I "Trollkarlarnas tid" möter vi fyra högst olika tänkare och person­ligheter, med högst olika livshistorier: Ernst Cassirer, Martin Heidegger, Ludwig Wittgenstein och Walter Benjamin. Med första världskriget och Weimarrepublikens kaotiska tid som bakgrund väver Eilenberger samman deras filosofiska strävanden till ett fascinerande grupporträtt. Cassirer med rötter i nykantianismen fullbordade sitt mäktiga verk "De symbo­liska formernas filosofi" och Heidegger trädde fram som autenticitetstänkare med "Vara och tid". Wittgenstein geniförklarades i Cambridge efter att ha utgivit "Tractatus logico-philosophicus", men drog sig tillbaka som grundskollärare på den österrikiska landsbygden. Benjamin fick sin akademiska karriär avbruten med underkännandet av docentavhandlingen "Det tyska sorge­spelets ursprung" och försörjde sig som fri skribent i Berlin. Slutåret för Eilenbergers berättelse är 1929. Då disputerade Wittgenstein genom Bertrand Russels försorg på "Tractatus" i Cambridge. I Davos möttes Cassirer och Heidegger på en filosofikonferens, inbjudna för att föreläsa över temat ”Vad är människan?”. Detta skulle bli en kontrovers om filosofins grundfrågor av sådan betydelse att, som Eilenberger säger, framtida idéhistoriker skulle ha tvingats uppfinna den i efterhand om den inte hade ägt rum. At Nogales the men and women split, the women are kidnapped by Yakuza trafficking gangs and made into forced sex workers in the LA underground. The men are arrested and are processed into the crushing US prison system where gangs are a way of protection. Those same gangs control the streets into which they are eventually released. That there is even the possibility of a happy ending in the grip of such sweeping forces is a remarkable testament to the redeeming power of the human spirit.
