influential personality to persuade a factory owner to better his employees' conditions and rights as workers. He assents to her requests, and this event makes the daring Perinne something of a hero in the community. The later part of the book chronicles Perinne's search for her lost family, a quest which is as exciting as it is suspenseful as we wonder: will the bold youngster discover her long lost relatives?

The Cauldron: Nato's Campaign in Libya

The Cauldron: Nato's Campaign in Libya

Rob Weighill; Florence Gaub

Oxford University Press, USA
2018
sidottu
In March 2011, NATO launched a mission hitherto entirely unthinkable: to protect civilians against Libya's ferocious regime, solely from the air. NATO had never operated in North Africa, or without troops on the ground; it also had never had to move as quickly as it did that spring. It took seven months, 25,000 air sorties, 7,000 combat strike missions, 3,100 maritime hailings and nearly 400 boardings for Tripoli to fall. This book tells for the first time the whole story of this international drama, spanning the hallways of the United Nations in New York, NATO Headquarters in Brussels and, crucially, the two operational epicentres: the Libyan battlefield, and Joint Force Command Naples, which was in charge of the mission. Weighill and Gaub offer a comprehensive exploration of both the war's progression and the many challenges NATO faced, from its extremely rapid planning and limited understanding of Libya and its forces, to training shortfalls and the absence of post-conflict planning. Theirs is a long-awaited account of the Libyan war: one that truly considers all the actors involved.
