Why Woo-Woo Works: The Surprising Science Behind Meditation, Reiki, Crystals, and Other Alternative Practices
Why should we meditate? How can crystals heal the mind and body? Why is visualization so powerful - and so effective? Alternative therapies, healing modalities, and spiritual practices are often referred to as 'woo-woo, ' - but many of these approaches are actually supported by compelling scientific evidence. In this dynamic and thought-provoking book, David R. Hamilton PhD dives deeper into the true nature of consciousness and presents the cutting-edge research behind energy healing, crystals, meditation, and more. You'll discover: - The science behind some of today's most popular alternative practices- How your thoughts, emotions, and beliefs have healing power- The benefits of nature and a holistic approach to healing- A fascinating link between consciousness and human connection- The relationship between suppressed emotions and disease The ideas behind some of these holistic therapies have been around for millennia - but now we have scientific evidence demonstrating how they can contribute to physical, emotional, and energetic healing too. It's time to embrace the truth: That woo-woo really does work.
Crystal Structure Analysis

Crystal Structure Analysis

Alexander J Blake; Jacqueline M Cole; John S O Evans; Peter Main; Simon Parsons; David J Watkin

Oxford University Press
2009
sidottu
This text focuses on the practical aspects of crystal structure analysis, and provides the necessary conceptual framework for understanding and applying the technique. By choosing an approach that does not put too much emphasis on the mathematics involved, the book gives practical advice on topics such as growing crystals, solving and refining structures, and understanding and using the results. The technique described is a core experimental method in modern structural chemistry, and plays an ever more important role in the careers of graduate students, postdoctoral and academic staff in chemistry, and final-year undergraduates. Much of the material of the first edition has been significantly updated and expanded, and some new topics have been added. The approach to several of the topics has changed, reflecting the book's new authorship, and recent developments in the subject.

Diffuse Neutron Scattering from Crystalline Materials

Diffuse Neutron Scattering from Crystalline Materials

Victoria M. Nield; David A. Keen

Oxford University Press
2000

The present book is an accessible, comprehensive guide to diffuse neutron scattering, an important technique for studying structural disorder in materials. The text takes the reader through theoretical, computational and experimental developments in the subject and describes in detail its application to a number of structural disorder problems. These include the more traditional subjects of substitutional disorder in alloys and orientational disorder in molecular systems as well as the more recent studies of superionic and framework materials. Particular emphasis is placed on recent refinement methods for data interpretation which are compared with established computer simulation techniques and analytical approaches. The book collects disparate themes into one unique volume, written as an introduction to the method for graduate scientists. It will be a valuable reference text for any crystallographer keen to understand and apply modern interpretative techniques to diffuse scattering data.
Handbook of Nonlinear Optical Crystals

Handbook of Nonlinear Optical Crystals

Since the invention of the first laser 30 years ago, the frequency conversion of laser radiation in nonlinear optical crystals has become an important technique widely used in quantum electronics and laser physics for solving various scientific and engineering problems. The fundamental physics of three-wave light interactions in nonlinear optical crystals is now well understood. This has enabled the production of various harmonic generators, sum-and difference frequency generators, and optical parametric oscillators based on nonlinear optical crystals that are now commercially available. At the same time, scientists continue an active search for novel, highly efficient nonlinear optical materials. Therefore, in our opinion, there is a great need for a handbook of nonlinear optical crystals, intended for specialists and practitioners with an engineering background. This book contains a complete description of the properties and applications of all nonliner optical crystals of practicalimportance reported in the literature up to the beginning of 1990. In addition, it contains the most important equations for calculating the main parameters (such as phase-matching direction, effective nonlinearity, and conversion efficiency) of nonlinear frequency converters.

He arrived at Hope by the Sea a broken man with only hopelessness in view. Mr. Foss uses actual Work Product Letters to describe his raw emotions. They reveal his feelings when recovering his suppressed memories of verbal and physical abuse suffered from his teacher in second and third grade. Readers receive an in-depth look at a dual diagnosis recovery center as it treats underlying mental health and addiction issues of clients. They will hear, see and feel an addict's experiences in treatment. David writes insightful vignettes with passion and humor, as he incorporates interactive narratives of encounters with clients and staff. Marx and Freud

Marx and Freud

The Arden Shakespeare

This volume looks at Marx and Freud, who, though not 'Shakespeareans' in the usual academic or theatrical sense, were both deeply informed by Shakespeare's writings, and have both had enormous influence on the understanding and reception of Shakespeare. The first section of this volume consists of a discussion of Marx’s use of Shakespeare by Crystal Bartolovich followed by an essay on Shakespeareans’ recent uses of Marx by Jean E. Howard. The volume's second half, written by David Hillman, juxtaposes a discussion of Freud’s use of Shakespeare with a meditation on Shakespeare’s 'use' of Freud. Each part can be read fruitfully independently of the others, but the sum is greater than the parts, offering an engagement with two of the most influential thinkers in Western modernity and their interchanges with, arguably, the most influential figure of early modernity: Shakespeare.

Based on the critically acclaimed Lazarus series by Greg Rucka and Michael Lark and presented by Image Comics, the book brings this noir dystopia to tabletop roleplaying games. In the near future, time has rendered death obsolete, and life infinitely cheap. In the wake of governments' failure and global upheaval, the Families stepped in and divvied up the world. Now peace and order reign in a world of technological marvels and neo-feudalism. The Families quietly war with one another, wagering the lives of loyal Serfs while they relax in lives of indulgence, all while the Waste-those left behind by this new order-struggle daily for base survival. Play members of a Family in the highest of high-stakes game, Serfs fighting for their Family's interests to maintain order and safety, or disaffected Waste fighting for a better life in the burned ruins of the old world. The World of Lazarus requires the Modern AGE Basic Rulebook for use.

This is the story of the 1st Air Landing Light Regiment RA and its role in the Italian campaign and at the Battle of Arnhem. It is also the story of one of its soldiers: 14283058 Gunner Eric Wright Chrystal, father of the authors. Eric joined the army in September 1942 and, after training, joined the newly formed glider-borne regiment the following year. He first saw action in Italy in 1943, where he was seriously wounded. On 17 September 1944, two years to the day since he enlisted, he and the regiment were landed by glider near to Arnhem in the Netherlands. The authors recount set their father's experiences in context by describing the formation of the unit and the many months of training in England. Their involvement in the Italian campaign, where Eric served with E Troop, 3 Battery, is then recounted, detailing their actions at Rionero, Foggia and Campobasso, where Eric was wounded. It then moves on to describe 1st Air Landing Light Regiment's preparation for and involvement in Operation Market (the Airborne half of Market Garden). This very detailed account of the fighting highlights the regiment's pivotal (but often neglected) role near Arnhem bridge. Here, after nine days of intense combat, Eric was among the many captured and held until the end of the war. The inclusion of Eric's own eyewitness testimony lends a very personal touch to this excellent account of the regiment's experience of combat and life in the PoW camps.
