How do modern Muslims adapt their traditions to engage with today's world? Charles Tripp's erudite and incisive book considers one of the most significant challenges faced by Muslims over the last sixty years: the challenge of capitalism. By reference to the works of noted Muslim scholars, the author shows how, faced by this challenge, these intellectuals devised a range of strategies which have enabled Muslims to remain true to their faith, whilst engaging effectively with a world not of their own making. The work is framed around the development of their ideas on Islamic socialism, economics and the rationale for Islamic banking. While some Muslims have resorted to confrontation or insularity to cope with the challenges of modernity, most have aspired to innovation and ingenuity in the search for compromise and interaction with global capitalism in the twenty-first century.
Circleway, the Story of the Women's Dream Quest
Circleway, the Story of the Women's Dream Quest is a book about a beloved spiritual gathering for women that began at San Francisco's Grace Cathedral in 1987. Judith Tripp, MA, MFT, who shepherds this gathering introduces us to the psychospiritual exercises, songs, meditations, and experiences of the Quest. She examines the elements that go into creating this overnight workshop that make it an experience that speaks to diverse women from all over the country. Judith shares her rich and eclectic spiritual life opening a window to the soulful creative process she uses to bring forth an ecumenical and welcoming celebration of the sacred feminine . . The Labyrinth, a symbolic pattern which is embedded into the floor of Chartres Cathedral in France and duplicated in churches, retreat centers and community gathering places throughout the world, is central to the Women's Dream Quest. Brought to Grace Cathedral by The Rev. Dr. Lauren Artress, the labyrinth has been the circular centerpiece of the Women's Dream Quest since 1993. The Labyrinth becomes a container for creating a sacred circle while it provides a path to walk in meditation during the Quest. On the labyrinth through music, meditation and ritual, women enter what Judith calls "The Land of the Soul". Judith weaves elements of Eastern meditation, Jewish chant, American Indian lore, Christian mysticism and ancient pagan practice into the Quest and helps us to think about how such a weaving can bring us to the heart of human connection in our increasingly fragmented world. Through description, story and songs, Circleway describes how women meet in the circle on the path of the labyrinth, questing their dreams. As author of Entering the Healing Ground Francis Weller states, In a time of increasing reliance upon technology and speed, it is refreshing to be offered the gift of this book. Judith Tripp invites us into a rhythm that is familiar to the soul, a mood that reminds us of our need for rituals that connect us to the sacred, to one another and to the earth. This is a beautiful book, elegant and wise, filled with images and stories that reconnect us with the rich legacy we have inherited from ancient times. Through her poetic language, the mystery of the labyrinth comes alive and we are taken into the heartbeat of the Dream Quest. Circleway awakens our sensitivities to the beauty and vitality of the sacred feminine, helping us to see through the myopia of modern culture's obsession with patriarchal power. Read this book and enter into the realm of the soul.
Illegal Tender: Gold, Greed, and the Mystery of the Lost 1933 Double Eagle
It's the most valuable ounce of gold in the world, the celebrated, the fabled, the infamous 1933 double eagle, illegal to own and coveted all the more, sought with passion by men of wealth and with steely persistence by the United States government for more than a half century--it shouldn't even exist but it does, and its astonishing, true adventures read like "a composite of The Lord of the Rings and The Maltese Falcon" (The New York Times). In 1905, at the height of the exuberant Gilded Age, President Theodore Roosevelt commissioned America's greatest sculptor, Augustus Saint-Gaudens--as he battled in vain for his life--to create what became America's most beautiful coin. In 1933 the hopes of America dimmed in the darkness of the Great Depression, and gold--the nation's lifeblood--hemorrhaged from the financial system. As the economy teetered on the brink of total collapse, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, in his first act as president, assumed wartime powers while the nation was at peace and in a "swift, staccato action" unprecedented in United States history recalled all gold and banned its private ownership. But the United States Mint continued, quite legally, to strike nearly a half million 1933 double eagles that were never issued and were deemed illegal to own. In 1937, along with countless millions of other gold coins, they were melted down into faceless gold bars and sent to Fort Knox. The government thought they had destroyed them all--but they were wrong. A few escaped, purloined in a crime--an inside job--that wasn't discovered until 1944. Then, the fugitive 1933 double eagles became the focus of a relentless Secret Service investigation spearheaded by the man who had put away Al Capone. All the coins that could be found were seized and destroyed. But one was beyond their reach, in a king's collection in Egypt, where it survived a world war, a revolution, and a coup, only to be lost again. In 1996, more than forty years later, in a dramatic sting operation set up by a Secret Service informant at the Waldorf-Astoria, an English and an American coin dealer were arrested with a 1933 double eagle which, after years of litigation, was sold in July 2002 to an anonymous buyer for more than $7.5 million in a record-shattering auction. But was it the only one? The lost one? Illegal Tender, revealing information available for the first time, tells a riveting tale of American history, liberally spiced with greed, intrigue, deception, and controversy as it follows the once secret odyssey of this fabulous golden object through the decades. With its cast of kings, presidents, government agents, shadowy dealers, and crooks, Illegal Tender will keep readers guessing about this incomparable disk of gold--the coin that shouldn't be and almost wasn't--until the very end.

