The Crocodiles of Chibembe: A Natural History

The Crocodiles of Chibembe: A Natural History

Two middle-aged Americans, Daniel Schuman and his wife Laura, are among a truckload of international travelers on an overland safari through backcountry Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi in 1993. Camping in the bush in lion territory, digging out of muddy streambeds, making friends in remote villages, scouting game on the open veld, stalking an elephant in a mopani thicket on foot, confronting near-tragedy while crossing a crocodile-infested river in a rickety boat... they receive an immersive education in animal and human behaviors in keeping with the driver's tongue-in-cheek warning: Mamba Safaris is an acronym for "Many Anxious Moments in Bleedin' Africa." If I were ever to try to turn this trip into a novel, Daniel later reflected, I'd have to make up some more detailed back-stories to flesh out my fellow travelers.... What I could also do, I mused, was have them killed off one by one. Alistair dragged from his tent in the night by the prowling lion at Nsefu... Greta "taken" by a crocodile at the river ford... Reg jumped by a leopard on the fringe of bush camp... Nigel overrun and trampled by the bull elephant... Gerhard, haplessly without a knife, swallowed by a python... Melody bitten in the butt by a black mamba during a loo stop.... I could eliminate them in inverse order to the degree to which we'd connected, and spare them according to their youth and physical attractiveness.... I'd have suspense, mounting tension, incident. Who among us would be next to fall victim to Africa's perils? Who among us would be left, who'd be at the wheel, by the time we pulled into the Kamuzu International Airport parking lot?

The world has changed. The mercantile kingdom of Charis has prevailed over the alliance designed to exterminate it. Armed with better sailing vessels, better guns, and better devices of all sorts - Charis faced the combined navies of the rest of the world at Darcos Sound and Armageddon Reef - and broke them. Despite the implacable hostility of the Church of God Awaiting, Charis still stands, an island of innovation in a world where the Church has worked for centuries to keep humanity locked at a medieval level of existence. But the powerful men who run the Church aren't going to take their defeat lying down. Charis may control the world's seas, but it barely has an army worthy of the name. As King Cayleb knows, far too much of the kingdom's recent good fortune is due to the secret manipulations of the being that calls himself Merlin - a being who is more than human and on whose shoulders rests the last chance for humanity's freedom. Now, as Charis and its archbishop make the rift with the Church explicit, the storm gathers. Schism has come to the world of Safehold, and nothing will be the same.
Max Weber and the Theory of Modern Politics
Max Weber's writings on the politics of Wilhelmine in Germany and the Russian revolutions of 1905 and 1917 are much less well known than his contributions to historical and theoretical sociology, yet they are essential to any overall assessment of his thought. Drawing on these writings, still mostly untranslated, David Beetham offers the most comprehensive account available in English of Weber's political theory. The book explores Weber's central concern with the prospects for liberal Parliamentarism in authoritarian societies and in an age of mass politics and bureaucratic organization, and shows how this concern led him to a revision of democratic theory which is still influential. It argues that Weber's analyzis of the class basis of contemporary politics necessitate a modification in some of the accepted interpretations of his sociology of modern capitalism. A special feature of the book is its full treatment of the extensive German literature on Weber's political thought. This second edition contains a substantial new critical introduction and an expanded bibliography. Otherwise the text of the widely acclaimed first edition remains unaltered. This is a book which adds an essential dimension to the understanding of Max Weber for students of sociology and politics who have previously only approached his work through his sociological writings.
Karl Mannheim and the Legacy of Max Weber

Karl Mannheim and the Legacy of Max Weber

This book focuses on the important work of Karl Mannheim by demonstrating how his theoretical conception of a reflexive sociology took shape as a collaborative empirical research programme. The authors show how contemporary work along these lines can benefit from the insights of Mannheim and his students into both morphology and genealogy. It returns Mannheim's sociology of knowledge inquiries into the broader context of a wider project in historical and cultural sociology, whose promising development was disrupted and then partially obscured by the expulsion of Mannheim's intellectual generation. This inspired volume will appeal to sociologists concerned with the contemporary relevance of his work, and who are prepared for a fresh look at Weimar sociology and the legacy of Max Weber.

Wissenschaft ALS Beruf - Der Begriff Des Dilettantismus Bei Max Weber

Other essays reconsider specific moments in the region's past, such as his provocative reassessment of the Alamo and the Texas Revolution.
