Leading in a VUCA World

Leading in a VUCA World

Steven C Van Den Heuvel; Jacobus Kok

Saint Philip Street Press
2020
pokkari
This open access book brings together works by specialists from different disciplines and continents to reflect on the nexus between leadership, spirituality and discernment, particularly with regard to a world that is increasingly volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA). The book spells out, first of all, what our VUCA world entails, and how it affects businesses, organizations, and societies as a whole. Secondly, the book develops new perspectives on the processes of leadership, spirituality, and discernment, particularly in this VUCA context. These perspectives are interdisciplinary in nature, and are informed by e.g. management studies, leadership theory, philosophy, and theology. Chinese Peace in Africa

Chinese Peace in Africa

Steven C.Y. Kuo

Taylor Francis Ltd
2021
nidottu
China’s emergence in Africa is the most significant development for the continent since at least the end of the Cold War. Of the permanent members of the UN Security Council, China is also the largest contributor in terms of troop numbers to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO). While China’s potential to be a force for change in Africa is undeniable, there are wildly varied and sometimes unrealistic expectations in both the West and Africa of China’s role in Africa. A more detailed and nuanced understanding of Chinese motivations in its African engagement is necessary, in order to work effectively with China for African peace, security and development. With Liberia, Darfur and South Sudan as case studies, Kuo comprehensively examines the "Chinese peace" and places it within the context of the liberal peace debate. He does so using primary sources translated from the original Chinese, as well as interviews conducted in Mandarin with Chinese policymakers, academics, diplomats as well as Chinese company managers and businessmen working in Liberia and South Sudan. He also traces and analyses the Chinese discourse of peace, from traditional Chinese political philosophy, through Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping to post-reform and the Xi Jinping era.

The Act in Context

The Act in Context

Steven C. Hayes

The Canonical Papers of Steven C. Hayes is a compilation of his most pivotal articles written from 1982-2012. Through these selected papers, Hayes again revisits the theoretical struggles between behavioral and cognitive-behavior theories, taking us from the 1980s into present day, discussing the breakthroughs and follies. Using this as a focus point, he discusses the tradition of behavior analysis and its difficulties in addressing human language and cognition. Moving forward into the 90s, he chronicles the changes in a behavioral approach that emerge from a contextual perspective on human cognition, and lays out the foundation for a contextual behavioral science approach that he argues is more likely to lead to an understanding of human action and an alleviation of human suffering. Although the articles have previously been published, they have been edited and compiled ensure this branch of research is clear to the modern audience. The compilation was chosen by Dr. Hayes to enhance his vision for a functional contextual approach to complex human behavior.
The Renewal

The Renewal

Steven C. Smith

In his first novel, The Reversion, Steven Smith took the modern post-apocalyptic genre to a new level of general fiction, introducing us to a world after a cataclysmic collapse and taking us into the lives of those who survive and begin to rebuild. In his second novel, The Revival, he once again broke a barrier into adventure fiction, mixing humor and intense action with social commentary, political philosophy and in-depth examinations of comparative justice and cultural constructs - all skillfully woven into a compelling story of personal and societal survival so as to be both powerful yet comfortable to the reader. It was, in essence, an examination of relative societal design wrapped in a story of survival, love, loyalty, perseverance, responsibility and the desire of people to live peacefully if possible while remaining ready to respond to violent, existential threats when necessary. In this, his third novel and the third installment of the Stonemont series, Smith takes us a step farther - or perhaps several steps. The worst of the die-off is over. Over ninety percent of the continental population has perished due to starvation, disease, the violence accompanying societal collapse and the general inability of most to provide for themselves. Those who remain have come together in communities of various types and have learned to survive - some in cooperative fashion, some under the authority of strong leaders and some under the savage control of fanatical tyrants. Survival, however, is not enough for the people of Stonemont, and in them we see the renewal of industry, inter-community commerce and societal interaction, and a desire to rebuild a world that is better than the one in which they had previously lived.Civilization is returning, but in the world around them lurk difficulties and dangers of which they are not yet aware. The question is what comes next - and Smith takes us there in a way no one has before. His approach is original and his style unique, having been described as a combination of Jack London, Robert Heinlein, Stephen King and Louis L'Amour. And perhaps only this combination could have brought forth a vision and a series like this. Many have said, after reading the first two books, that they would rather live in the new world of Stonemont than in their current world. I have come to agree. And after The Renewal, you will want to as well.
The Contractor's NEC3 ECC Handbook

The Contractor's NEC3 ECC Handbook

Steven C. Evans

Wiley-Blackwell
2017
nidottu
Addresses the daily challenges faced by contractors who use the NEC3 ECC with clear, practical and useable advice on how to solve them Written in plain English for contractors and their staff, this book explains how the NEC3 contract works and provides answers to common questions. It presents complicated concepts in a simple, straightforward and understandable way, focusing mainly on day-to-day use. Steven Evans, an expert with thirty years of experience in construction, considers all the provisions of the contract and explains the procedures, obligations, and liabilities contained within it. NEC3 ECC is a process-based contract based on project management best practices. The basic philosophy behind it differs radically from the more adversarial approaches embodied by traditional contracts. While the NEC3 ECC may appear quite simple on the surface, it is often misunderstood and mismanaged by its day-to-day users. Despite the clear and urgent need for expert guides for those who use the NEC3 ECC, or who are considering adopting this increasingly popular contract, available books on the subject are highly technical and written for lawyers and professional consultants—until now. Written specifically for contractors using the NEC3 ECC contract, this book is aimed specifically at a level consistent with the knowledge and experiences of contractors and their staff. A practical guide to the procedures in the NEC3 Engineering and Construction ContractsWritten specifically for those using and administering the contracts—not for lawyers or professional consultantsConsiders all the provisions of the contract and explains the procedures, obligations and liabilitiesCovers all NEC3 ECC versions and variations created by the Main and Secondary OptionsProvides clear, concise, practical, and straightforward explanations of the NEC3 ECC form used by commercial and operational staff of main contractors The Contractor's NEC3 EEC Handbook is a vital working resource for main contractors and their employees, including quantity surveyors, commercial managers, contracts managers, project managers, site managers, and estimators.
Arresting Images

Arresting Images

Steven C. Dubin

Routledge
2016
sidottu
Although contemporary art may sometimes shock us, more alarming are recent attempts to regulate its display. Drawing upon extensive interviews, a broad sampling of media accounts, legal documents and his own observations of important events, sociologist Steven Dubin surveys the recent trend in censorship of the visual arts, photography and film, as well as artistic upstarts such as video and performance art. He examines the dual meaning of arresting images--both the nature of art work which disarms its viewers and the social reaction to it. Arresting Images examines the battles which erupt when artists address such controversial issues as racial polarization, AIDS, gay-bashing and sexual inequality in their work.
