This book presents the basic scientific computing methods for the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) as they occur in engineering problems. Programming codes in Fortran and C are included for each problem. Opening with the definition of the programming environment for the solving of PDE systems, it then addresses in detail the programming of the model problem by the finite element method. Efficiency, compact storage pre-conditioning and mesh adaption are also presented. General elliptic problems and evolution problems are then dealt with. Finally, topics related to other numerical methods, algorithms for parallel computing and multi processor computers are detailed. An integrated software package which illustrates the featured programs of PDEs is available on the Internet via anonymous FTP. The methods presented have applications in numerous fields of engineering including shape optimisation, nuclear safety, heat transfer, acoustics, mechanics of fluids and elasticity, and are also relevant to other areas such as pollution, meteorology, biology, etc.

Triumph of the Fatherland

The East German uprising of 1989 was not a male revolution. Indeed, one of the most significant aspects of the fall of East Germany, compared to that of other East European nations, was the presence of women demanding a political role in the newly emerging social order. As one slogan proclaimed, "Without Women There Is No State."Yet despite the determination of these women--and of West German feminist groups--to help shape the future of the German state, their influence remained, in the end, very limited. In Triumph of the Fatherland, political scientist Brigitte Young draws on in-depth interviews, archival sources, newspapers, and her own observations from 1989 to 1991 to study the goals, strategies, and eventual fate of the German women's movements during this tumultuous period. Young focuses on the relationship between the state and its citizenry, outlining the mobilization of women in four states: the East German and West German states before unification; the "stateless state" in East Germany after the collapse of the Wall, and the West German state during unification. Ultimately she finds that the political opportunity structures opened during the "stateless state" closed again with unification, resulting in what Young calls "double gender marginalization."Brigitte Young is Associate Professor, Department of Political Science, Otto-Suhr-Institute, Free University Berlin, Germany.

"You have lived many times" is a non-fiction book representing a personal journey of discovery in the field of Past Life Regression under hypnosis. The book is based on the idea that the soul is eternal and travels through many lives in order to learn and teach lessons and ultimately evolve."You have lived many times" introduces the idea that we are able to recall memories from past lives because of the brain's structure and the way it functions, as well as the memory imprint of individual cells. Therefore, the book invites the reader inside of the human brain and hypothesizes how individuals are able to remember memories from the present life and even from other previous existences that our soul incarnated to. The book also introduces the idea that the connection between our spirit, which represents our own individuality, and the eternal soul can be related to our energetic system connected to the universal energy. "You have lived many times" emphasizes that karma and the law of attraction are tools available and necessary for evolvement. The book is a reminder that our consciousness and mindfulness are platforms for evolution; therefore it touches such concepts as mindfulness, consciousness, meditation, and major versus advanced chakra systems."You have lived many times" focuses on several real past life regressions cases, recorded in the author's Hypnotherapy practice. The clients' regressions, some face-to-face, others group regressions or even distance regressions, are conducted under deep hypnosis.

WE HAVE MET IN PAST LIVES is based on the idea that our souls are eternal and reincarnate in order to learn karmic lessons and to ultimately evolve. WE HAVE MET IN PAST LIVES focuses on several real past life regression cases, conducted under hypnosis in the author's hypnotherapy practice. Each case highlights the fact that our systems of cohabitation and interdependence recognize homogeneous soul group structures that may have coexisted in other lives; therefore it may be possible to live at the present with people we have met in past lives. WE HAVE MET IN PAST LIVES accentuates the concept of 'soul groups' that continuously reincarnate with the same group of people; each member of the group playing a different role in each lifetime, and having specific connections depending on the karmic lessons each soul has decided to accomplish.

A rich, vibrantly illustrated account of the history and sources of manga As contemporary as this graphic art form may appear to readers outside of Japan, manga has, in fact, deep roots in Japanese culture, drawing on centuries-old artistic traditions: traces can be found in seventh century temple paintings, folding screens decorated with comic characters, and painted medieval Emakimono scrolls. The more familiar manga comics of today echo similar themes, both light and serious, and draw on narrative forms present in the sagas and skits from Japan’s rich cultural heritage. This book spans the history of manga in all its splendour and diversity: from Hokusai’s seminal Manga in 1814 to the onset of the gekiga in the 1950s; from the landmark Astro Boy of Tezuka Ozamu to Lady Oscar, Riyoko Ikedan’s shôjo manga aimed at young girls; from samurai sagas to the more alternative productions of the review Garo; and from the demons that populate the works of Mizuki Shigeru to the latest creations from Jirô Taniguchi, each period is covered in detail. One Thousand Years of Manga is both a rich documentary account and a visual delight with over 400 illustrations, many never before seen outside of Japan. A thorough exploration of the sources of manga, this book makes it possible to understand how this mass-produced cultural artifact – aimed at adults as much as at children – has developed into an essential facet of Japanese culture that is now enjoyed across the globe.

Empress Elisabeth of Austria, known to her family as 'Sisi', belongs to a famous love story of European royalty. In 1853 the Emperor Franz Josef, the most eligible bachelor in Europe, fell in love with her at first sight when she was 15. They were married the next year. On the surface, it was a fairy-tale marriage, all the more poignant, with hindsight, because her tragic death augured the twilight years of the Habsburg Empire. First published in 1988, Brigitte Hamann's definitive biography tells Elisabeth's story from her birth into Bavarian nobility to her assassination at the hands of an Italian anarchist. In her lifetime she was idolised solely for her grace and beauty; but Hamann shows us a stronger character, bitter at her marriage, seeking independence, and struggling against the powerful influence of her mother-in-law, the Archduchess Sophie.

The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy
The stakes are high, the love is forbidden, and the slow burn turns steamy in this swoony, witty, and heart-stoppingly romantic sequel to instant New York Times bestseller The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy. Osric is a member of the Fyren Order, a guild of assassins who gleefully murder for money. Aurienne is a Haelan, a scholar-healer whose Order's motto is Harm to none. Clear-cut absolutes separate them: good and bad, right and wrong, light and dark . . . Until they don't. When Osric first bribed Aurienne to heal him, he never imagined those lines would begin to blur. But every healing session draws them closer together. He finds himself developing unwanted feelings for Aurienne as her capable hands heal his body--and his heart. Aurienne's perfect life has been flung into chaos in the form of a devastatingly handsome assassin. She should be in her research lab, not illicitly healing a Fyren every full moon--nor wrestling an attraction to him that threatens to slip into something else. Things go superbly sideways when Osric and Aurienne discover more about the deadly Pox deliberately unleashed through the Tīendoms. The plague may be the work of another Order--an Order far nastier than either of them can handle. As the lines between Osric and Aurienne continue to blur, the balance between peace and war, and love and hate, trembles, shifts, and hinges on a heartbeat.
