An entertaining and enthralling collection of myths, tales and traditions surrounding our trees, woodlands and forests from around the world. From the dark, gnarled woodlands of the north, to the humid jungles of the southern lands, trees have captured humanity’s imagination for millennia. Filled with primal gods and goddesses, dryads and the fairy tales of old, the forests still beckon to us, offering sanctuary, mystery and more than a little mischievous trickery. From insatiable cannibalistic children hewn from logs, to lumberjack lore, and the spine-chilling legend of Bloody Mary, there is much to be found between the branches. Come into the trees; witches, seductive spirits and big, bad wolves await you. With this book, Folklore Thursday aim to encourage a sense of belonging across all cultures by showing how much we all have in common.

An entertaining and engrossing collection of British customs, superstitions and legends from past and present. Did you know, in Cumbria it was believed a person lying on a pillow stuffed with pigeon’s feathers could not die? Or that green is an unlucky colour for wedding dresses? In Scotland it was thought you could ward off fairies by hanging your trousers from the foot of the bed, and in Gloucestershire you could cure warts by cutting notches in the bark of an ash tree. You’ve heard about King Arthur and St George, but how about the Green Man, a vegetative deity who is seen to symbolise death and rebirth? Or Black Shuck, the giant ghostly dog who was reputed to roam East Anglia? In this beautifully illustrated book, Dee Dee Chainey tells tales of mountains and rivers, pixies and fairy folk, and witches and alchemy. She explores how British culture has been shaped by the tales passed between generations, and by the land that we live on. As well as looking at the history of this subject, this book lists the places you can go to see folklore alive and well today. The Whittlesea Straw Bear Festival in Cambridgeshire or the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance in Staffordshire for example, or wassailing cider orchards in Somerset.
Coming to Harm Reduction Kicking and Screaming

Coming to Harm Reduction Kicking and Screaming

Dee Dee Stout; Joe Clifford

Harm Reduction for addiction is having a moment-and it's about time Most of the books on the subject-and there are a few new ones-mainly discuss statistics and other traditional bits of evidence, including from other countries, to prove that harm reduction in addiction treatment works. Many in the US, however, aren't swayed, complaining that these proofs are coming from other countries and, after all, we're different. Coming to HR K&S 2nd edition does something no other book on harm reduction does: it provides proof of how HR works by allowing drug users and their families from across the US-who have used HR strategies successfully-share their stories directly. Instead of using tough love (which isn't love at all of course) these folks have been influenced to change their relationship to substances, or those they love who use substances chaotically, through more love, more connection, and sometimes simply having the guts to face their worst nightmare: the loss of a loved one.Additionally, Stout & Clifford discuss what HR is and isn't, as well as the real roots of HR here in the US. Finally, a brand-new section dedicated to families and couples, again with historical notes but supplied by real-life people whose lives have been changed by HR. Does this mean everyone's life is perfect now? Absolutely not. Just like life, these are stories of how people change, grow, misstep, and continue to move forward even when the outcome is the worst. If storytelling is the way to change culture, these stories of guts and sheer tenacity be applauded ... and hopefully deeply listened to.

Social Movements and Their Technologies

Social Movements and Their Technologies

Stefania Milan; Dee Dee halleck

Palgrave Macmillan
2013
sidottu
Now in paperback for the first time, Social Movements and their Technologies explores the interplay between social movements and their 'liberated technologies'. It analyzes the rise of low-power radio stations and radical internet projects ('emancipatory communication practices') as a political subject, focusing on the sociological and cultural processes at play. It provides an overview of the relationship between social movements and technology, and investigates what is behind the communication infrastructure that made possible the main protest events of the past fifteen years. In doing so, Stefania Milan illustrates how contemporary social movements organize in order to create autonomous alternatives to communication systems and networks, and how they contribute to change the way people communicate in daily life, as well as try to change communication policy from the grassroots. She situates these efforts in a historical context in order to show the origins of contemporary communication activism, and its linkages to media reform campaigns and policy advocacy.
