"I'll Have My Child Back?": The Sojourner Truth Story
In the nineteenth century, women were not expected to make speeches in public. Most people felt that was a job for men. Because of prejudice, most people also refused to listen to Black speakers. Being a Black woman and former slave, Sojourner Truth had a triple handicap to overcome. Her simple message, delivered in a low booming voice was sincere and moved her listeners. Though illiterate, this woman of indomitable character and intellect left her mark as an abolitionist and eloquent spokesperson for the Women's Rights Movement.Born into slavery in Ulster County in upstate New York, she, like many other slaves, had watched her brothers and sisters sold away from their families. When she saw her own baby Peter illegally sent to Alabama into slavery, this strong determined woman went to court and demanded the return of her baby. The judge in Kingston Court listened to her plea and agreed with her. Soon her baby was home in New York with his mother: "A baby s'pose to be with his Mama, and a Mama s'pose to be with her baby. That's the way God made it and no man's got the right to undo it." This was the first ever lawsuit won by a Black parent. The short story "I'll Have My Child Back" The Sojourner Truth Story celebrates the life of this inspirational and determined woman. It tells of her struggles and victory over tremendous odds. Sojourner Truth used the American system of justice and challenged the fairness of the American privileged class. The book tells of how she won freedom for her son from a state where slavery was still legal.

Straightforward, yet often poetic accounts of the battle for freedom, three memoirs by courageous black women vividly chronicle their struggles in the bonds of slavery, their rebellion against degrading injustice, and their determination to attain racial equality. In Narrative of Sojourner Truth, one of the most important documents on slavery ever written, a passionate African American abolitionist and champion of women's rights tells of her life as a slave, her self-liberation, and her tireless campaign for racial and sexual equality. Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is the 1861 autobiographical account of the brutality of slave life by Harriet Jacobs, who speaks frankly of her master's abuse and her eventual escape, in a tale of dauntless spirit and faith. In The History of Mary Prince, the first black woman to escape from slavery in the British colonies and publish a record of her experiences vividly recalls her life in the West Indies, her rebellion against physical and psychological degradation, and her 1828 escape in England.

Memories and insights of a lifetime fighting for Black freedom and social justice Millicent E. Brown's family home at 270 Ashley Avenue in Charleston, South Carolina, was a center of civil rights activity. There Brown gained intimate knowledge of the struggle for racial justice, and those experiences set her on a life course dedicated to the civil rights struggle. Best known as the named plaintiff in the federal court case that, in 1963, forced the initial desegregation of public schools in South Carolina, her experiences as an activist range across years and well beyond her native state. Another Sojourner Looking for Truth is Brown's insightful reflection on her search for freedom in a nation deeply mired in white supremacist beliefs and overt violence against people of color. In this revealing memoir, Brown writes about her fears and doubts, as well as the challenges of being a teenager expected to "represent the race" and combat negative stereotypes of African Americans. Readers also gain perspective on the interpersonal aspects of white backlash to civil rights progress and strategic machinations within the movement. Overall, Brown's words will inform, inspire, and challenge everyone to better understand the Black Freedom Struggle and confront its ongoing challenges.