Recovering the Riches of Anointing is a collection of the papers presented at an international symposium sponsored by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC) as part of a long-term exploration of topics of theological and pastoral concern in pastoral care of the sick. This book looks at the anointing of the sick from the vantage point of theology, history, and canon law.Since Vatican II the training and commissioning of lay Eucharistic ministers has enabled the sick and dying to receive the nourishment of Christ's body and blood regularly in their confinement at home or an institution. The sacraments of penance and the anointing of the sick, however, have become less and less available as the number of ordained priests in chaplaincy is decreasing. In response to this pastoral problem Bishop Richard J. Sklba, auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee, suggested that the NACC gather theologians together to explore the history and practice of this sacrament and other rituals in the rich tradition of the Church. Thus the papers concerning this particular sacramental ministry were written and delivered at this conference.Recovering the Riches of Anointing will be helpful for professional ministers of pastoral care; professional pastoral, liturgical, and sacramental theologians; and those engaged in pastoral ministry formation.Chapters and contributors are Introduction," by Kevin Tripp and Genevieve Glen, OSB; "The Paschal Mystery: The Intersection of Ecclesiology and Sacramental Theology in the Care of the Sick," by Susan K. Seed Provision and Agricultural Development
This work investigates the strengths and weaknesses of seed management in traditional farming systems. Many of the current controversies over globalization, intellectual property protection, biotechnology and the future of farming are played out in seed provision. This book examines seed management in traditional farming systems, reviews the history of formal plant breeding and the origins of seed trade, and examines the roles of the public and private sectors in the contemporary seed systems of industrialized and developing countries. The book also describes the major types of aid interventions in developing country seed systems and explains why many of these have not been successful. The examples in this book are drawn from original research in Asia, Africa and Latin Americaas well as from an extensive review of the literature. The result is a comprehensive picture of seed provision that allows the reader to go beyond the oversimplified views that dominate debates about agricultural development. Elements of Providence: during the Genesis Flood
The Great Genesis Flood was a violent chaotic affair; all land-based animals died and the Earth was subsequently 'remade'. There is substantial scientific evidence for the physical events which produced and resulted from the Flood, but there are also aspects of the Scriptural account which are clearly miraculous in nature. - perhaps most notably the 120 year warning and the gathering of the animals and their management in the Ark.The author explores these and other questions such as: how did the Ark survive the chaotic water movement? How did the creatures inside the Ark survive the darkness, cold and contaminated atmosphere? How did they avoid and survive Erratic Boulders? How did they endure the beginning of the Ice Age? Did these circumstances also involve direct Divine intervention; do they indeed represent Elements of Providence?
Concerning the Birth of Christ
For many centuries the western world has celebrated Christmas on December 25th. Some have wondered how this date was determined; it has been suggested that the early Church adopted the timing of pagan rituals associated with winter solstice, supplanting them with the celebration of the Light of the World, and that it is therefore unlikely that the date we have come to associate with the birth of Christ has any basis in historical reality. The author explores and correlates several lines of evidence from both scriptural and secular sources (as ancient as the writings of Josephus and as modern as NASA's lunar eclipse charts) to examine the accuracy of the date we have traditionally celebrated as Christmas. The author also discusses the challenges in understanding and aligning ancient and modern calendars and the 'missing' year from the first decade BC in order to arrive at a conclusion as to the year of the birth of our Lord.more info on website;http: //benatripp.wix.com/window-of-lif

Unfortunately, even in this modern 'scientific' world many of the basic things that people have been led to believe are not the least bit credible but are never-the-less widely held to be basic well-understood truth. It is even more unfortunate that they are offered as 'scientific' truth and it is well understood that one cannot argue with basic science. It is the 'Golden Calf' of the present age. While the general situation is pretty bleak, there are reputable scientists who diverge from the mainstream and stick closer to observation than conjecture. An example is the energy source for the Sun. It is commonly held that the Sun's source of energy is nuclear reactions and the detection of the neutrino confirms.it. However if the Sun was being powered by nuclear reactions it would be steadily getting brighter and hotter. However observation and measurement indicate that it is getting dimmer and cooler instead. Of course, if one is to stick with mainstream thinking this must be instantly dismissed as an anomaly in the overall behavior of the Sun. However these observations agree with the notion that the Sun is powered by gravitational collapse. This clearly couldn't be possible because everyone understands that the solar system has been here for billions of years, not just thousands. Misconceptions can easily lead to more misconceptions and if they reinforce one another the matter is settled Now that we have the Atomic Clock time can be measured very accurately and it is clear that the spin rate of the Earth is decreasing - at a very rapid and alarming rate. This in turn means that the axial stability of the Earth will be short-lived and could not have been in existence very long either. This is very upsetting. However like a warming Earth, sooner or later reality must be faced. Fairytales for adults deals with eight ideas. Four of them are valid and four are not. It is hoped that the discussion will help people clarify their thinking.
