These works are as multi-faceted as their writer, who was a teacher, editor, public speaker, and campaign manager of mixed white, black, and Indian descent, born in New Orleans in 1875. Her pieces span the full range of literary genres - from short stories, fluffy romances, mystical novelettes, poetry, and autobiographical pieces to realistic racial drama, astute political commentary and essays, and lively newspaper columns - all bearing the stamp of her own cultural ambivalence and complex personality.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass
'But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked. 'Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat. 'We're all mad here.' The 'Alice' books are two of the most translated, most quoted, and best-known books in the world, but what exactly are they? Apparently delightful, innocent fantasies for children, they are also complex textures of mathematical, linguistic, and philosophical jokes. Alice's encounters with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire-Cat, the King and Queen of Hearts, the Mad Hatter, Tweedledum and Tweedledee and many other extraordinary characters have made them masterpieces of carefree nonsense, yet they also appeal to adults on a quite different level. Layers of satire, allusion, and symbolism about Victorian culture and politics, as well as revelations about the intricate subconscious problems of their author, add to their fascination and make them impossible to classify. This new edition explores the phenomenal range of reference, and the paradoxical appeal of two of the most inventive books in world literature. It also includes an episode removed by Carroll from the proofs of Through the Looking-Glass, called 'The Wasp in a Wig'. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Alice Paul has long been an elusive figure in the political history of American women. This biography of Paul's early years and suffrage leadership offers fresh insight into her private persona and public image. Here, for the first time, the authors examine the sources of Paul's ambition and the growth of her political consciousness. They substantially revise our understanding about Paul's engagement with suffrage activism and later emergence onto the American scene. Paul's Quaker upbringing, long seen as the spark for her commitment to women's rights, is shown here as necessary, but not sufficient to motivate her later devotion to the equality of women. However, her childhood among the Friends did forge crucial aspects of Paul's selfhood. Her political zeal developed out of years of education and exploration, notably her involvement with the infamous British suffragists, Emmeline and Christabel Pankhurst. The authors demonstrate how Paul's work for the Pankhursts honed her instincts and skills. They identify Paul's sense of historical moment as vital to her embrace of a leadership role, a decision which largely subsumed her private with her public life. As a leader, Alice Paul wedded courage, resourcefulness and self-mastery. In 1913, she reinvigorated the American campaign for a constitutional suffrage amendment by capturing the suffrage narrative and, in the next seven years, dominated that campaign and drove it to victory with bold, controversial action. The book analyzes Paul's charisma and leadership qualities, highlighting her dealings with her most important political adversaries, Woodrow Wilson and rival suffrage leader Carrie Chapman Catt. Paul's leadership style both energized and frustrated allies and opponents, as well as historians. This biography applies new research to the persistent questions about Alice Paul and her legacy.

In Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass, Lewis Carroll created fantastic worlds that continue to delight and trouble readers of all ages today. What is often overlooked, however, is that Carroll conceived his Alice books during the 1860s, a moment of intense intellectual upheaval, as new scientific, linguistic, educational, and mathematical ideas flourished around him, in Oxford, and far beyond. Alice in Space reveals the contexts within which the Alice books first lived, bringing back the zest to jokes lost over time and poignancy to hidden references. Gillian Beer explores Carroll's work through the speculative gaze of Alice, for whom no authority is unquestioned and everything can speak. Parody and Punch, evolutionary debates, philosophical dialogues, educational works for children, math and logic, manners and rituals, dream theory and childhood studies all fueled the fireworks. While much has been written about Carroll's biography and his influence on children's literature, Beer convincingly shows him at play in the spaces of Victorian cultural and intellectual life, drawing on then-current controversies, reading prodigiously across many fields, and writing on multiple levels to please both children and adults in different ways. With a welcome combination of learning and lightness, Beer reminds us that Carroll's books are essentially about curiosity, its risks and pleasures. Along the way, Alice in Space shares Alice's exceptional ability to spark curiosity in us, too.
