The Gospel According to David Foster Wallace

The Gospel According to David Foster Wallace

Adam S. Miller

Bloomsbury Academic

sidottu
The Gospel According to David Foster Wallace is the first book to explore key religious themes - from boredom to addiction, and distraction – in the work of one of America’s most celebrated contemporary novelists. In a series of short, topic-focused chapters, the book joins a selection of key scenes from Wallace’s novels Infinite Jest and The Pale King with clear explanations of how they contribute to his overall account of what it means to be a human being in the 21st century. Adam Miller explores how Wallace’s work masterfully investigates the nature of first-world boredom and shows, in the process, how easy it is to get addicted to distraction (chemical, electronic, or otherwise). Implicitly critiquing, excising, and repurposing elements of AA’s Twelve Step program, Wallace suggests that the practice of prayer (regardless of belief in God), the patient application of attention to things that seem ordinary and boring, and the internalization of clichés may be the antidote to much of what ails us in the 21st century.
The Conestoga Compact A Composite Biography of Adam Thorne
In the latter half of the twenty-first century, a high-school student from Las Cruces New Mexico named Frances Thorne lands a summer job as a custodian at Spaceport USA near Truth or Consequences New Mexico. He is found to be a very bright young man and is given a progression of increasingly difficult jobs. Eventually he is recommended for a scholarship to MIT to study aeronautical engineering by one of his supervisors, Nathaniel Floatingfeather, from the Mescalero Apache nation. As a doctoral project, Frances designs a theoretical spacecraft that can both take off and land on a conventional runway while taking large amounts of cargo into orbit.Using these spacecrafts, he founds the Uplift Aeronautics Company, which becomes enormously profitable and makes him a multi-billionaire. His son Adam is raised at the company complex alongside his father. When a fluke raises Aamto the company chairmanshi, he seeks to expand the company's interests to include research and development. How far this research may take him is an open question, but he is determined to take his dreams to the absolute limit. And his ideas about limits are much more expansive than anyone could ever expect.

Coats of Skins: A Treatise on the Salvation of Adam and Eve

Adam plunged mankind into sin by violating God's Law. The consequences of his disobedience still affect each and every person today, for the penalty for sin is death. Fortunately God is merciful and extended grace to Adam and Eve. To cover their unrighteousness "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them." (Gen 3:21). This treatise examines each of the 17 steps required to make these Coats of Righteousness for Adam and Eve. It was through the coat making process that Adam and Eve were made "wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." (2 Tim 3:15). Are you prepared to meet God? You can be if you allow Jesus Christ to make you a custom tailored Robe of Righteousness that will cover your sin perfectly and completely.

David Renggli: Work, Life, Balance

The present monograph Work, Life, Balance focuses on artistic works by David Renggli from 2006 until today, with no claim to the completeness of a list of works, but most certainly with respect for the striking heterogeneity inherent to the oeuvre of the Swiss artist and musician. It offers a broad overview of the oeuvre and provides informative impressions of the slyly dandy-like self-stagings of the artist. Should his works be understood merely as odes to hedonism? Not at all David Renggli revives highly diverse cliches of adamant desire and idyllic imaginings, only to confront them in a subtle, sensitive manner with their own deconstructions. With a vigorous wink of the eyes, he adopts an ironical perspective with regard to ideals of beauty and the cult of physical allure, not hesitating to critique the urge to self-optimisation and the egocentricity of self-infatuation. As a Neo-Dadaist, David Renggli remains unswervingly devoted to the free play of art and also of music: "My favourite instrument? Snare drum."

This new play charts the strange and intense relationship between All Souls Fellow, and historian, A.L. Rowse and German aristocrat Adam von Trott zu Solz. They met as young men in Oxford in 1929 and remained close until Trott was executed by the Nazis in 1944 for his part in the failed July 20th plot to assassinate Hitler. The play includes Al Bowlly and some of his recordings - so evocative of the 1930s. Rowse never got over Trott's death and his influence on him continued until Rowse's own death aged 93 in 1997. In spite of his brilliance, Rowse never felt that he really fitted in. He often made outrageous statements to shock his fellow academics - his cynicism for the world grew until he was quite bitter about waste, human proliferation but most importantly his own income tax bill "This filthy twentieth century - I hate its guts "
Clinical Medicine: A Clerking Companion

Clinical Medicine: A Clerking Companion

Students starting on the wards are often bewildered at their role and unable to make the most of the learning opportunities presented to them. Clinical Medicine: A Clerking Companion is written for inexperienced clinical students, and helps them to use their patients to learn medicine. At heart, it is a workbook that students can use whilst on the wards, that provides students with a framework for approaching patients with a range of common conditions. It is a 'friend over the shoulder' - guiding students through history taking and medical examination, and then evaluating the patient's current condition and their future management. It is also a self-directed learning portfolio, helping students to assess their progress by seeing where they are lacking clinical exposure. The book's introduction explains how to use it to make the most of time spent on the wards - how to interview and examine patients, how to use the book in recording findings findings, and then how to present patients to doctors. It emphasises the importance of anonymising patient information and ensuring patient consent before interviewing and examining them. The book goes on to cover around 50 common medical and surgical problems. Each chapter (for instance 'cardiology') begins with an introductory section offering basic approaches to the symptoms, signs, skills and investigations encountered in that specialty. The subsequent clerking proformas provide a guided framework for students to follow when working with their patients. A set of questions then helps students explore the topic in more detail - sending them back to their textbooks to read about what they have seen and understand the science underlying it. Online Resource Centre The Online Resource Centre to accompany Clinical Medicine: A Clerking Companion features dynamic, annotated figures and PDFs of the proformas in the book, available to download.
Urban Recycling and the Search for Sustainable Community Development

