Matthew Briel examines, for the first time, the appropriation and modification of Thomas Aquinas's understanding of providence by fifteenth-century Greek Orthodox theologian Gennadios Scholarios. Briel investigates the intersection of Aquinas's theology, the legacy of Greek patristic and later theological traditions, and the use of Aristotle's philosophy by Latin and Greek Christian thinkers in the thirteenth to fifteenth centuries. A Greek Thomist reconsiders our current understanding of later Byzantine theology by reconfiguring the construction of what constitutes "orthodoxy" within a pro- or anti-Western paradigm. The fruit of this appropriation of Aquinas enriches extant sources for historical and contemporary assessments of Orthodox theology. Moreover, Scholarios's grafting of Thomas onto the later Greek theological tradition changes the account of grace and freedom in Thomistic moral theology. The particular kind of Thomism that Scholarios develops avoids the later vexing issues in the West of the de auxiliis controversy by replacing the Augustinian theology of grace with the highly developed Greek theological concept of synergy. The specific concern in What We Hold in Trust comes to this: the Catholic university that sees its principal purpose in terms of the active life, of career, and of changing the world, undermines the contemplative and more deep-rooted purpose of the university. If a university adopts the language of technical and social change as its main and exclusive purpose, it will weaken the deeper roots of the university’s liberal arts and Catholic mission. The language of the activist, of changing the world through social justice, equality and inclusion, or of the technician through market-oriented incentives, plays an important role in university life. We need to change the world for the better and universities play an important role, but both the activist and technician will be co-opted by our age of hyper-activity and technocratic organizations if there is not first a contemplative outlook on the world that receives reality rather than constructs it.To address this need for roots What We Hold in Trust unfolds in four chapters that will demonstrate how essential it is for the faculty, administrators, and trustees of Catholic universities to think philosophically and theologically (Chapter One), historically (Chapter Two) and institutionally (Chapters Three and Four). What we desperately need today are leaders in Catholic universities who understand the roots of the institutions they serve, who can wisely order the goods of the university, who know what is primary and what is secondary, and who can distinguish fads and slogans from authentic reform. We need leaders who are in touch with their history and have a love for tradition, and in particular for the Catholic tradition. Without this vision, our universities may grow in size, but shrink in purpose. They may be richer but not wiser.

Mobilität ist eine der wichtigsten Ressourcen, die wesentlich über Selbständigkeit und Autonomie im Alter entscheidet und somit Lebensqualität und Wohlbefinden bestimmt. Einschränkungen der Mobilität sind sichere und sehr frühe Anzeichen von krankhaft veränderten und beschleunigten Alterungsprozessen sowie Krankheiten im Alter mit schwerwiegenden Folgen für die betroffenen Patienten (Verlust von Fähigkeiten, Erkrankung, Pflegebedürftigkeit, Institutionalisierung und Tod) sowie entsprechenden personellen und finanziellen Belastungen der Gesundheits- und Sozialsicherungssysteme in Deutschland.Aufgrund funktioneller Veränderungen von Sensorik, Motorik und Kognition im Alter kann es zu Einbußen und Verlust von Mobilität mit weitreichenden Folgen kommen. Deshalb ist die Sicherung bzw. der Erhalt von Mobilität im Alter eine wichtige Schlüsselkomponente erfolgreichen Alter(n)s. Ein wesentlicher Teil von Mobilität ist die Teilnahme am Straßenverkehr; sei es durch den Gebrauch des eigenen PKWs, durch Nutzung eines Fahrrads, zu Fuß oder die Nutzung der Angebote des öffentlichen Personennahverkehrs. Statistische Auswertungen zeigen, dass ältere Menschen zunehmend in Unfälle verwickelt sind. Die demografische Entwicklung spricht dafür, dass die Problematik der Verkehrseignung im Alter zunimmt. Auch wenn die Gesamtanzahl der Fälle nicht sehr groß ist, verbucht sie damit erhebliches menschliches Leid bei den Betroffenen (seien sie Verletzte oder Unfallfahrer). Welche Einflüsse Alter(n)s-assoziierter Veränderungen auf Mobilität, Teilnahme am Straßenverkehr und Fahrkompetenz haben, wird in diesem Band der Reihe Praxiswissen Gerontologie und Geriatrie kompakt für Berufsgruppen aufbereitet, die direkt an der Versorgung älterer Menschen beteiligt sind. Das Ziel ist, die Reichweite und Vielschichtigkeit des Themenkomplexes aufzuzeigen, um auf dieser Basis im Team zu überlegen, welche Maßnahmen angezeigt sind, wenn sichere Teilnahme am Straßenverkehr gefährdet oder gar schon nicht mehr möglich ist.
