Wendy is an aspiring contemporary artist whose adventures have taken her to galleries, art openings, and parties in Los Angeles, Tokyo, and Toronto. In Wendy, Master of Art, Walter Scott s sly wit and social commentary zero in on MFA culture as our hero hunkers down to complete a master of fine arts at the University of Hell in small-town Ontario. Finally Wendy has space to refine her artistic practice, but in this calm, all of her unresolved insecurities and fears explode at full volume usually while hungover. What is the post-Jungian object as symbol? Will she ever understand her course reading or herself? What if she s just not smart enough? As she develops as an artist and a person, Wendy also finds herself in a teaching position, mentoring a perpetually sobbing grade-grubbing undergrad. Scott s incisively funny take on art school pretensions isn t the only focus. Wendy, Master of Art explores the politics of open relationships and polyamory, performative activism, the precariousness of a life in the arts, as well as the complexities of gender identity, sex work, drug use, and more. At its heart, this is a book about the give and take of community about learning to navigate empathy and boundaries, and to respect herself. It is deeply funny and endlessly relatable as it shows Wendy growing from millennial art party girl to successful artist, friend, teacher and Master of Art.
This critique of the art world will have you crying with laughter. In Wendy s Revenge, Scott s titular heroine returns with a fresh set of awkward misadventures and messy nights out. When the book opens, aspiring artist Wendy has decided to move to the west coast to clear her head. She plans on getting some quality time with her collaborator and friend Winona, only to find Winona packing up to leave, having decided to move back in with her mom on the rez. All alone, Wendy endeavours to foster community in Vancouver s bleak art scene. When her hope and optimism are all used up, she packs her bags for an artist residency in Japan. Wendy then gallery hops and parties around the globe until she stumbles upon the opportunity to unite with former foe Paloma. Together they enact revenge on VVURST, the German publication that once tore her performance art to shreds. Young artists struggle with mental health issues, they get wasted and hook up with men with gross piercings, and they re afflicted with an insatiable longing for a stable identity stability they themselves undermine. Scott s deceptively simple, inky character drawings evoke millennial culture with such Jungian accuracy that you can t help but stare and giggle in equal measure. Praised by The New Yorker, Guardian, Globe and Mail, and with an appearance in the Best American Comics anthology, it s clear why Walter Scott s Wendy comics have taken critics by storm.
Wendy Murphy was rendered with incomplete paraplegia following a motor vehicle accident in 1984. She has carried on with tenacious spirit, and her life and career choices have been anything but conventional.Determined to make a difference for the physically challenged community, Wendy threw herself front and center publicly. After she established herself as a sought-after model with a number of department stores and other high-profile advertisers, she moved on to commercial and acting roles. Her biggest achievement was finding her place in front of the camera as a broadcast journalist for eight years with City TV.Today Wendy sees total access for those in wheelchairs as both a community and a political issue and she dedicates herself accordingly, all with the goal of seeing change. Just as importantly, she hopes her life and all that she's accomplished will serve as an inspiration to others; a fact that has spurred her efforts to write this memoir.Wendy's advice to others with hopes and dreams? "Reach for the stars with good intentions and the universe is sure to answer "

Wendy Carlos is one of the most influential electronic musicians of the 20th century, whose ground breaking LP, Switched-On Bach, was pivotal in elevating the Moog synthesizer to iconic status. At the same time, her highly evocative score for Stanley Kubrick's film, A Clockwork Orange, redefined the sound of electronic music for a generation of popular musicians in the US and Europe. Known in particular for her adventurous sonic re-imaginings of the music of classical composers from Bach to Beethoven, it is often forgotten that Carlos was also an accomplished composer in her own right, whose original work on albums such as Sonic Seasonings, Digital Moonscapes and Beauty In The Beast deserves equal recognition for its progressive compositional innovations and sound design techniques. With the aim of addressing this imbalance, this book offers a detailed track-by-track survey of all Carlos's unique album releases from Switched-On Bach to Tales of Heaven And Hell, placing each recording in context in relation to musical influences, technology and thematic concepts, as well as providing many analytical pointers to assist the listener in navigating her classically influenced musical aesthetic. To provide a fully rounded picture the last section of the book considers a number of Carlos's miscellaneous one-off projects and evaluates the remastered editions of her earlier LPs released on the East Side Digital label during the early 2000s.

Wendy Cope is one of Britain’s most popular poets: her first two collections have together sold almost half a million copies, and in 1998, when Ted Hughes died, she was the BBC listeners’ choice to succeed him as Poet Laureate. She is also contrarian and sometimes controversial, and has been celebrated as one of the finest parodists of her, or any, generation. It is perhaps surprising, then, that her popular appeal has been met with critical near-silence. After five major collections, Cope has received only piecemeal critical attention, mostly confined to book reviews. This is the first in-depth study of her poetry. Drawing on Cope's published work, archival material and correspondence, Rory Waterman considers her main collections, her works for children and her uncollected poems, with many close readings, and detailed considerations of her cultural and literary contexts and her poetic development.

This warm and intriguing story is about Gwendolyn Able, a severely handicapped girl, and her mother. Abandoned by the child's father they overcame the trials and difficulties of her affliction using the power of unstinted and unqualified love. Along the pathway to adulthood they affected the lives of those with whom they came in contact: teachers, coaches and team-mates. It is the author's wish that this tale will help the more fortunate to understand and sympathize with the mentally handicapped, and possibly lend hope to those who must meet similar challenges.
