In response to a requirement in the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, the authors examine the strengths and vulnerabilities of China's defense industrial base (DIB) by designing and applying a comparative analytic structure that could be used to assess any country's DIB. They assess six areas: economics; governance and regulations; research, development, and innovation; workforce, labor, and skills; manufacturing; and raw materials.

This report seeks to address how the U.S. Army can most effectively project and employ land power in the Indo-Pacific, during competition and conflict, with a focus on scenarios involving China. The authors developed three concepts to guide the Army's ground force role in the theater, offering the essential architecture of basing, information, relationships, and flexible combat power needed to make the joint force effective.
Family Maps of Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska

Family Maps of Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska

280 pages with 86 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Scotts Bluff County, Nebraska, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 2886 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 10 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Jonathan Roberts: The Civil War's Quaker Scout and Sheriff

Jonathan Roberts: The Civil War's Quaker Scout and Sheriff

When Gregory P. Wilson began researching his family history, he never expected to uncover an ancestor as unique and fascinating as Jonathan Roberts. A devout Quaker, Roberts wore many hats throughout his life. He was a farmer, surveyor, husband, and father. He also was a firm abolitionist, the Civil War's Quaker scout and sheriff in northern Virginia. Roberts's noncombatant military service began shortly after his secessionist neighbors tried to kill him for his political and antislavery views. Fleeing his Fairfax County home after Confederate General P.G.T. Beauregard ordered his arrest, Roberts volunteered his surveying experience to the Union's Army of the Potomac, guiding troops to and from First Manassas (Bull Run). Over the course of the war, he was injured twice, once seriously while chasing John Singleton Mosby, the "Gray Ghost" of the Confederacy. When not delivering military dispatches, guiding troops, or scouting in the midst of cavalry charges, Roberts served as Fairfax County's twice-elected sheriff, responsible for everything from tax collections to murders. Wilson, like all who experience Roberts's story, can only marvel at his formidable ancestor's adventures and wonder if the outspoken Quaker appreciated the many ironies and contradictions of his remarkable life.
The Adventures of Jonathan Roberts: The Union's Quaker Scout in Northern Virginia, 1861-1865
This engaging history provides a portrait of a principled and passionate man who put his life on the line to uphold his convictions and do his duty as he saw it. In a time when brother was turning against brother, New Jersey Quaker Jonathan Roberts championed a message of peace and nonviolence. Despite his commitment to these ideals, Roberts would go on to play a vital part in the Union army's ultimate victory over the Confederates in northern Virginia. Author Gregory P. Wilson has long been fascinated by the legacy left by his colorful ancestor. In his latest work, Wilson tackles the more controversial issues surrounding Roberts's work with the Union army and his idealistic motivations. Roberts did not plan on joining the Union army, but he wasn't about to silence himself in deference to his secessionist-minded neighbors in Fairfax County, Virginia. In return, the rebels sent a lynching party after him and later put a price on his head. Roberts escaped with his life and believed he had a duty to fight the rebellion and slavery. He proceeded to volunteer for the Union army as a noncombatant scout. He also served as Fairfax County Sheriff during the war. Though he continued practicing pacifism in the face of extreme peril, his dedicated service made him a valuable contributor to the Union's cause and the U.S. Army's defense of Washington.
