An Historical Geography of Europe 450 B.C.–A.D. 1330

An Historical Geography of Europe 450 B.C.–A.D. 1330

Normal J. G. Pounds

Cambridge University Press

Every age has its own geography, separate and distinct from the geographies of earlier and succeeding ages. This 1973 book seeks to examine the complex of natural and man-made features which have provided the background of history, influencing its course and themselves modified by human action. Professor Pounds examines five short periods, each of which is not only relatively well documented, but also important in the climax of a civilisation. In a sense, each represents the climax of a longer period of historical development. The aim is to survey the whole of Europe for each of the chosen periods, not merely those areas which have been highlighted by documents and events. Northern Europe in the age of Pericles and eastern Europe in all periods are, for example, examined, alongside the better-known Mediterranean region, France and the Rhineland. Considerable use is made of maps, all specially prepared for this book.

If one man could change the world, would you believe in him, if he believed in himself? Would you follow him and believe in his heart and courage to pull you through your hard times and tribulations? If you believe in him then you should believe in yourself because we are all one and born leaders till our last breath. Two minds are more powerful than one, and a nation is stronger than two. So with these rules i give to you as a blessing to you. May my poetry go to your heats, and through your veins may we change the world so we all live forever and the world know our names. There's a leader inside you.

Why Me? Who hasn't said that at one time or another? We all say 'why me' in certain situations or when we are experiencing certain emotions. The Y-Mee doll, introduced to the world in August 2008, was the first in a line of products that attempts to help in those 'why me' moments. Now, Y-Mee's wisdom has been written in a book that goes farther in helping those in 'why me' situations. Y-Mee's A-B-C Book of Emotions takes a tongue in cheek look at various emotions from A=Angry to Z=Zealous and everything in between. Each letter and each emotion gives a unique definition and a plan of action to deal with whatever the emotion may be. Y-Mee's are standing beside each letter to provide support, guidance and a smile. Y-Mee's A-B-C Book of Emotions is a short book, designed to be small, informative, and helpful yet full of humor.

A bold reassessment of what caused the Late Bronze Age collapseIn 1177 B.C., marauding groups known only as the "Sea Peoples" invaded Egypt. The pharaoh's army and navy managed to defeat them, but the victory so weakened Egypt that it soon slid into decline, as did most of the surrounding civilizations. After centuries of brilliance, the civilized world of the Bronze Age came to an abrupt and cataclysmic end. Kingdoms fell like dominoes over the course of just a few decades. No more Minoans or Mycenaeans. No more Trojans, Hittites, or Babylonians. The thriving economy and cultures of the late second millennium B.C., which had stretched from Greece to Egypt and Mesopotamia, suddenly ceased to exist, along with writing systems, technology, and monumental architecture. But the Sea Peoples alone could not have caused such widespread breakdown. How did it happen? In this major new account of the causes of this "First Dark Ages," Eric Cline tells the gripping story of how the end was brought about by multiple interconnected failures, ranging from invasion and revolt to earthquakes, drought, and the cutting of international trade routes. Bringing to life the vibrant multicultural world of these great civilizations, he draws a sweeping panorama of the empires and globalized peoples of the Late Bronze Age and shows that it was their very interdependence that hastened their dramatic collapse and ushered in a dark age that lasted centuries.A compelling combination of narrative and the latest scholarship, 1177 B.C. sheds new light on the complex ties that gave rise to, and ultimately destroyed, the flourishing civilizations of the Late Bronze Age—and that set the stage for the emergence of classical Greece.
