No matter who wins the next election, Caesar will remain Caesar, doing some good and some bad. But Christians report to a different king. This issue starts with a provocation. In his opening letter, editor Peter Mommsen suggests Christians are too excited about the wrong politics: “Questions of public justice should matter deeply to Christians. We dare not be indifferent about securing healthcare for all and ending interventionist wars; we must seek to reduce abortions and strengthen families. When an election comes, we should pray and then, perhaps, lend our support to a candidate we judge may, on balance, advance social righteousness. But if the early Christians and the Anabaptists are right, this isn’t the politics that matters most. And so, as a matter of faithfulness, we should question how much it deserves of our passion and time. Our allegiance belongs elsewhere.” In contrast to an election campaign, this politics may feel grittier and less glamorous. This issue of Plough Quarterly explores what this alternate vision of faithful Christian witness in the political sphere might look like. You’ll find articles on: What two leading political theorists of left and right agree on What persecution taught Anabaptists about politics The Bruderhof’s interactions with the state Tolstoy’s case against making war more humane How some Christians read Romans 13 under fascism

Choose Your Own Inquiry! is a narrative that captures the student experiences of Inquiry in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program at Mc Master University. Allowing the reader to determine their journey of lifelong learning experiences, this book describes the epiphanies and anxieties in the process and outcomes of acquiring knowledge. Unlike other works in the field, this narrative evolved entirely from a student perspective, envisioned by students and written by students. Unprecedented by combining a qualitative research methodology and candid prose, Choose Your Own Inquiry! provides a multi-faceted and authentic rendition of learning beyond the parameters of the higher educational institution. This book extensively examines the process of learning for university students, and the conditions that facilitate optimal uptake. In particular, the continuum of inquiring, reflecting, evaluating, and reconstructing information is explored amongst students with different learning curves, needs, and preferences. Choose Your Own Inquiry! explores an innovative research approach in evaluating learning with a rich and most realistic context through in-depth interviews and written comments of students. Rather than speaking to other learners, our narrative serves as a forum where dialogue and decisions to understand more is made by the reader, as characteristic of the process of lifelong education.

Intestinal neoplasia comprises a large part of a surgical pathologist’s workload. Pathologists play a key role not only in the classification of malignancies but also in assisting screening programs, identifying incidental neoplasms, and guiding treatment by providing essential prognostic features for individual entities. A large variety of neoplasms affect the intestines, and there is ongoing discovery of new entities and prognostic features for known diseases. Pathologists and trainees should have a solid understanding of key morphologic features, pitfalls, and differential diagnoses. Importantly, pathologists should recognize and communicate features that help their clinical colleagues in making treatment decisions, with the ultimate goal of benefiting the patient first and foremost. The first volume of the Atlas of Intestinal Pathology provides a comprehensive yet concise, primarily visual review of intestinal neoplasms. It also serves asa useful resource primarily for pathologists and trainees in pathology by providing a concise yet comprehensive summary of morphology of intestinal neoplasia. Clinical practitioners and trainees also benefit from an understanding of the pathologic correlates to the diseases they manage.

Drops of Shade will remind you that you are not just people of color but that you are also human. And sometimes as your soul wonders you'll struggle with the misconceptions of accepting this symbolic prejudicial classification via your melanin instead of embracing your unique genetics. "Drops of Shade" is a literary canopy of branches & leaves connected at the trunk of our roots. Mrs. Roberts brilliantly paints pictures with words that describe the acceptance amongst people of color usually described by trivial 'Black & African-American' titles, as a systemic example of a country that adheres to a system that has conditioned us to only pay homage to our African ancestors through media while completely ignoring our rich ethnic blood lines therefore brainwashing an entire race into accepting the highest form of captivity LACK OF IMAGINATION. This book is more than another collection of poetry. It is about surviving, thriving, acknowledging, refusing, accepting, color-rising, e-racism, denial but most importantly empowerment. You will be enlightened and your mindset changed chapter by chapter. Not in anger but in a desperate attempt to seek resolution through a common goal that strengthens your understanding of the true history of a majestic and noteworthy people. This book achieves what all great literary works hope to accomplish and that is to equip people with the ability to identify and classify themselves not based upon American dream but the often unobtainable American freedom.

Robert Coover and the Generosity of the Page

"Robert Coover and the Generosity of the Page" is an unconventional study of Robert Coover's work from his early masterpiece "The Origin of the Brunists" (1966) to the recent "Noir" (2010). Written in the second person, it offers a self-reflexive investigation into the ways in which Coover's stories often challenge the reader to resist the conventions of sense-making and even literary criticism. By portraying characters lost in surroundings they often fail to grasp, Coover's work playfully enacts a "(melo)drama of cognition" that mirrors the reader's own desire to interpret and make sense of texts in unequivocal ways. This tendency in Coover's writing is indicative of a larger refusal of the ready-made, of the once-and-for-all or the authoritative, celebrating instead, in its generosity, the widening of possibilities-thus inevitably forcing the reader-critic to acknowledge the arbitrariness and artificiality of her responses.

This long-awaited update of Meyer's Wavelets: Algorithms & Applications includes completely new chapters on four topics: wavelets and the study of turbulence, wavelets and fractals (which includes an analysis of Riemann's nondifferentiable function), data compression, and wavelets in astronomy. The chapter on data compression was the original motivation for this revised edition, and it contains up-to-date information on the interplay between wavelets and nonlinear approximation. The other chapters have been rewritten with comments, references, historical notes, and new material. Four appendices have been added: a primer on filters, key results (with proofs) about the wavelet transform, a complete discussion of a counterexample to the Marr-Mallat conjecture on zero-crossings, and a brief introduction to Holder and Besov spaces. In addition, all of the figures have been redrawn, and the references have been expanded to a comprehensive list of over 260 entries. The book includes several new results that have not appeared elsewhere.Wavelet analysis-an exciting theory at the intersection of the frontiers of mathematics, science, and technology-is a unifying concept that interprets a large body of scientific research. In addition to its intrinsic mathematical interest, its applications have serious economic implications in the areas of signal and image compression. For these expanding fields, this book provides a clear set of concepts, methods, and algorithms adapted to a variety of applications ranging from the transmission of images on the Internet to theoretical studies in physics. The use of wavelet-based algorithms adopted by the FBI for fingerprint compression and by the Joint Photographic Experts Group for the new JPEG-2000 compression standard confirms the success of this theory. The authors present with equal skill and clarity the mathematical background and major wavelet applications, including the study of turbulence, fractal objects, and the structure of the universe.Never before have the historic origins, the algorithms, and the applications of wavelets been discussed in such scope, providing a unifying presentation accessible to scientists and engineers across all disciplines and levels of training. Written specifically for scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds, the material is presented in a manner that will appeal to both experts and nonexperts alike. This book is a valuable tool for anyone (from graduate student to expert) faced with signal or image processing problems. It also answers the question, "What are wavelets?" The first seven chapters trace the historical origins of wavelet theory and describe the different time-scale and time-frequency algorithms used today under the term "wavelets." Specific examples include the application of wavelet techniques to FBI fingerprint compression problems and the use of wavelets in the new JPEG standard for still image compression. Applying wavelet analysis methods to signal and image processing, fractals, turbulence, and astronomy is covered in the balance.
