This text studies the ecology of animals, plants and their habitats and promotes awareness of pressing environmental issues. The eight informative chapters deliver environmental messages and supply insights into the natural world and the ecologists who investigate its many mysteries. From a concerned ecological stance, the authors show that human relationships with other organisms and the environment is always complex and can be exhilarating, inspiring, humorous and irritating, depending on perspectives and circumstances. They provide a variety of examples from the natural world in hopes of making readers of all ages more compassionate, more tolerant and more sensitive to other living organisms and their interrelationships. The book celebrates the intrinsic worth of all plants and animals in order to motivate people in a unified effort to preserve the Earth's rich array of life forms. The preservation of the integrity of our planet's biodiversity is, the authors illustrate, critical to our own survival.

Anna Maria van Schurman was widely regarded as the most erudite woman in seventeenth-century Europe. As “the Star of Utrecht,” she was active in a network of learning that included the most renowned scholars of her time. Known for her extensive learning and her defense of the education of women, she was the first woman to sit in on lectures at a university in the Netherlands and to advocate that women be admitted into universities. She was proficient in fourteen languages, including Latin, Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, Syriac, Aramaic, Persian, Samaritan, and Ethiopian, as well as several vernacular European languages. This volume presents in translation a remarkable collection of her letters and poems—many of which were previously unpublished—that span almost four decades of her life, from 1631 to 1669.

We've Remembered Our First Freedom, Until Now.Religious freedom is one of the most important freedoms that the American experiment has given the world. Sadly, many have forgotten not only the importance of our first freedom but also that its roots are founded in biblical principles that call us to champion religious freedom for all. As a result of inattention, the religious liberties we take for granted are now being challenged. Our response at this critical time in history will have a significant and lasting impact on the direction of the United States. In Set Free, editors Art Lindsley and Anne R. Bradley explore the biblical underpinnings of religious freedom and how those biblical roots have been understood throughout history, the essential role of religious freedom in promoting human flourishing, and why this precious freedom must be restored at all costs, for people of all faiths, not just our own. With contributions from Christian theologians, historians, and public policy analysts, Set Free provides readers with a firm understanding of Christianity's unique and essential contribution to religious freedom.

The cool temperate waters of our British and Irish seas contain an astonishing 6% of the world's algal species, more than 600 different seaweeds, and yet most divers, snorkelers and rockpoolers can put names to only a handful of them. The first edition of Seaweeds of Britain and Ireland has proved invaluable to an enormous number of people, not just volunteer Seasearch divers and snorkellers, and this eagerly-awaited second edition will no doubt prove to be equally as popular. The aim of this book is to introduce the reader to the wonderful marine environment around Britain and Ireland, and improve identification to the wealth of seaweeds so often overlooked. Features of the new edition include: * Over 230 species described in detail with colour photographs, information on size, habitat and distribution maps. * Over 50 new species, many with information on how to identify to species level using microscopic features. * Key distinguishing features and areas of identity confusion highlighted. * Colour and form used to group species and aid identification using dichotomous keys. * Details of life histories and reproductive processes for the main seaweed groups.* Both scientific and English names used for species and groups. * A glossary of common and specialised terms.
