Originally published in 1953 From Roman Empire to Renaissance Europe looks at the broader picture of the Middle Ages, drawn in terms of the men and women and the situations that they had to face. The constant theme of change is revealed not by detailed narrative of elements but by commentary and examples that show how ideas and systems developed, and how theses affected the patterns of everyday life. The book looks at how the Roman Empire of the West gave way to a decentralized society, vigorous, brutal and inventive for which the only unifying factor was a universal acceptance of Latin Christianity. In turn Christendom began to lose its coherence during the 13th and 14th centuries and by the fifteenth century Europe had emerged as a rival term, a Europe in which the landed magnates had capitulated to the omnipotent and ubiquitous prince, commerce, as well as land now being a source of wealth. This is not a static picture of the ‘Middle Ages’ with fixed characteristics, but of real men and women facing genuine situations.

F. R. Leavis died in 1978 and his wife Q. D. Leavis in 1981, and with their deaths ended one of the most productive and influential literary partnerships in the language. This volume is a collection of reminiscences by people who knew Queenie Leavis as fellow students at Girton, were early pupils of Frank Raymon Leavis, collaborated in the editing of Scrutiny, or were colleagues or friends later. The collection, which is illustrated, is full of rich and fresh biographical information. Since it covers such a wide span, it brings out the contrast between the young couple at the beginning of their careers, good-looking, hopeful and confident; and the embattled veterans in seemingly endless conflict even with their friends and supporters. It also suggests the mercurial nature of both, since they could seem so widely different to different people, and to the very end both could exert formidable charm. Denys Thompson, who edited this volume, was an early pupil of Leavis's, and collaborated with him on Culture and Environment in the 1930s.

Older than prose, it was the vehicle for his technology, history, philosophy and science; it helped him feel at home in his environment; it was the social element between him and his fellows. Mr Thompson explores these many facets in the earlier chapters of his book, and then goes on to consider the impact of printing when in his view poetry became subtler but ceased to be a popular possession. However, as Mr Thompson shows, poetry could still be of value in helping people to cope with the strains of living, in assimilating the implications of vast new fields of knowledge, and in keeping alive the idea of humanity in a dehumanising age.

The century before the Reformation in Italy has generally been treated with either neglect or recrimination. Protestants tended to see the Church becoming ever more corrupt; Roman Catholics assumed that it was ‘paganised’ by the Renaissance. Indisputably it was becoming more Italian in its leadership. This book attempts a dispassionate survey of the popes and the clergy of the peninsula during the hundred years prior to Luther and the Sack of Rome. There is no book in Italian (or in any other language) which tries to describe what the Italian clergy and their parishioners were like at this time. The resulting picture will perhaps offend traditionalists; it will give no comfort to ‘modernists’. It aims to be about ‘life as it was lived’. There are many saints and sinners, and if there are more of the latter, there always are in history books, for that is how the historian invariably finds his material.

The proposition that the existence of God is demonstrable by rational argument is doubted by nearly all philosophical opinion today and is thought by most Christian theologians to be incompatible with Christian faith. This book argues that, on the contrary, there are reasons of faith why in principle the existence of God should be thought rationally demonstrable and that it is worthwhile revisiting the theology of Thomas Aquinas to see why this is so. The book further suggests that philosophical objections to proofs of God’s existence rely upon an attenuated and impoverished conception of reason which theologians of all monotheistic traditions might wish to reject. Denys Turner proposes that on a broader and deeper conception of it, human rationality is open to the ‘sacramental shape’ of creation as such and in its exercise of rational proof of God it in some way participates in that sacramentality of all things.

For the medieval mystical tradition, the Christian soul meets God in a ‘cloud of unknowing’, a divine darkness of ignorance. This meeting with God is beyond all knowing and beyond all experiencing. Mysticisms of the modern period, on the contrary, place ‘mystical experience’ at the centre, and contemporary readers are inclined to misunderstand the medieval tradition in ‘experientialist’ terms. Denys Turner argues that the distinctiveness and contemporary relevance of medieval mysticism lies precisely in its rejection of ‘mystical experience’, and locates the mystical firmly within the grasp of the ordinary and the everyday. The argument covers some central authorities in the period from Augustine to John of the Cross.