Urban Recycling and the Search for Sustainable Community Development

More Americans recycle than vote. And most do so to improve their communities and the environment. But do recycling programs advance social, economic, and environmental goals? To answer this, three sociologists with expertise in urban and environmental planning have conducted the first major study of urban recycling. They compare four types of programs in the Chicago metropolitan area: a community-based drop-off center, a municipal curbside program, a recycling industrial park, and a linkage program. Their conclusion, admirably elaborated, is that recycling can realize sustainable community development, but that current programs achieve few benefits for the communities in which they are located. The authors discover that the history of recycling mirrors many other urban reforms. What began in the 1960s as a sustainable community enterprise has become a commodity-based, profit-driven industry. Large private firms, using public dollars, have chased out smaller nonprofit and family-owned efforts. Perhaps most troubling is that this process was not born of economic necessity. Rather, as the authors show, socially oriented programs are actually more viable than profit-focused systems. This finding raises unsettling questions about the prospects for any sort of sustainable local development in the globalizing economy. Based on a decade of research, this is the first book to fully explore the range of impacts that recycling generates in our communities. It presents recycling as a tantalizing case study of the promises and pitfalls of community development. It also serves as a rich account of how the state and private interests linked to the global economy alter the terrain of local neighborhoods.

It is estimated that 90% of those who are HIV positive are in employment. However, the significant body of literature into HIV/AIDS to date has primarily focused on the medical aspects of the disease and its implications for health/social policy. There has been little analysis of the employment implications of HIV/AIDS, and what does exist is essentially descriptive and usually limited to legal features of the employment relationship. This text provides a review of the theoretical and practical issues which bear upon organisational responses to HIV/AIDS. The authors set these responses in a historical and international context, before analysing recent research findings. In the first three chapters, issues are explored through an analysis which highlights international convergences and divergences. The remaining chapters draw on the authors' research to explore the "internal" dynamics of HIV/AIDS in the workplace.

We are at a momentous inflection point in our evolutionary history: generative AI is becoming mainstream, transforming the world of work, and specifically that of knowledge workers. This book helps you to navigate your upskilling journey to remain relevant and to add value in the workplace.Knowledge workers must face up to the fact that there is a need to urgently reboot their skill set to survive and thrive in the new AI era. Many of the historic competences and points of differentiation that employees could offer are being challenged with AI technology. This book is all about building the power skills that knowledge workers will need to develop to maintain a competitive edge and work effectively alongside AI. It’s a future where AI will now do a lot of the heavy lifting and one in which employers will increasingly be looking for people to add value in areas where AI is weak. In particular, this puts the spotlight on the need for workers to dial up their potential as polymaths. These are people who can see the big picture from different perspectives and who can add that extra layer of innovative thinking and creativity to everything they do. Importantly, the book provides a framework for understanding how AI is likely to reshape the fundamental structure of the workforce, and how knowledge workers can strategically position themselves to enhance their value. This book provides an essential guide to developing new skill sets for knowledge workers in the AI era. Not only does it ensure that you don’t fall behind, it will also enable you to succeed and thrive.

Dr Livingstone's Cambridge Lectures

Dr Livingstone's Cambridge Lectures

Cambridge University Press

pokkari
Two lectures given by the medical missionary and explorer David Livingstone after his return to England from his travels in Africa (1841–1856) form the core of this book, which was originally published in 1858, the year when Livingstone set off on the British Zambezi expedition. The book also contains a biography, a letter from Adam Sedgwick (then Professor of Geology at Cambridge), and a thorough appendix covering the scientific results of the journey, describing the geography, mineralogy, diseases, and the language and cultural aspects of the peoples Livingstone encountered. Finally, Livingstone reports on the needs and prospects for further missionary work in Africa. Although Livingstone himself felt his calling was now to pursue purely scientific exploration, he hoped that the lectures and their subsequent publication would encourage other missionaries to continue his work of evangelisation.

Practical Toxicology: Evaluation, Prediction, and Risk, Third Edition shows how to conduct a program of safety evaluation and testing and then to interpret and apply the resulting data and information in the real world, beginning with the basic concepts in toxicology and progressing to the interpretation of the resulting data. Revised and updated chapters on risk assessment guide the reader to setting the foundations necessary for submission to regulatory authorities. In addition, a new chapter in the book reviews the errors in toxicology, mistakes, misuse, mismanagement, and misunderstanding with a view to avoiding these in the future.New Chapters in the Third Edition: Toxicology in silico Errors in Toxicology Safety Assessment of Extractables and Leachables. This new edition follows a practical sequence from introducing the basics of toxicology (including the vital concept of normality in controls) to describing a test program and then interpreting the data and translating that to risk assessment that can be used in a number of real world situations where safety and secure risk assessment are essential. Although written primarily from the perspective of pharmaceutical development, the test designs and toxicological problems encountered in that field are entirely relevant to those with other classes of chemicals, the only difference being the regulatory context. Toxicology is an international discipline and the book has been written to take into account some of the differences in regulatory nuance between the main regions of the world.Completely revised and written in an easily accessible style, the text address several audiences—from students and post-graduates coming to the subject for the first time to established professionals who find themselves needing to learn about toxicology, toxicity testing, interpretation of the results, and risk assessment. It is intended primarily as a textbook, with case studies and information on where to go to ask questions, but can also be used as a practical reference book. It covers all the basics of toxicology and the main aspects of safety evaluation testing and risk assessment while reviewing critically the current state of the discipline. It also provides a foundation for those seeking registration or certification.
