Washington School--there's no AC, only one space for school activities, and the money for extracurricular programs is getting cut. Desperate to save Maria's beloved debate team, the crew start a petition to grab the attention of the local community and show they deserve to have the same opportunities as everyone else. But when news of the petition reaches the school board, Simon must face his fears once again. Susan B. Anthony: Biography of a Rebel, Crusader, and Humanitarian of the Women’s Rights and Feminist Movements
Alma Lutz's outstanding biography of Susan B. Anthony is revered for its descriptive power, attention to detail and historical significance to the women's Suffragette movement. In this superb biography, we receive passionate accounts of the major turning points in Susan B. Anthony's life. The people who were her role models as a young woman, such as the articulate anti-slavery author Frederick B. Douglass, receive attention. Anthony's vociferous opposition to slavery led her to campaign before and during the U.S. Civil War for its abolition: her resolute spirit is well-documented from an early age: even as a teenager, Susan B. Anthony leafleted and campaigned for emancipation. As a leading figure in women's rights during the 19th and early 20th centuries, Susan B. Anthony was responsible for forming and organising several groups instrumental to women eventually gaining the vote in the United States. A tireless campaigner and speaker, Anthony would average between 75 and 100 speeches each year.

An Historical Geography of Europe 450 B.C.–A.D. 1330

An Historical Geography of Europe 450 B.C.–A.D. 1330

Normal J. G. Pounds

Cambridge University Press
1976
pokkari
Every age has its own geography, separate and distinct from the geographies of earlier and succeeding ages. This 1973 book seeks to examine the complex of natural and man-made features which have provided the background of history, influencing its course and themselves modified by human action. Professor Pounds examines five short periods, each of which is not only relatively well documented, but also important in the climax of a civilisation. In a sense, each represents the climax of a longer period of historical development. The aim is to survey the whole of Europe for each of the chosen periods, not merely those areas which have been highlighted by documents and events. Northern Europe in the age of Pericles and eastern Europe in all periods are, for example, examined, alongside the better-known Mediterranean region, France and the Rhineland. Considerable use is made of maps, all specially prepared for this book.

B.A. Santamaria was one of the most controversial Australians of our time, his sphere of influence ranging across the nation's political and social landscape. An ardent anti-Communist and devout Catholic, Santamaria was fiercely intelligent and a natural leader, polarising the community into loyal followers and committed opponents. Spanning sixty years this collection of letters shows facets of Santamaria's personality and activities that have not previously been disclosed. They are both personal and professional and in them he speaks frankly on matters of the state, the Church and family and he is revealed as a person more subtle in his views than his public persona would suggest. His correspondents ranged from prominent politicians, including Malcolm Fraser, Bill Hayden and Clyde Cameron, religious leaders, including Archbishops Mannix and Pell,to influential media and social commentators such as Kerry Packer and Phillip Adams. In the 1940s Santamaria created an anti-Communist organisation, the Movement in Australia, and these letters reveal that he also operated it for decades throughout Asia. He was a keyfigure in the tumultuous split in the 1950s of the Australian Labour Party and subsequently had much influence as a public commentator on his television program Pointof View and his weekly column in The Australian.Santamaria had a strong social conscience and spent much of his time helping the under-privileged, and although he began as an advocate and champion of the Catholic Church,he spent much of his last decades opposing some of its activities.By the 1990s B.A. Santamaria was the only person still active in politics who had been involved in public life before World War II and in the immediate postwar years. The letters offer a rare glimpse into a mind that was preoccupied for more than six decades with world events and ideological controversies.
