A Passage to India is about how friendship may be difficult or even impossible when there are racial tensions and prejudices in peoples from different cultures and countries. It was included in its "All Time 100 Novels" list by Time magazine and thanks to this and other works by Forster addressing class and cultural conflicts, the author was nominated 16 times to the Noble Prize.

Merchant Ivory produced an award-winning film adaptation in 1985. The Modern Library ranked A Room with a View 79th on its list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century (1998). Stage, film, radio, and television adaptations The novel was first adapted for the theatre by Richard Cottrell with Lance Severling for the Prospect Theatre Company, and staged at the Albery Theatre on 27 November 1975 by directors Toby Robertson and Timothy West. According to Margaret Drabble both the structure and the uncharacteristically high death count which occurs later in the book confuse fans of Forster's.
