Mark of Ascension

The first book of Joseph Kim and Christopher Boom's Mark of Ascension Series, set in a futuristic United States, paints a beautiful picture of a corrupted society and one character's struggle for greatness. "The group of five boys held the defenseless little girl by the arms, digging a sharp rock into her collarbone. As they carved at the distinct wolf-shaped tattoo, I heard her terrified cries ring out through the city, and the image of hundreds of people chanting for Charles' murder flashed through my mind. 'You should see what they do to people like us in the Core Sectors. I heard they literally use us Bastards as slaves, ' a distant voice echoed, and I finally saw the world for what it was." In the United Republic, a post-modern country born to replace the United States, the social hierarchy is everything. The elite of society live in luxury and run the country while "Bastards," children born unsanctioned by the law, are treated like filth. Ethan Holfstras is one of those "Bastards," and even his early friendship with Hannah Kamiya, a revered young genius, failed to save him from society's condemnation and criticism. But just several weeks after he graduates from the Academy, he is called to Camp Daedalus, a military camp of unknown purpose. For weeks, he is isolated: away from Hannah, away from the Sectors, and away from society. When he comes back, he is implanted back into the hierarchy, but not as a Bastard. How dangerous is it?More than you can imagine. What's at stake? The country, and the life of everyone he loves.

The Taiwan Voter examines the critical role ethnic and national identities play in politics, utilizing the case of Taiwan. Although elections there often raise international tensions, and have led to military demonstrations by China, no scholarly books have examined how Taiwan’s voters make electoral choices in a dangerous environment. Critiquing the conventional interpretation of politics as an ideological battle between liberals and conservatives, The Taiwan Voter demonstrates in Taiwan the party system and voters’ responses are shaped by one powerful determinant of national identity—the China factor.Taiwan’s electoral politics draws international scholarly interest because of the prominent role of ethnic and national identification. While in most countries the many tangled strands of competing identities are daunting for scholarly analysis, in Taiwan the cleavages are powerful and limited in number, so the logic of interrelationships among issues, partisanship, and identity are particularly clear. The Taiwan Voter unites experts to investigate the ways in which social identities, policy views, and partisan preferences intersect and influence each other. These novel findings have wide applicability to other countries, and will be of interest to a broad range of social scientists interested in identity politics.

"O where are the sympathies of Christians for the slave and where are their exertions for their liberation? . . . It seems as if the church were asleep."David Ingraham, 1839In 2015, the historian Chris Momany helped discover a manuscript that had been forgotten in a storage closet at Adrian College in Michigan. He identified it as the journal of a nineteenth-century Christian abolitionist and missionary, David Ingraham. As Momany and a fellow historian Doug Strong pored over the diary, they realized that studying this document could open new conversations for twenty-first-century Christians to address the reality of racism today. They invited a multiracial team of fourteen scholars to join in, thus launching the Dialogue on Race and Faith Project.Awakening to Justice presents the groundbreaking work of these scholars. In addition to reflecting on Ingraham's journal, chapters also explore the life and writings of two of Ingraham's Black colleagues, James Bradley and Nancy Prince. Appendixes feature writings by all three abolitionists so readers can engage the primary sources directly.Through considering connections between the revivalist, holiness, and abolitionist movements; the experiences of enslaved and freed people; abolitionists' spiritual practices; various tactics used by abolitionists; and other themes, the authors offer insight and hope for Christians concerned about racial justice. They highlight how Christians associated with Charles Finney's style of revivalism formed intentional, countercultural communities such as Oberlin College to be exemplars of interracial cooperation and equality.Christians have all too often compromised with racism throughout history, but that's not the whole story. Hearing the prophetic witness of revivalist social justice efforts in the nineteenth century can provide a fresh approach to today's conversations about race and faith in the church.
