Managing Professionals? Don't!

Managing Professionals? Don't!

Cees Hoedemakers; Mathieu Weggeman

The powerhouses of our companies today are made up of increasing numbers of professionals. The number of companies that would describe themselves as knowledge-intensive is also increasing - think of R&D labs, hi-tech, IT, media, business support, health and educational organizations. Managers tend to think that these new organizations and their staff must be managed like before. But to do so can create more problems than it might solve.Professionals are for the most part already motivated and do not need to be managed. They have studied many years to be able to do their job. Frustrating their enthusiasm by steering and controlling them can restrict their ability to perform to the best of their capability. In any such organization the avoidance of forms, meaningless report writing, and restrictive rules and procedures, will lead to much greater productivity and improved quality. Professionals should be trusted in advance and given room to exercise their discipline at a state of the art level. This book is about the new "servant leadership" the kind of leadership required for these companies. It explains the characteristics and peculiarities of professionals in the workplace. It emphasizes that their most important production factor is their knowledge, and their most difficult task is innovation. The role of the manager is to create the environment in which both of these traits can flourish, and thus to help professional organizations achieve their collective ambitions.

Sixteen culture makers who are Zeitzeugen (contemporary witnesses) of the COVID-19 pandemic sketch how things can be different in the future. Their visions for the future came about as a reaction to the disruption of their plans for 2020, and have one thing in common: the ambition to change and to widen the limits of our imagination. The visions and recipes of these writers, academics, philosophers, singers, visual artists, theatre makers and designers working in the Netherlands and Germany, paint a heterogeneous picture. They develop through themes such as real utopias, sustainability, the new domesticity, and the role of cultural institutions in our society. This collection is flavoured with the food recipes that every maker has contributed. The menu ranges from eating earth to corona ice cream, from French toast to Mushrooms at the end of the world, and tastes like more. Nonlinear Time Series Analysis: Methods And Applications

Methods of nonlinear time series analysis are discussed from a dynamical systems perspective on the one hand, and from a statistical perspective on the other. After giving an informal overview of the theory of dynamical systems relevant to the analysis of deterministic time series, time series generated by nonlinear stochastic systems and spatio-temporal dynamical systems are considered. Several statistical methods for the analysis of nonlinear time series are presented and illustrated with applications to physical and physiological time series.

This new edition of an immensely useful book follows the same proven format as its predecessors, updates its analysis of case law with hundreds of new decisions by the courts of the European Union (EU), and thus remains the quickest source of reference for practitioners working with EU State aid matters. Following a highly organized sequence of subject headings, it presents extracts from all judgments and orders of both the Court of Justice and the General Court of the EU on the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) rules on State aids. The book covers the relevant case law of both courts. There is additional material on many subjects, among which the concept of State aid, direct taxation and the State aid provisions, particularly on tax rulings, advantages for undertakings, selectivity, forms of State aid, procedures and unlawful aids. With this book, practitioners will quickly find relevant paragraphs and full citations regarding all issues raised by Articles 107-109 TFEU, including the following and much more: territorial scope of State aids; Article 107(1) European Commission and World Trade Organization Agreements; conditions for categorizing a national measure as State aid; free movement of goods; undertakings; private versus public investment; justification of selective measures; interstate trade and competition; tax measures; restructuring aids; procedural aspects; and locus standi of trade associations. In many areas, the extracts relate to points of the judgments which are not or only partially covered in official summaries. For accessibility of this case law, this updated edition of the preeminent analysis of EU State aid case law has no peers. Practitioners in this key area of EU competition law will find this book indispensable.

The how and why of successful reputation building is what this book is about. What specific actions must companies take to build a positive reputation in the market place? How can a company measure the success of its attempts to build a positive reputation in the market place as well.

Economic conditions are said to affect election outcomes, but past research has produced unstable and contradictory findings. This book argues that these problems are caused by the failure to take account of electoral competition between parties. A research strategy to correct this problem is designed and applied to investigate effects of economic conditions on (individual) voter choices and (aggregate) election outcomes over 42 elections in 15 countries. It shows that economic conditions exert small effects on individual party preferences, which can have large consequences for election outcomes. In countries where responsibility for economic policy is clear, voters vote retrospectively and reward or punish incumbent parties - although in coalition systems smaller government parties often gain at the expense of the largest party when economic conditions deteriorate. Where clarity of responsibility for economic policy is less clear, voters vote more prospectively on the basis of expected party policies.

This volume offers insights from modelling measures of parental involvement and their relationship with student reading literacy across countries, exploring and incorporating cultural differences. This is a significant contribution to a field where cross-cultural comparisons from a triangulated perspective are sparse. For readers interested in exploring the relationship between parental involvement and student attainment, the literature review provides a useful starting point. Meanwhile, for the more methodologically interested reader, this report presents state-of-the art ways to identify and model cultural differential item functioning in ILSA, illustrating the extent to which the parental involvement construct may be affected by cultural differences and how this may affect the outcomes of cross cultural comparisons. The framework is generic and should provide a solid foundation for future ILSA practices and secondary analyses. International large scale assessment (ILSA) studies like the IEA s Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) provide valuable data, containing both student achievement data and contextual background data from schools, teachers, students and parents for over 41 countries."
