Balzac likens the hero of one of his short stories to "Moliere's Don Juan, Goethe's Faust, Byron's Manfred, Maturin's Melmoth-great allegorical figures drawn by the greatest men of genius in Europe." "But what is 'Melmoth'? Why is HE classed as 'a great allegorical figure'?" exclaimed many a surprised reader. Few had perused-few know at this day-the terrible story of Melmoth the Wanderer, half man, half devil, who has bartered away his soul for the glory of power and knowledge, and, repenting of his bargain, tries again and again to persuade some desperate human to change places with him- penetrates to the refuge of misery, the death chamber, even the madhouse, seeking one in such utter agony as to accept his help, and take his curse-but ever fails. Why this extraordinary tale, told with wild and compelling sweep, has remained so deep in oblivion, appears immediately on a glance at the original.

Private Charles Smith had been dead for close to a century when Jonathan Hart discovered the soldier's small diary in the Baldwin Collection at the Toronto Public Library. The diary's first entry was marked 28 June 1915. After some research, Hart discovered that Charles Smith was an Anglo-Canadian, born in Kent, and that this diary was almost all that remained of this forgotten man, who like so many soldiers from ordinary families had lost his life in the First World War. In reading the diary, Hart discovered a voice full of life, and the presence of a rhythm, a cadence that urged him to bring forth the poetry in Smith's words. Unforgetting Private Charles Smith is the poetic setting of the words in Smith's diary, work undertaken by Hart with the intention of remembering Smith's life rather than commemorating his death.

Every day, both the American press and international media outlets are inundated with the latest news about Donald Trump. Everything from White House press briefings to the president's tweets are scrutinized for hidden meaning and context. The press is always in search of the next big, sensationalist story. Trump always delivers. Style, however, doesn't trump substance. As Charles DeWinter, MSc, MBA, discusses in his new political guide, Lock Him Up , it is vital to look past the fluff of the president's social media presence and understand how his key policies will affect both America and the global community for generations to come. He discusses the truth behind all the "buzz" of the administration, the key figures in Trump's entourage and their plans for the future, the realities of a "posttruth" world, the potential of a war with China, the historical precedents for Trump's policies, the angry underbelly of American society, and the importance of stopping America from turning into a "casino economy." DeWinter strays from the opinions of the mainstream media. In the months leading up to the election, many didn't take Trump seriously. DeWinter instead urges you to reflect on the serious ramifications of the Trump administration's platform and promises.
