Motorway Service Stations are places where people pass through on their way to somewhere else: somewhere better, somewhere brighter. But every traveller has a tale to tell, a story of their own, and sometimes they're not what you'd expect. Braking Distance is a glimpse beneath the surface. It brings you love, death, lust, loss, betrayal, belonging, murder, aliens and a time-travelling adventuress being chased by a dastardly foe! This collection is made up of loosely connected stories, all occurring in the same place at the same time, sprawling out across different genres, styles, perspectives and emotions. The camera swings from place to place, and over the course of eighteen short stories, builds up a picture which is surprising, exciting and strange.

Written for advanced undergraduate students, this book is a practical, in-depth guide to plant virology. Beginning with an introduction to viruses and their classification, the text describes virus pathology, including how viruses enter and move through plant cells and induce disease. Subsequent chapters discuss how viruses spread in the field and how to measure this. Throughout, the book remains reader-friendly, using focus boxes for clear, easy to obtain information, enabling students to quickly access relevant information but supply sufficient detail for advanced studies. In addition to basic information on virus biology there is an additional focus on applied virology, ideal for students undertaking agricultural studies for whom study of disease and its control is essential.
The Delirious Museum

The Delirious Museum

Calum Storrie

"The Delirious Museum" gives a new interpretation of the relationship between the museum and the city in the twenty-first century. It presents an original view of the idea of the museum, proposing that it is, or should be, both a repository of the artefacts of the past and a continuation of the city street in the present. Storrie reviews our experience of the city and of the museum taking a journey that begins in the Louvre and continues through Paris, London, Los Angeles and Las Vegas, re-imagining the possibilities for museums and their displays and reexamining the blurred boundaries between museums and the cities around them. On his quest for "The Delirious Museum", he visits the museum architecture of Soane and Libeskind, the exhibitions of Lissitsky and Kiesler and the work of such artists as Duchamp and Warhol. Calum Storrie's premise is that the museum and the city street are continuous with one another: the city is a delirious museum, overlaid with levels of history and multiple objects open to many interpretations just as museums and their contents are. In support of his theme, he draws on multiple sources, from Walter Benjamin, Daniel Libeskind & Greil Marcus through Paul Auster and Peter Ackroyd, to Stephen Bayley, Norman Bryson & Sadie Plant and takes readers on a stimulating journey through cities and museums worldwide. Serious general readers interested in urban culture, design and architecture, as well as professional architects, cultural studies and museology academics will enjoy the book, which is beautifully illustrated in black and white.
Cannibal Holocaust

Cannibal Holocaust is one of the most controversial horror films ever made. Despite not achieving huge success when it was first released, the Italian production found an audience on home video in the 1980s and became a 'must-see' for connoisseurs of extreme cinema. Indeed, Cannibal Holocaust's foremost legacy is in the United Kingdom, where it obtained its reputation as one of the most harrowing and offensive 'video nasties' - a term used to refer to a group of films deemed to be 'obscene' by the Department of Public Prosecutions. However, as the years have progressed, Cannibal Holocaust has been re-evaluated, mainly as the forefather of the 'found footage' film, and recent home video re-releases have added some valuable perspective to the onscreen violence with extensive cast and crew interviews. What is missing from this contemporary activity is contextualization of Cannibal Holocaust's style, affirmation and discussion of its locations and any extensive discourse about its representation of third world inhabitants (i.e. as 'primitives').In addition, and also amiss from previous dialogue on the production, is that Cannibal Holocaust can be seen as one of the key post-Vietnam films. It is the spectre of war - and an explicit warning about Western involvement in civil conflict - which progresses Deodato's story of jungle adventurers in peril. By approaching the film from a more formalist position, this Devil's Advocate provides an insightful discussion of this groundbreaking film.

Children of the Black House is a fascinating glimpse into life on the Hebridean island of Lewis from the closing years of the nineteenth century up to the 1950s. Calum Ferguson employs an unusual narrative technique, drawing on his mother Mairead's reminiscences, and presenting her experiences and conversation in the first person. This is a fascinating account of a culture in transition; it records and preserves for twenty-first-century readers traditions and ways of life which have now gone for ever. Also this remarkable memoir is a treasury of personal recollections, traditional tales, and songs. It is illustrated throughout with photographs of Mairead, her family and friends.

In June 1940, my father joined the 9th Battalion of the Royal Norfolk Regiment; he was 17. Trooper 7952180 hit the Normandy beaches on June 9th 1944 - my mission: to live his war again. The plan was simple. On my return from a road trip to France, I would write a book about his exploits, not for grand publication but for anyone in my family who cared. To retrace his journey through North West Europe, I put myself into his Tankie boots and hoped to combine historical facts with photographs, war diaries and stories from his war years. Trapped inside his body, I find myself driving a tank in Normandy and then across the battlefields of NW Europe from Sword Beach to Hamburg. And there is another problem. I must survive like he did to return to my safe, modern-day life, and I can only do this by reliving his war again. Dates and places are accurate, and some names have been changed, but my imagination was needed to fill in the gaps. About the writerI am a retired, beer-drinking, Prog rock-loving Munro-bagger who lives on the marshes in North Norfolk. In my sensible business life as an ex-UK and Ireland country leader, I worked 35 years for a global company making detergent. For too long, I harboured the desire to tell a story about a remarkable man who lived unremarkably. COVID allowed this to happen. 'Me, My Father And I' is my attempt to write a WW2 book about his adventures in the 44th RTR and a memoir about parts of our life together. With no previous writing experience except business reporting, probably more fiction than fact, this project took me on a journey of discovery I should have completed many years ago

Post-Weird: Fragmentation, Community, and the Decline of the Mainstream is an ambitious look at how communities form when old forms of authority and meaning seem to be collapsing around us. This book goes beyond the fraying of contemporary American culture to ask how communities that used to be considered “fringe,” for better or worse, come together. Dr. Matheson examines far-flung groups from Appalachian serpent-handling churches to Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists, pro-anorexia Internet forums to reactionary pseudoscientists, finding consistent parallels amidst their diversity. The key trend he identifies is anti-rhetorical discourse: the insistence that the symbols shared by each community represent a hidden truth that cannot be questioned or interpreted but is revealed through signs-words, images, videos, and texts. Against these rigid worldviews, Dr. Matheson calls for a revival of the art of rhetoric, not just as a set of techniques, but as a creative, curious orientation towards the world in all of its ambiguity and uncertainty.
