Economic and Social Integration

Economic and Social Integration

Dagmar Schiek

Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd

This well-researched book analyzes the positioning of EU constitutional law towards economic and social integration by contrasting liberal and socially embedded constitutionalism. The book draws on a unique content and discourse analysis of all Grand Chamber decisions on substantive EU law since May 2004. It finds the EU's 'judicial constitution' to be more nuanced and more uniform than expected. While the Court of Justice enforces the constitution of integration, it favors economic freedoms under mainly liberal paradigms, but socially embeds constitutionalism in citizenship cases. The 'judicial constitution' contrasts with EU Treaties after the Treaty of Lisbon in that their new value base enhances European social integration. However, the Treaties too seem contradictory in that they do not expand the EU's competence regime accordingly. In the light of these contradictions, Dagmar Schiek proposes a 'constitution of social governance': the Court and EU institutions should encourage steps towards social integration at EU level to be taken by transnational societal actors, rather than condemn their relevant activity. Economic and Social Integration will appeal to academics and postgraduate students in EU law, EU politics, European sociology, international relations, international law, labor law, and welfare state theory. Undergraduate students in labor law, policy advisors on EU social policy and welfare state, government departments and EU Commission departments will also find much to interest them in this book.

Blind Visionaries and Technology: Seeing Differently is an in-depth exploration of how individuals with diverse visual impairments leverage technology, and especially AI, to reimagine their perceptions of the world. Central authors Dagmar Jamieson, who lost her sight due to cone-rod dystrophy, and Mark Rawleigh, diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa, provide foundational narratives informed by their personal journeys, establishing context for insightful contributions from a diverse group of accomplished experts, each with unique visual impairments.Structured as a collaborative volume, the book begins with a foreword by playwright Eugene Stickland, who discusses his experiences living with prosopagnosia (face blindness). This is followed by chapters from pioneering professionals, including Ashley King, a legally blind actor and playwright who advocates for accessibility and inclusive representation in the arts; Jonathan Sieswerda, whose congenital visual impairment drives his exploration of technology's dual potential to empower and isolate; and Dr. John-Ross Rizzo, alongside colleague Dr. Giles Hamilton-Fletcher, whose groundbreaking research on Choroideremia and sensory substitution informs advancements in wearable assistive technology.Additional contributions include Maria Ramirez-Emmott, who draws from her experiences as a partially sighted SmartLife Coach, utilizing practical psychological strategies alongside assistive technology solutions; Meaghan Hargrave, who examines the profound impact of mainstream technologies such as the iPhone on daily independence for individuals with sight loss; and Julian Hobson, whose insights are shaped by colour vision deficiency, integrating medical physics, metaphysics, and artistic perspectives to explore accessibility and creative innovation.Concluding the book is an afterword by publisher Lorene Shyba, who examines the implications of artificial intelligence in enhancing digital accessibility through innovations in alt-text generation, inclusive website design, and user navigation. These compelling personal narratives and analytical discussions illuminate technology's transformative potential for promoting independence, creativity, and professional advancement while critically examining both its capabilities and limitations. Blind Visionaries and Technology offers readers practical insights into implementing and advancing assistive technologies and AI, highlighting their potential to foster greater inclusivity and societal engagement.

This book is devoted to boundary value problems of the Laplace equation on bounded and unbounded Lipschitz domains. It studies the Dirichlet problem, the Neumann problem, the Robin problem, the derivative oblique problem, the transmission problem, the skip problem and mixed problems. It also examines different solutions - classical, in Sobolev spaces, in Besov spaces, in homogeneous Sobolev spaces and in the sense of non-tangential limit. It also explains relations between different solutions. The book has been written in a way that makes it as readable as possible for a wide mathematical audience, and includes all the fundamental definitions and propositions from other fields of mathematics. This book is of interest to research students, as well as experts in partial differential equations and numerical analysis.

This book comprehensively and critically discusses chronicity as a crucial challenge for the future of medicine in an era of aging populations and the steady growth of non-communicable comorbidities. It describes how health systems that are still designed and based on the treatment of acute diseases are suffering from crowded emergency rooms and growing conflicts between patients, while medical staff increasingly face frustration and the risk of burn-out. The author not only shares her own clinical and personal experience in the care of end stage COPD or ALS patients with respiratory insufficiency, but also explores how primary care, incremental medicine and initiative medicine can improve the care provided for these patients. In turn, the book examines how developing countries are facing the chronicity issue in their daily struggles with communicable diseases like diarrhea and infections, and with non-communicable ones like obesity, diabetes and asthma. It also discusses the cost-related challenges that could accompany a possible paradigm shift from chronic to curable status, as was the case with hepatitis C. Due to the inevitable link between chronicity and end of life, the author tactfully addresses palliative care, focusing on the importance of shared decision-making as well as a full awareness of the future scenarios. Uniquely reflecting life-long clinical experience and stimulating discussion on a highly topical issue, this book appeals to a wide readership, from health professionals through caregivers to patients with chronic conditions.
